Gaston's in October

Naw, the landing was ok (save for the geese, who didn't budge ), but the taxiing was interesting when I started to slog down in the parking area:eek::D.

Here's what your take-off looked like. :)

Marc Popejoy and Wayne Pierce are taking off and landing in the video.

Thanks to Wayne for shooting some of the footage...his video shots aren't shaky like mine. He shot a lot of other airplanes landing at Gaston's, but I had to cut that out because it made my video really, really long. Thanks also to Jason (from the red board) for letting me use some of his photos.

I loved how Joyce and Jason were waving in the video. :) And Wayne's commentary made me laugh. :D

As you can see, we ran into a little rain, right before I landed back at the farm.

Nice vids Diana! Did they do some logging on the east end of the runway at Gaston's? Your vid shows a clear view of the whole runway on final. I remember needing to come over trees or fly a left dog-leg gap to get lined up on final.

I don't think they cut any trees down on the approach, but I could be wrong. The difference may be how I got lined up when turning base to final.

Sure wish I could watch the videos, but it's blocked at work. And the dial up at home is just too slow...... :nonod:

Well, doggone it. Dial up is agonizing. We're still considering switching from satellite to a Verizon air card with a router, especially since we can get Verizon 3G at the farm now. Too bad we can't get 3G with our iPhones, though.

Did you move out to the hills permanently, or are you still in town part of the time?

If that approach doesn't look alot different from when I was there in June, my memory has really gone to pot. Scary!:yikes: My memory--- not the approach.

Rick

Hmmmmm...... So that's where that mud on my left wing/stab came from! :D

Looks like I picked the roughest track on the strip. Didn't climb as well as I wanted to either. Glad I was almost out of gas (as I had planned). I need to practice staying down in ground effect better too.

I hear Tom just about to say something about my flaps. That's a technique one of my instructors taught me.

You'll want to check out a couple of these wireless data cards. My BB is 3G - and when I got it, my plan was to do away with @ least one data card by tethering. Couldn't stand the speed - or lack of it with the 3G. Finally took a data card my BB and two laptops to Springfield (that's the best 3G signal around they said) logged both on and went to a speed check site. Checked the speed then switched the connections. My non 3G data card (alltel/now verizon) smoked the 3G on both laptops. If I remember correct the BB 3G was downloading @ 4-500 kbits the data card 1500+. T'was no comparison. Canceled the 3G tethering....

I think that was Wayne talking, but I'm not sure what he was talking about. Tom and I use that technique sometimes in airplanes with flaps on short strips and at the farm. :)

I thought it was neat that you can see Mary waving good-bye as you're rolling past us. :) We got a lot of people waving in the video. :)

Oh. I didn't know there were two kinds. I'm kinda confused now.

If I made it more complicated - would that help....:D

marc
:D It might help make me more confused.

According to the guys at Best Buy (we have found that some of those people know what they are talking about, and some don't :D), Verizon has the best signal at our farm. And if we buy the Verizon card, we'll be getting the fastest speed. That's all I know so far. :D

We need for someone with a Verizon phone to come visit us at the farm and we'll check their speed.

I just bought this for my laptop and it works pretty well. Can't say how well it would work at your farm, though, but if you are getting Verizon 3G it should be OK. It comes with a 30 day return option so you can try it out and see if it works for you.

In the description you'll see "provides high–speed access on our 1x/EV–DO network". That's how I'm connecting - not the 3G. YMMV

Marc, It could have been me, even though I use the same technique. Get up to normal rotation speed with no flaps (cut's drag) then pop in two clicks and climb like a homesick angel :D

I did remember thinking it took longer than I expected in your clean configuration, but you have less hp, and I don't know that I've ever seen the technique outside my airplane!

What a great weekend.

By the way, sometimes we were all talking about different stuff that had nothing to do with what was happening at the time. I had to do a LOT of audio editing of this video because of chatting while filming (sometimes it was pretty funny stuff), including some of MY noises and chatter. :D You'd think I'd learn to be more quiet. :D

Diana,
So what's the dates for this year?

Kaye, that's a good question! :D I hope you're planning on joining us this year!

It will probably be the weekend before Halloween. I'll check the calendars and the forecast for trees peaking and let you know.

Great! I'm thinking I should make that trip. :D

Trees peaking...

...and TOES PAINTING! :cornut:

Well, due to various things coming up (October's looking like a busy month) and the possibility of the Citabria being in the shop for fabric repair, we aren't going to plan to stay for the weekend. Might fly down for lunch sometime near the end of the month, but that's about it for us this year.

I wasn't going to make it either. Bummer. The trinnie's going in for a panel upgrade the day after I get back from WV62. Supposedly back by that weekend....yeah, right....I'm not counting on it and I have to learn to fly the new glass panel.

So how about this year, Diana?? :D I was just looking at the Gaston's website and there is a special chef's dinner coming up the first weekend in October.

The food looks spectacular... with people cooking it who know how to make things like bearnaise sauce. :D I have 2 friends who might be interested in this weekend already... it would be even more fun with more!

Well, I hadn't planned on organizing anything this fall, but I nominate you to do it! :D

A fall fly-in at Gaston's is always pleasant. I had previously picked a weekend later in October since the leaves are peaking about then. The rooms fill up really fast at Gaston's when the leaves are peaking, so it would be good for people to decide early. :)

I'll be in Atlanta the last weekend of October to be with the grandkids for Halloween.

Well, alternatively, if all the rooms do fill up, we can always just fly-in for Sunday brunch and spend the day. Or some people could spend the weekend and others fly-in for the day! The only weekends I can do this are the first weekend in October and the last weekend, which would be right before Halloween... but it would be GREAT to spend another weekend at Gaston's minus the heat and before next June.

Sounds like a plan! Oh, did I mention that I nominate Lynn to be in charge? :D

I'll put Gaston's down for the first weekend in October on my calendar and we'll try to make it down there. :)

:(

If it's done by then we hope to see you and Sue there. Tom said he'd like to fly with you in the Citabria again. :)

I'm bringing my parachutes for Lynn. :)

I got to fly the Champ here locally for four landings. 3MY I'd suggest landing in the grass north of the access road, there is still 1700 or so.....

I'm always honored to fly the Citabria :) I just can't seem to get Tom interested in the Seneca..... :(

I'm looking forward to my first barrel roll! (I think.)

And THIS never gets old... :D
