Gaston's in October

Well, shoot; it's not working out for me (actually us as three folks were coming with me). I picked up a cold I thought would be gone by now but quite the opposite. 'Fraid I shouldn't be flying tomorrow. I'll be thinking of y'all as I sit with my hot water bottle and thermometer on the couch watching Saturday daytime TV.

Best,

Dave

I had a problem and didn't get to leave after lunch today, but going tomorrow am, returning Sunday after lunch. Anybody who was riding with you is welcome to go along and help drive.

Poor thing. Well, take care. Homemade chicken noodle soup would be good. We'll miss you.

Did ya get that thing fixed? ;)

We will be a flight of two Citabrias departing Twin Oaks approximately 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. Should be there by 10:30. See ya down there! :)

Did you have to bring that up on a public forum? I told him I just needed it to work over the weekend, since I would be out of town and it might see some unexpected action. He said not to worry, they take care of those problems all the time, and gave me a thing that will provide some protection. He said it was a pretty big one, and he would be surprised if it didn't get quite a bit of usage.

Long story short, he said he would have to build another crown and repair the glue job around the root canal, but some of that will have to wait a few days. He also said that since it's a molar that I should be careful if we have a big steak on the river.

Oh, my. :D

At least it won't stop you from coming. :D They have pretty good soup if worse comes to worse. :D

I'm looking forward to the strawberries dipped in the chocolate fountain.

Looks like we will have about 10 for Sunday Brunch.

See you all at 10:30 on Sunday AM at brunch.

PS I sure hope the strip dries out. PA34 is NOT an ideal grass airplane....sigh.

Hey, Dr. Bruce:

Strip was good today at noon, in my lil' ol' underpowered Cherokee 140...

Enjoy brunch tomorrow, and have a good flight down and back!

It's beautiful here. Runway is dry. Jim and Mary made it for lunch, and we had a great flight down with our Citabria friends.

Bruce, see you tomorrow. :)

The tooth chose not to participate in the "it will be all better tomorrow" exercise. Not only it is not all better, it is all un-better and getting moreso by the hour. Monday can't come quick enough.

Sorry you didn't get the message earlier today, the guy I talked to at the resort (when I cancelled) said he would tell you I had folded the tent. The Texas guys may be all hat-no cattle, eh?

Sorry to hear it's worse Wayne...hope they can take care of it tomorrow.

I guess they forgot to tell me...it was a very busy weekend at Gaston's. Evidently the fishing was good too.

I just don't know what to think about you guys from Texas. ;)

Here are some pictures...coming in batches.

We had a lovely flight down to Gaston's with our Citabria friends.

And then Jim and Mary showed up...what a nice surprise.

We walked all the nature trails yesterday...what a perfect day for being outside.

And then Jason got his aerobatic ride on his break in the afternoon. He is the young man who posted here after our fly-in last June.

Jason and I had a fun flight. Here are his before and after pictures. :D We had a great time.

This morning was beautiful too, and Bruce and Sue made it down, as well as some other friends of ours from back home.

Bruce and Tom went flying in the Citabria for a bit. Here are a few more pictures. :)

It was a great weekend. I'm sorry that a lot of people couldn't make it that had planned on coming.

Wow. It sounds like Bruce had some wind when he got back home as well. It was shifting and gusting to 30 when we got back to the farm. It was a crosswind...at times. :D Kept me busy for a bit.

Wind was picking up at Gaston's when we took off and it was rather swirly and turbulent with some shear when we climbed up out of the river valley. Kinda reminded me of the winds at our fly-in last June.

First Alberta Clipper of the year in Peoria. It was kinda bitter when we got out. 28 F expected tonight.

When we were 30nm S. at 8000 the PIA controller was talking to a Centurion 37Y (I know that guy, he's in hangar 13....) who was 40 W and inbound. I asked Tom (ATC) do I get to watch him or does he get to watch me?

Well, as it turns out, he got to watch me. At 1000 agl, not enough rudder for the slip, added a few turns on the left engine. Full flaps, down on the deck early at 90 knots, bleeding it off over the grass. Controls to the stop and back several times; got the left main down (runway 35, wind 290 @20G40), dumped the flaps, whew.

Bill & Mrs. Albers, in the Centurion was on short final as I turned back on the taxiway. Classic left wing down, right rudder, he went about halfway down the runway, put the coal to it and I heard him call appcon at Peoria for runway 31.

Good call. We went over there in the Ford and drove them back. Nobody at home to call for a ride (10 days in Colorado!).

It was a wonderful day, nice see Diana & Tom, and to meet some of Diana and Tom's friends, thanks to Diana for the loan of Tom and 16Y, Tom's got nerves of steel.

So what time did you leave, Diana?
Sort of glad we weren't there today, what with the winds being like you describe...:)
(Mary's still getting used to the potholes in the air (and so am I).)

I'm glad you had time to fly the Citabria before you had to leave. Tom said you flew it well. We'll have that play taken out of the stick before you fly it next time.

Tom's got nerves of steel.
:D He really does. And he has had a few students (including me) who have tested that in the past.

We took off about 2:30. Took longer than usual to get home. :D

It wouldn't have been the best time to try to make for a fun trip for a passenger who might be nervous about bumps. My Citabria friend (Bruce Dallman) who flew his wife to Gaston's for the first time on Saturday would have been glad he missed the winds and bumps too. I think we've convinced her to join us at our fly-ins now. She loved the place.

Here's a few more pictures, including one with Bruce and Sue. Deborah Dallman took the one of Tom and me with our Citabria.

Some of our friends are planning to be at Gaston's again in late October. Terry and Denise will be there the weekend of October 24th. They were there last year. I don't know if Terry is flying his CJ-6 or Bonanza down there, or driving. We will likely book a cabin for Saturday night again.

Anyone want to join us? Even for just the day/lunch on Saturday? :)

Bruce, Kim, Phil, Spike, Dave, Jay and I (among others) only want to go if we can have dinner at the restaurant.

So, is that the date? The weekend of the 24th? Lindsay is coming down one weekend to get her wedding dress fitted. I'll have to work around that and we're still pinning that down <g>. Have to wait for the dress folks to let us know.

Restaurant wasn't bad if one had good company (which I did)! Also, after the second bourbon and ginger :cheerswine:

Best,

Dave

How did you find your waiter to order the second round?

What second round? Just ordered two to begin <g>

You're talkin to a guy that frequented officer's clubs in various regions of the world <g>

The more genteel members of the group only ordered one a time. Come to think of it, some of them didn't order any. I obviously sat at the wrong table.

Officer's club rules in remote areas like Vietnam called for several modifications in rules to maintain one's gentlemanly manners and not get unnerved by poor service.

Order enough drinks to be sure one wasn't dry before the server returned.

Order drinks that were very difficult to ruin: scotch on the rocks, etc.

The special forces officer also improvised taking careful note of what others were drinking. If there was a disruption for things like a rocket attack, one wanted to know where another drink could be quickly found. When others vacated, switch your empty glass for theirs. (That is, have a back up plan.)

Know when happy hour ended and be sure to order enough before it ended to get through the evening.

Be sure to recon the way back to one's hootch: make sure there were prominent markers such as a wall, fence or side of a building to lean upon and not take a wrong turn. Rest room or other relief facility enroute was good. Down hill slope back to quarters also helped.

Can't talk 'bout a lot more without violating rules of SF fraternal organizations. Perhaps Dan could add more.

Best,

Dave

Re: Gaston's in October 2009

Tom and I will be in Cabin #3, along with Wayne and Rebecca Pierce who are flying up from Memphis. Bruce Dallman and his wife might fly down from KPTS in their Citabria to join us for Sunday Brunch.

Joe Areeda might be passing through the area on that weekend, so don't know if he might join us or not...still waiting to hear back from him. :)

A couple more rounds of cocktails and we could have just forgotten to eat.

It's a great place in spite of that experience. I'll bet it's beautiful in the fall. I'd love to go down then. We have other commitments...:frown3:

It really is nice down there. I love the scenery and the grass strip and the other pilots that are typically there. I don't let issues with the food overshadow or ruin my positive experiences there. As I have said before, I didn't get any bad food, but I understand that some people did. Oh, well, I guess if people don't like it there, they don't have to go there. I supposed I *could* apologize for being a positive and optimistic person, but I ain't gonna. :D I'm going to enjoy being there no matter what the food is like. :D

We have other commitments...:frown3:
Sorry you won't be able to make it.

Seven words you should know if you want to enjoy your dinner there:

"Just the salad bar for me, thanks"

A couple more rounds of cocktails and we could have just forgotten to eat.

Hey, Diana--

What time Saturday do you plan on eating? Mary and I would like to fly down, if we may...

Jim, that would be great! It looks like some folks from Wichita may try to meet us for lunch, too. And I'm hoping that Joyce can make it over, as well.

I don't really know yet what time would work for everyone for lunch. Probably around 12:00 or 12:30? The runway might be wet, depending on how much rain they get in the next few days, so some people may need to ride over from one of the paved airports.
