Birthday fly-in/cook out at the farm

Anybody going from the Northern Illinois/Wisconsin area that has an empty seat? That wants to stop by Dubuque? That wants to drop me off in NE Missouri on the way back?

I have my thumb out and the 195 probably won't be available that weekend.
Sorry, but we're not going. :(

The fly-in is on Saturday, August 22nd, with some people spending the night on Saturday and hanging out on Sunday. Kim and Phil will be in the guest room in the farm house and Wayne and Rebecca Pierce will be staying in the hangar apartment Saturday night.

Greg, it's been a long time since you've been here. It would be good to have you back down on the farm. Bruce, if you don't make it this time, well, we'll have more fly-in's, perhaps when you aren't on call. :)

Joe Areeda had mentioned coming past this part of the country at the end of the month...I hope he'll be here, too.

I have reserved a block of rooms at the local Super 8 for anyone else who might want to spend the night. Camping here is also an option for those who like to do that. :)

Ya know, if the runways were lighted, we might be able to make it in Friday night! :)

LLU has lights. :) We'll come get you. You can stay here Friday...guest room is available Friday night. :) I'd stay up late for you guys.

Oh, don't think that I wasn't thinking about that when I typed it! But with the 210 being down on top of the timing issues, I don't think it's happening this year. Maybe for your 41st! :)

"Why are all those people flying in here this weekend?"

"She said it was for her birthday party."

"Did she say how old she will be?"

"She said she is approaching 40."

" . . . Did she say from which direction?"

That is so funny! Wayne, you crack me up!!

Saturday 22nd, six days hence. We'll be there, though prob. @ LLU. Just for the day....

That's great! We're glad you're coming. We'll shuttle you back and forth. :)

I'll post Brian's corn-landing video here after I clear it with him.

Here is a video that Brian made of his take off and landing the other day before he left.

And one he made the afternoon he first arrived:

OH, I forgot to mention timing. We'll hang out all afternoon and the main meal will be about 5:00. Marc Popejoy said he's bringing a lot of brats to grill. Yummmm.

Hot air balloon launch will be late Saturday afternoon sometime. If all goes well with that, we will need a few people to volunteer to help get the balloon up and be part of the chase crew.

Did I mention chairs? If you have room, it might be a good idea to bring chairs.

The weather for Saturday looks good. Might be a lot of rain before that so I'll post updates on the runway conditions.

If anyone wants to fish at our lake (on our mile section), we'll let them take the old truck and our fishing stuff and there is a fishing boat (plus a canoe) at the lake. We furnish bug spray. I wear boots down there because of the snakes.

If you have a handheld radio, it wouldn't hurt to bring a spare in case ours run down.

Is there a website anywhere that shows the date for record high temps in Lamar for the past 20 years?
Wayne, here's the forecast for this weekend....

Friday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 89.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 88.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 65.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 89.

Lookin' good.

So do we have a list of who will be there??

I'm going...:yesnod:

Maybe next year? :)

Yea, I've been thinking I need to follow your and Barbs example and do a long flying x-c vacation... but I'm not sure I would want to plan it for August with all the bumpies that are sure to happen.

Speaking of Barb?? Is she going to be there???
Haven't heard back from Barb. I think she's busy with cows and also with her daughter's wedding in Denver. She's been rather scarce lately.

We just got most of the mowing done today. All the rain we just had soaked right in and no puddles left this afternoon. Saturday's weather looks perfect.

Always some bull about Barb and a bull.
But, it's always true! :D

So, what are the chances that you'll make it up here? Are you going to Colorado? Or are you coming to the Land of the Corn?

well the soaring isn't looking very good. just have to find an airplane.

Colorado is iffy for two reasons.

1. The B-90 is still going back together, with an interesting side note. The shop had to remove the ailerons to install some new bushings or push-rod ends or something, maybe fix a few sheet metal cracks. When control surfaces come off, they have to be balance-checked before they go back on. These wouldn't balance, even when adding max allowable weight, and the guys noticed the static wicks were the big-honking metal kind with the little barbs and spikes at the back. So they pulled them off and installed the normal rubber coated cable model, and balance was fine. So then they looked in the manual to see what is approved for that plane, turns out the big fancy ones aren't on the list. Flaps also had the big ones, but no wicks are called for on the flaps. Makes you wonder how they got on there in the first place.

2. Mom may not be up to the trip yet. She was much better yesterday evening, hope that carries through for a while.

So now we're down to the weekend, as I have to be here for a tee-time early Monday morning. The family has tried to impute some entries on my schedule, but I have steadfastly declined to commit.

Bottom line for me, like always, is who the hell knows? I'd like to come.

Cool! Oh, I meant to say....I'm sorry that you can't go soaring. :) ;)

The sofa bed in the living room is still available. Brent just spent four (or was it five?) nights on it and said it wasn't uncomfortable.

If you DO make it, and if you feel so inclined, feel free to fly the Citabria when you get here and give rides if you want. Bruce has the same offer. :)

Oh, my. So many details on those fancy, complicated airplanes. I don't know how they keep all that straight.

I'm glad to hear that she's doing better. :)

:D Well, I guess we'll know when we are blinded by that shiney taildragger in the sky. I hope you can make it. I ordered cooler weather just for you since I know you don't like to sweat. :D

Here's the latest update on the fuel at LLU (or lack of).

Lamar is now out of 100LL (cropdusters have sucked it dry), but they still have auto fuel. I called the city of Lamar, and they called the fuel guy and they called me back and said the fuel guy couldn't come until Monday. I called the fuel guy myself and begged, pleaded, cajoled, nearly cried, and almost whined while explaining my predicament.

He *might* be able to bring it to Lamar today, or *might* be able to tell his boss the overtime is worth it to deliver fuel tomorrow. Or, he was likely wanting to get rid of me. :D

In the meantime, I have the FBO hours and prices in this area if anyone wants to know all that.

We're good with fuel for the Citabria since we have a 500 gallon tank here at the farm with ethanol-free auto fuel.

diana - im working on finding a plane as we speak. flying club planes are booked but im hopeful ryan will let me take the 150. thanks for the offer on the citabria and the bed! If I make it my plan will probably be to leave saturday evening, maybe after supper or whenever you want to kick me out. Still hoping for some soaring weather on Sunday.

I have to go to brother-in-law's birthday in Houston (no one tell him, OK?).

Rather hang out with the painted-toenail crowd, that's for sure! :cheerswine:

Spike, we'll take a picture of our toes, just for you. :D

Fuel update... the fuel guy just called and said he is on his way to Lamar with 950 gallons of 100LL. Yay!!!! :goofy:

Have a great time!

Sorry I couldn't make it - family obligations, celebrating my brother's birthday and my mother's birthday this weekend.

Missa, Just think if you flew out to Oregon and gave me a visit, you could fill in a lot of those empty states! :blueplane::D
