Birthday fly-in/cook out at the farm

Happy birthday Diana. I'm thrilled to hear the weekend was a huge success. :)
:) You guys will have to fly here sometime to visit. :)

Here are a few more pictures. The young lady in the back seat of the Citabria was one of the women who had their first aerobatic ride yesterday. She was also one of the women who said that they now wanted to take flying lessons. :)

Okay, here are some more shots I took while there!

The Hawker 4000 is ostensibly the first one sold to a corporation, according to the line guy at Joplin. It's piloted by the FBO owner there.

The shot of the 182 shows the rain that came through shortly after we landed at the farm, and which we skirted on the way in (shown previously). Diana took me up in the Citabria Saturday evening and we got some shots of the storms to the east and the sunset to the west.

That shovel is Big Brutus (http://www.worldslargestthings.com/kansas/bigbrutus.htm), an electric shovel that was used to strip mine coal in the area. When it ceased operation, it was about 10 miles from the farm. We happened across it on the way back from Cofeyville, where we saw the deer pacing us as we taxied down the runway. On takeoff, we saw a total of five. When we announced the presence of the deer as we landed, the FBO said that they hoped we had a rifle and would shoot them. Apparently they've been trapped inside the fence for a few months now.

You can see in the last picture why the locals don't go to Nowata (H66) much. It's not the best runway! In fact, when we mentioned at Cofeyville that we'd just come from Nowata, which is only 20 NM south, they said "you landed there in that (referring to the 182)? And you still have your landing gear?"

Nice pictures Grant! The photo of the storm clouds is really pretty.

BTW, you flew the Citabria really well. :)

Here are a few more pictures that Bill (the other Citabria pilot) sent me.

Now that the dust has settled, I’d like to thank several people.

Leslie, Grant, Jesse, Chip, Dean and Tim...thank you so much for going to the expense and taking the time to come to the farm to spend time with us…we really do appreciate it and we enjoyed having all of you here. Oh, and Malcolm too! Welcome to PoA, by the way. :)

Leslie, thank you so much for helping us get ready…Barb enjoyed spending time with you doing so, too. And thank you for getting that splinter out! You are much more gentle than Tom.

Grant and Jesse, thank you for my new set of chocks. Oh, wait, I have to give those back, don’t I. :D Dangit, they ARE kinda neat looking. I’m flying down to Rogers on Friday to get paint for the airplane, so I’ll drop them off on the way.

Grant and Tim, thank you for giving rides to people at the party.

Grant, thank you for giving me the audio version of the Oshkosh presentation. Tom and I are going to sit down and listen to the whole thing in a day or so. That Raptor was really loud, wasn’t it!

Brian, thank you so much for donating the bottles of wine for the party!!! We started in on them the night before the party. :cheerswine:

Tim thank you for the grilling tools…Tom was getting kinda worried the night before when we couldn’t find his grilling spatula.

Thanks to everyone for the food that you brought and for the cards and gifts…I forgot to tell people not to bring presents. Oops.

Salim, the college professor who teaches the violin said this was his first fly-in and he just loved it! He suggested having a fly-in here at the farm where he will give a concert. He gives violin concerts and even has a CD out. That would be an interesting combination wouldn’t it…a violin concert/fly-in.

This was the best birthday ever because of friends and family. Thanks all y'all! :blowingkisses:

Leslie and I were just so happy that we could be part of it! And I want to publicly thank Diana....

Just for being Diana! She's one of a kind!

You forgot to thank me for getting your R/C airplane stuck up in a tree 50 feet high, 1000 ft away from your farm.

:D :D :D

How funny. Well, I didn't know what category to put it in. :D Actually, it's not a problem. It will come down someday and we have another one and I think it already had some issues and had 100-mile-an-hour tape on it already. :D

Tom was impressed with how well you flew both airplanes! He was also impressed that you could find the one in the tree so far away. It was nice that you guys actually took a little drive around the farm. He hadn't been back there since they cleared away the trees from the ice storm. :)

Barb was pretty much impressed with you in general. :)

Here are some pictures that Tom took with his iPhone of you out flying:

Here are a couple more. Jesse's trying to bring the plane in so we could go to dinner. (Tom's ribs were wonderful!)

WOW!!!!! Leslie looks WONDERFUL!!!!! How is she feeling?

Looks as if everyone had a GREAT time. Did they inflate the balloon?

Heck, they were great the next day for lunch also!

By the way...was that the last time you saw that plane?

Did they inflate the balloon?
Well, they tried. The wind was still strong enough that one side of the balloon kept collapsing and the balloon blew back and forth (it was in the soybeans a time or two), so they finally put it away. I posted a few pictures in a previous thread of what it looked like looking up into the top. Don't have any pictures as seen from the hangar. It looked really nice flying over it though, but we were doing aerobatics, so we didn't have a camera with us.

ok in that case Leah and I might be able to make a run over. nothing planned that weekend, yet.

Probably Saturday, August 22. :) People can also come early and stay longer. :)

hmmmmm......i could still get back in time to leave on the b-day/anniversary getaway.......

tho i might be in trouble if i was wx delayed :nono:

Well, if Ted didn't make me pay ALL the gas, I might try to win the furthest flown for your birthday. ; )

Hum... I wonder about taking the archer. Can you send pictures of your strip so I can get permission from the club to take the plane there? I know it's better kept then some public use strips.

Missa

I'll plan on being there again Diana. Hopefully I won't crash your airplane into the trees again.

If they wont let you fly into Twin Oaks, KLLU is just up the road, I am sure someone would come pick you up.

Sounds good to me and I can even fly in this year!:goofy:
Cool!

I'll work on that. Some people will likely land at the local airport 5 miles away and we'll find a way to shuttle people back and forth. There is always a volunteer who will fly over or drive over to get people at LLU.

I was hoping that you could come back again. :)

The wind finally blew it down, and it was still airworthy...until I tried to fly it and crashed it BAD. We'll have another one by August. :D

If people want to camp here under their wing, that would be great. Or, if you don't have a wing, you can still camp here or down at our lake (snakes and bugs!!!!). :D There is a bathroom and kitchen in the hangar.

I'll see if Bill can bring the hot air balloon again.

People are welcome to come anytime, even a day or two early and are welcome to stay longer, too. The guest room and hangar room are tentatively booked, but we have the sofa bed in the living room or floor space in the front room. We'll find a spot for ya somewhere. :D

If anyone wants to stay at the Super 8 in town, we'll provide one of Tom's POS farm trucks (guaranteed to be worse than airport courtesy cars :D). They have rooms and suites available at this point in time, so feel free to book one now if you want.

I might be able to talk Barb into taking someone home with her, too. :D

Fishing at our lake is also available (boat and trolling motor provided as well as an old POS canoe) and we'll fry the fish if you catch them. You can swim in the lake if you want, but it's icky and has snakes in it.

We prefer that people don't bring their dogs here since it freaks out our kitties, and the kitties run the show here.

I'll probably start another thread after I get done mowing. I will say, last year was the absolute best birthday I ever had in my life. :)

Oh, yea, no presents or cards are necessary, and I told Tom, no singing Happy Birthday this time! :D I just want to spend time with my friends. :)

We don't want you to get into any more trouble. :D But, it would be great if you came.

But there is no reason that an Archer can't make it into your strip (unless it soggy then no one will make it in)

I'm the Club Secetary I better be able to get permission to land at a private grass feild as nice as Diana's! It has nothing to do with insurance and everything to do with a little private feild here called Finkhaven and someone almost pranging the plane and not having the good sense to stop flying there as it was above their ability.

It just wont be the same not flying in. :nonod:

Well, sometimes taildraggers can make it in here when nosedraggers can't. But, it won't be soggy in late August.

Well, it isn't all that nice. :D The longer (Archer) runway is rough and bumpy, especially on each end, which we don't use, but some airplanes need to use it, but it's rough. The runway was never graded, so you can feel the berms and old croprows. And there are power lines right at one end.

I'm coming!!!! But I'll need transportation to the nearest hotel...because if I'm coming, I'm staying all night...:)
I think there's a Super 8 or something there, right?? We'll all survive one night there...surely...we're PILOTS!!! :D

The guest room in the old farmhouse is now yours. :)

I'm a little on the shorts right now, after paying for my dinner at Gaston's. I will have to carefully calculate the extra's for that trip to see if I can swing it. The cost of cornstarch, talcum powder, body powder, tick and chigger spray, mosquito mist & netting, sunscreen, heat stroke medicine (quinine water & spirits) and all that stuff add up pretty quick. A man has to manage his money, don'cha know?

Does that mean that you're coming? :D

How about if I supply (apply)the chigger stuff (calamine) afterwords? Is that a sufficient enticement? You would look cute covered with pink polka dots. :D
