I can tell you if people were searching you--but I won't release addresses--honestly I am thinking about modifying things to where I don't collect any statistics and don't log anything--that way--I can't be responsible for, nor, can I hand over records..if I don't even have them.

OK, I just did a Google search on my name. Found very few of us in a variety of genealogy sites. Then I searched on Aunt Peggy and found I am a porn star. Something I really didn't need to know.:frown2:

Smart move, Jesse....

BTW, drop me a PM if you see searches on me recently.... tnx.

I googled my real neame and was pleased at the amount of chaff out there...someone would need to know a fair amount about me already to get useful information on line. As for Cap'n Jack...Disney movies keep me safely anonymous...

I only saw 2 "Aunt Peggy" items on Google that looked like they had porn potential. The bad news was they were in the first few listings.:drama:

I think there are two people in the world with my name and one of them is me. We compete on Google for number of hits.

I did a similar search. Teller comes up with either Penn and or stuff about jobs at banks. Searching my full name...well it appears I'm a very successful author of travel books. Who knew. Searching my screen name, of course, brings up pretty much everything I've ever written here.

Problem with a minimum post count. People equate post count with expertise, sometimes all it does is raise the noise level by people trying to get to the "magic" number.

See what you did now, you made a lurker post!

The whole idea of a minimum post count strikes me as being elitist. Message boards are cliquish enough by nature.

Welcome to the zoo! :)

999 more posts and you'll be worthy of listening to.

just kidding

The thing I like about post counts, isn't that it means that person is more qualified, as much as it means that person had to go through some effort. It would probably lead to more noise being generated--but it would also lead to less people reading stuff we wanted to keep to our friends--which is often a good thing

I too think it's a good idea, though I'd put the count closer to 250. Keep in mind, though, that it would not be a way to hide posts from the FAA or the authorities. Not even the anonymous posts can do that, because they can subpoena records or, if you're a conspiracy theorist, hack into the systems and get the information without a warrant in the name of National Security.

I agree Grant. That's why I thought the "have you ever busted bravo" post was a little risky.

The Purple Board is members only. But I thought that there were a lot of people here who did not like that type of board?

I'm not saying make all of PoA private - Just have one private forum for discussing things we may not want the general public to see. I've given examples already.

Using the front porch metaphor - We're still going to invite anyone who walks by to join us on the front porch for a beer and listen to our yarns about flying, and we're going to leave the music on full blast so that we can attract folks who might just be in the area. But, we would have a front door and a living room that's not accessible to the random dude who walked up for the first time today, so that we can talk about things that we don't yet trust random dude knowing. When random dude has been hanging with us on the porch for a while and we've gotten to know and trust him, we'll let him in the front door as well.

Well for whatever reason they chose the result is that you could not see inside until you were approved member. I recall a lot of people on this board complaining about that on the Purple Board. It seems strange that many would now want what they were complaining about.

Incorrect. All of the existing forums (except SZ, of course) would remain public. A new "Private Matters" forum would exist as the living room inside the house, but we'd still be partying on the front porch too.

The overall driving requirements seems to be to shield PoA from the search engines.

Incorrect - Again, NOT the whole forum. Just one new room.

The second question is if what Tim is asking for what everyone really wants AND making a forum private accomplishes that then just change the Lesson Learned forum a 'opt in' forum like SZ.

That would be TERRIBLE!!! Lessons learned already offers anonymous posting, and is potentially the most valuable forum that we have to the general public, or at least the greater pilot population.

I see no reason to create a quasi-elitist 'members only' forum.

Probably because you clearly don't understand what we're asking for.

Since we all know that Google and other search engines are reading this forum I would recomend that you do not type something that you would not want a stranger to read.

The issue here is that we cannot even share things with our best friends without sharing them with the entire world. I would really like to post some of my flight experiences to be read by my friends, and I'm sure there are others who would share more with us if there was a way NOT to scream it out to the entire world.

I think that this is a way over the top reaction to a situation that most likely does not exist.

Scott, what is your problem? You haven't even read the thread with enough comprehension to understand what we're asking for, but you're posting repeatedly in an apparent effort to derail something that you don't even understand. Please - More eyes, less fingers.

Say a person posts in the protected forum something that they would not want read by the general public that could be damaging to the poster's employer. That information escapes and the person loses their job. Could the poster then in turn come back at the MC and sue for damages because there was an extension of safety made by the MC and they possible failed in their duty of care?

Seems that if this private forum is set up that it is an attempt to pass a poster personal responsibility for their posts over to the MC.

Oh, Jesus H. Christ. We're adults here. We're pilots, even. We can understand a disclaimer. We can accept that there is responsibility in posting on a forum and that it may "leak" even if it's "protected." Does that mean we don't even try to protect anything, and thus miss out on some potentially very valuable content?

Trade ya. I just Googled my name and came up with over 6 million hits.. that's what I get for having such a common name. Actually it's nice to hide in the numbers. :)

One can worry themselves silly over liability or they can just ignore it. Personally, I put zero thought towards liability, but I also have a lot less assets at risk than some others on this forum.

"future earnings"....
I don't live my life in fear. Fear of lawsuits over potential future earnings which may or may not even exist is beyond my concern. "Future earnings" lawsuits are more common if you were injured and are now unable to work--you may include the loss of your "future earnings".

Suing someone that has few assets with the pay being their "future earnings" is less common--and lawyers are only going to try if they're being paid big money to do it. Not that profitable.

Kent I understand what you asking for. You want to be protected from yourself in making statements. The thing is that PoA is a public forum. This is akin to talking with your firends in a public place. If it is soemthing you do not want the search engines to know about, use PM or call on the telephone.

If you already ackonwledge that even if the forum is protected something coulsd "leak" then what is the point of the so called private forum? Sounds to me a like a cliquish little room for certain people where it can be some sort of 'Members Only' place.

There is already two forums where one can post anonymously if you have an issue that you do not want associated with your name for fear of admisntrative reatilation. That is the Lesson Learned and Medical forums.

For some, it's not so much personal liability as it is company liability (depending on role in company), the cost and distratction of a lawsuit even it you win (many lawsuits are filed knowing that the plaintiff can't win - they're filed because they know the cost of defense is enough to evoke a settlement), and for personal reputation. And many of us who have roles in the corporate or consulting worlds find the last one to be the most important.

I've know a number of folks that ignore liability - most fall into one of two categories: no assets to be attractive enough to be a target, or those with enough money to defend an expensive long-term lawsuit.

YMMV.

It is good to have a common name. I think there are 4 or 5 of me at work. I've always had 1 to 3 that live near me even when I moved to the boonies.

I checked DejaNews now Google Groups, manyyears back and had to go to the fourth or higher results page to find a Usenet post that was actually from me. I'm sure it's way, way further back now.

"future earnings"....

FWIW
I was involved in a very tragic mess (some dead kids) because I owned the vehicle involved (under Michigan law, the owner is liable as well as the driver)- I make a reasonable living as an engineer, and there were some law suits filed, but in the end it was all settled through the insurance company.

In your case, that's probably because there's a much more prolific poster with your name from Oklahoma City. (I knew him long before I got on here; that confused me for a short time.)

Ditto.

I assume the only reason for wanting to "privatize" a forum or the whole webboard is to avoid search bots since anyone who really wants to can access the forum contents by signing up for membership. Aren't there any ways to thwart the bots without requiring a hundred posts by a member before gaining full trust?

Could we require interpretation of one of those distorted pictures when establishing a member ID as well as when viewing posts as a guest? Wouldn't that prevent Google searches from seeing the posts?

And if Google is needed to bring more members in (remind me why we want to do that anyway), perhaps there would be a way to "sanitize" posts onto a shadow site that searches could see and some means of redirecting the searcher to the real board?

One other thought I had was that it would be really nice if there was a way for a post to be made visible to members only by the poster with the default being public.

It's even easier than that. Google, as well as most other reputable companies, honor directions that ask them not to index a site. It takes one line of text or, in the case of this forum software, probably just a setting. 10 seconds.

That's a good reminder. It's hard to imagine your future earnings, years and years, being garnished, but it does happen. Carrying insurance is only prudent....

I was actually around in the early 1980s and rubbed elbows with such as Ward and Randy who invented the BBS. I just didn't talk much on the "'net" for a while.

Lemme tell you my "grandchildren" story about working with the guys who got SMP Unix working (right) on Intel chips.

And what I am saying is that I want to be able to talk to my friends in a semi-private place. Sometimes I want to chat in the hangar instead of out on the ramp with a megaphone. I don't want to be protected from myself, I want to share information with a group limited to something less than the entire world.

If it is soemthing you do not want the search engines to know about, use PM or call on the telephone.

I just might make you regret that statement. :p ;)

There is already two forums where one can post anonymously if you have an issue that you do not want associated with your name for fear of admisntrative reatilation. That is the Lesson Learned and Medical forums.

But what I want to post does not fit within Lessons Learned or Medical Matters and I do not want to jeopardize the anon function in those forums by posting material inappropriate for them. Besides, it's not like I don't want people to see who I am - I don't want "anon", I want a room where I can close the door.

The Spin Zone, as it requires a user to be registered *and* to opt-in, is invisible to the search engines.

I used to think I had a pretty unique name - turns out there's another me in FL (different middle name, and about 10 years age difference) - we're now friends on Facebook, which looks pretty wierd. Also, he has a Facebook friend (I think it's his dad) who has the same first/last name as my dad. Finally, found another individual named the same as my brother, as well.

So maybe all that's needed for now would be another forum that requires opting into but has the same rules as the other non-SZ forums. Call it the "Twilight Zone" or "Secret Room".

If it's for kids only, I probably won't be allowed in. BTW I still think the "Technical Corner" ought to be called the "Geek Zone".
You might be on to something there. Considering the elitness of a members only section maybe we can take your suggestion of the technical corner and call it the "Geek Zone" while at the same time the new members area and call it the "Greek Zone" in honor of the Collegiate Greek system of cliquish clubs. :D:D;)

"Twilight Zone". LOL. That gets my vote.
