Pee smells like meat??

Its gross, I know, and it may not be anything, but I'm curious....

For the last few months, if I eat strong meat - for example, Meat Chilli, or Taco Bell meat, or even Meatloaf sometimes, my pee smells like what I ate.

If I eat bland food, my urine either doesn't smell, or it smells like pee. Is this normal, or something I should be concerned about?

First of all, I'm not a doc & I didn't watch House last night.

A quick google search (this thread is #3) suggest u might have an urinary tract infection. Before the search I was going to say you may have a kidney problems or diabetes since diabetics sometimes pass protiens (keytones?) when not properly managed.

In any event, I'd see a doc if it doesn't clear up ASAP. If it does clear up I might still see a doc, but thats because I'm fond of my equipment.

You also may be dehydrated. Strong smelling, darker yellow colored urine is often an indicator that you aren't getting enough "clean" fluids (liquids not containing things that make you pee like caffeine) . Drink more water/juice. A properly hydrated person's urine should look about champagne colored. (Which says something about champagne too... ;) )

Also not a doctor. Seek medical advice.

Well it beats your meat smelling like pee!

Seriously, are you drinking enough water?

All joking aside, go get it checked out with your GP. Sounds silly, and can be a bit embarrassing, but don't worry about the embarrassment.

Cheers,

-Andrew

I'm not a urologist (although I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express), but my guess is you don't smell meat so much as spices (you mention chili, etc).

And FWIW, I think there's something to the dehydration theory: the less water there is in your urine, the higher the concentration of other stuff. It'll look darker and smell stronger, no matter what it smells like.

BTW: this one gets my vote for "Weirdest Thread Title Ever". :D

Ha Greg. Ask me after I eat some asparagus.

:D

No kidding....but man what the HELL does asparagus do to urine to get it to smell so freaking horrible? I really enjoy asparagus, but man I feel like I am gagging on a maggot when peeing after eating it! :nonod:

A certain enzyme breaks down a certain amino acid found only in asparagus resulting in the smell. Interestingly, only some people have that enzyme. For example, I'm not affected by the phenomenon.

UTI
Dehydration
New or different medication or herbal supplement
STD

Actually a variety of sulfur compounds are broken down.

ok, it seems that you have not gotten a serious answer, i sometimes get this too, especially when i eat taco bell or fast food

I think that the meat is artificially flavored and the artificial flavors come out unchanged in your urine, there is a type of candy in japan that will make your pee smell like the flavor of the candy, like grape or lime, i have noticed this for a long time now, so if you don't want your pee to smell like meat or other things, don't eat artificially flavored fast food

for more information, you can look up esters in artificial flavoring

In the spirit of picking nits that this board is famous for..

A urologist is a SURGEON who has trained to treat the urinary tract using primarily a scalpel.

a NEPHROLOGIST is a doctor of internal medicine who has trained to treat the urinary tract using drugs (as well as prescribing dialysis).

So.. in other words, A urologist wouldn't give a rats ass what your pee smelled like unless he could cut on what was causing it. A nephrologist might.

Do all you guys actually go around smelling your pee? I only look at color. Having gotten a kidney stone once, a long time ago, I watch for blood. But I sure do not smell the pee.

About the only thing that freaks me out is when I see red stuff in the toilet after doing number 2. Then I remember that I had beets the night before and flush.

You don't have to bend over and smell the urine. After eating asparagus, for instance, there's a strong smell that wafts right up.

I feel comfortable enough to admit that the OP was me. I've linked bad pee smell to the following:

Heavily seasoned beef
Anything with garlic

The smell is so strong, you can smell it standing up away from the toilet.

Yes, each visit to the john is like a mini lab for me. I usually stand over and inhale incase it smells different, stronger or has almost no smell at all. I also check shade, brightness, and opacity to make correlations to activities & diet and suggest changes to myself as indicated.
