Only another day and I am off to American Banjo Camp!!

I leave tomorrow night for the Pacific NW and will finish up the trip on Friday by a drive to beautiful Fort Flagler park. That is the place where they filmed some of Officer and a Gentleman at so I hope you can visual the beauty of this place.

Then it is a full immersion weekend of banjo playing with some of the top players in this country. I went to this one two years ago and had a ball!!

The accommodations are 6Y9 like and that also lends charm to the place. The cook is great and the playing will go on all weekend long.

Here are some pick from two years ago

I am looking forward to meeting up with some of my banjo buddies. It will be strange having a weekend without any airplane talk but hey, sometimes you have to make sacrifices!

You mean you're not going to figure out how to post at 4:02 AM and say "HI TED! I'M AWAKE!!!" ;)

I'll have my Q with me but it is kind of a pain to use to post to PoA. Also we tend to run into the wee hours jamming and then off to bed for a jsut a few hours to start again the next day. At the end of these things I have either built up some good finger callouses or actually worn the skin smooth form all the playing.

But I'll try to send you a message so you won't worry too much ;)

Have a great time here in God's Country. You're coming just in time for some decent weather. If I had my medical back I'd fly up to 0S9 to say hi!

I have this vision of the Gary Larson cartoon, where the Devil is holding open a door for a guy in tails, and says "Your room is in here, Maestro," said room being filled with banjo players. :D

Have you ever met Mike Snider? He is one hell of a banjo picker and has a string band that is second to none. He is also a pilot. He and I have met several times and the guy will leave you in stitches after talking with him for 5 minutes.

No I haven't and I don't recognize the name either, I'll have to look him up. It might be a style thing as I am into what is called Old Time or clawhammer banjo and not Bluegrass. I am very excited to be taking another class this weekend with Cathy Barton who played with GrandaPa Jones and Ken Perlman. Some of you finger style guitar players may recognize that name.

Thanks, Scott, you sure know how to make a Sunshine feel loved. ;)

He doesn't have any commercial stuff and sells CD's by himself. Here's a youtube video to give you an idea. :D

Here's another vid with more music from him and his band with less comedy.

Enjoy your time with Cathy and Ken! Ken and Mike play the same claw hammer style.

I just now noticed that the thread title comes dangerously close to Penthouse Letters. :hairraise:

<sigh>... The Far Side rules so hard.

:D

So - how does Banjo camp work for jamming? Do you pick someone you like the looks of and ask to jam, or are you assigned partners? Do banjo players have the same ego as guitar players?

Moreover, do other musicians join y'all and you get a Rocky Mountain Jam Band going?

There are two tracks at banjo camp, old time and bluegrass. So after the evening concerts we break up into groups based on our playing style and then ability. There are advanced jams, medium and slow jams. In those jam groups there is usually one guitar and one fiddle accompanist assigned by the faculty. We then get to know each other and pick out a few tunes to work on that most people will already know and then jam away.

Can't imagine how I missed that series of films. I wonder if my TiVo will get it with my "AFI top 100 Movies" Guru guide.

LOL. A font of useless pop-culture trivia, I am.

Actually, I think I caught it about 4 or 5 years ago after I had broken up with my girlfriend. Dish was running a AP + AP2 double feature on the PPV.

Bored + Drunk + Remote Control = Impulse Purchase!

Those movies are a lot funnier when you're drunk! :goofy::drink:

P.S. Eurotrip falls into that funnier-when-drunk category, too.

What's he definition of perfect pitch? You toss the bagpipes into the dumpster so they land on top of the banjo!

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Now THAT is funny!!

(and I really do like bagpipe music)

You know the difference between bagpipes and a banjo?

The banjo burns a little longer...

Told to me by a banjo player whom I repsect a great deal and would jam with any time (I play guitar).

John

What's the difference between a banjer picker and a large pizza?

A large pizza can feed a family of 4.

What do you call a banjer picker in a suit?

Defendant.

Banjo players are really good, or awfully bad.

No middle ground, there.

You can say that for a lot of instruments. Think saxophone. I thought I'd like to try it but I don't think *I* could stand waiting for me to find the notes.

Here are a couple of pics from camp. I have a few more on my other camera. But I wanted to let you see what banjo camp looks like.

BTW short story is that the camp was great and the WX could not have been better.

If You drop a banjo, an accordion, and a set of bagpipes off a 30-story building, which one will hit the ground first?

Who cares?

Looks like a good time was had by all.

It was. Bill Keith was there again and he had some good stories about his days playing with Bill Monroe. This is the guy that invented melodic 3-finger bluegrass banjo playing, knows, played, and has dirt on Earl.

Plus there were other players there that y'all may not know that were equally important to America Bluegrass and Old Time traditions. I had a great time and got to spend some good quality time picking Reed Martin's head on style and banjo lore, Cathy Barton and Dave Para took time to speak with me and others about GrandPa Jones, Brad Leftwitch had a great class on Round Peak style. Brad is probably the best documentor of that style and has several books out on it, Bob Carlin had some great stories and brought some of the new banjos from the manufacturer he works for including the new cello-banjo they are coming out with.

A Russian, a Cuban, and two Americans, (a guitar player and a banjo player) were sharing a compartment on a train. The Russian in an attempt to impress the other passengers says, "In Russia we have so much vodka that we can afford to throw it away." He then throws a bottle of fine Russian vodka out the window. In a spirit of one-upmanship, the Cuban replies, "In Cuba, we have so many fine cigars that we can simply throw them away." And the Cuban proceeds to throw a box of the finest Cuban cigars out the window. Not to be outdone, the banjo player says nothing, he just stands up and throws the guitar player out of the window
