the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

If that's in reference to fossil fuels, that's an interesting view. Didn't oil companies have a great year in the stock market, especially compared to other sectors? I think someone who bought an oil company mutual fund at the beginning of the year, or Exxon for example, would be up by quite a bit. And gas prices are back to where they were like 14 years ago, which is pretty remarkable in my opinion.

lol ya ok. this will be my only reply to this as I don't want to go back and forth but how are gas prices compared to 13 years ago? or 7 years ago? it was nice of you to pick one of the highest prices in that timeframe to compare current prices to, that was convenient of you.

Yes, because they're on a clear downward trend after the greatest disruption in the supply chain since WW2.
People tend to make a lot of emotional connections with market performance and gas prices with whomever is in office at any given time. But looking at it historically, there's not as much statistical correlation party-to-party especially since these same trends are occurring pretty much everywhere in the world. I'm wondering if you also give credit to the current admin for the positive trends as well, or just the negative ones.

It looks like my major IRA will finish the year even or slightly up in value. Some securities are trying to suck the life out of everything, but that’s largely being masked by the performance of one oil royalty fund.

So glad we bought some rental houses a few years back. I wish we’d bought more.

It took several hours today to rollover my wife's old Walmart/Merrill Lynch 401K account to Fidelity. We tried doing online but when it asked how much to be withheld for taxes it would not take 0%. Went to a local ML office and they could not help and said no office in Dallas could do it because it was a Walmart/ML 401K. They gave us a phone number; I hate phone trees! The gal we phoned said click maximum withholding on the website. Does not make sense to me but it worked. The ML website asked for her Fidelity account info, but they are still going to mail us a check, no taxes withheld, instead of wiring it to Fidelity. o_O

Now we either have to download an app from Fidelity or go to and office to deposit the check. Since she left Walmart, 3 years ago, ML have not snail mailed us anything and their emails have been going into my wife's junk mail folder. We had forgotten about it.

On the positive side I was expecting less than 5K but it is worth a little over 11K.

Rollovers are a terrible pain, especially with the tech that should be available to all parties nowadays. I did one recently between two major financial institutions and it took a couple of mailed checks and a couple weeks time to complete. Weird.

boy, oh boy, I hope Hallmark included one extra card in the box of Christmas cards...

if not, then someone will get an envelope from me with something exactly the same size as a Christmas card in it.

?????

I just got an email from a lawyer asking me to call him.

Should I be worried.??

some little rodent chewed through one my strings of lights... right near the extension cord.

I hope the little rat learned a lesson.

I think I got the ninja mouse that was living in my hangar. It was licking the peanut butter off my traps for a few weeks, but I had a mouse in one of the electronic traps last week, and this week all my traps are still set & baited.

That, or it climbed into your wing and died there. I hate mice.

Hint: Mice love sunflower seeds! The peanut butter is a great lure but I like adding a sunflower seed or two sticking out ...

I had to get blood work done for my annual physical this morning. You know the deal, fasting for at least 12 hours. I always get their early (before they open) because there's always a line. Today was no exception, I got their 20min before they open and was 6th in line. Then I got a great idea! I want to open a taco stand right outside of the office! Can you imagine..... This place is always packed and always has a line no matter what time of day you go. Everyone in line has been fasting for at least 12 hours and you set up a taco stand right outside the door! I think it would be money!

I came up with the idea (not original, I know) that to increase my dispatch rate in 2023 it would make sense to buy a second plane. Fiki twin would do nicely.

In (perhaps) related news, my wife stopped talking to me.

Win win?

jk

Great work. What do you think she will do for you if you buy a third plane?

Some guy gave my dad some solid advice about buying airplanes. How often does your wife even visit the airport? Just buy the plane now, and by the time she notices that you have it maybe 5 or 10 years from now, you can just tell her, "Honey, we've always had that airplane!"

well, that thread was entertaining (in a way) for a while...

(that's all I can say about it...)

This might actually be worthy of its own thread. Anything I need to know about jump starting an airplane with a car? (Both 12V)

Im bout to go do it!!

Make sure someone is at the control of the airplane...

I've seen it done. It's a lot easier with the adapter for the piper power port, assuming that plane has one. Of course that doesn't help you right now. Bad part is you're going to have a running plane, on ice, that needs to be disconnected from the jumper cables. I hope you have some help.

We'd all be more impressed if you hand propped it like the cub. Actually.... maybe don't do that on ice, either...

Ok you would think it’s as easy as jumping a car. But I couldn’t register a voltage rise on the battery - so I bailed. I probably wouldn’t have flown anyway this evening, given the questionable battery and questionable renters in front of me who “weren’t able to start it”. Add this to the list as reasons to own over rent.

Your airplane must have been demoted because it's missing a stripe.
It’s sooooooo fast, the stripes were ripped off!!

I don't want to be the sky is falling guy, but with some PA-28's and perhaps others, jump starting it with a dead battery and then having the alternator trying to charge the dead maybe frozen battery in flight could be a bad plan. Yeah, that's my record for today for a run-on sentence.

This risk is why I decided early not to fly. The idea was to pump a few decimals of voltage for overnight.

Two thoughts.... did you turn the master on? On most of the pipers that external plug is switched.

Also a good chance it's frozen if it's been low for a while in this cold. Nothing you could do besides take it out and thaw (I'm assuming the hangar is unheated? ) and even then it's probably ruined anyway.
