Half Fast
The Half Fast clan has resumed its tradition of kicking off the holiday season with a few days of volunteering at the Atlanta "Operation Christmas Child" processing center. We'll spend several days with family and friends inspecting and packing shoebox gifts to go to kids all over the world, coupled with lots of Christmas music and Christmas movies. It's a great way to get into the Christmas spirit.

So have your holidays begun? How are you getting into the season?

So far - I turned on my Pentatonix Pandora channel to listen to when I drive. Other than that...:dunno:

Someone used my credit card to purchase 1800 bucks worth of ski equipment. And also sent me the address where it is to be shipped in New Jersey...

Great idea...I've started with this thread. I didn't "like" Zeldman's post because, well other than the fact that he posted it, there's nothing to like. I hate thieves.

I like that you hate thieves

Rest assured, I am happy to report that one call took care of the problem. I am cleared of all charges...

We do a little nativity festival here so I'm playing cello for that this week. I hope I don't suck.

Too bad the credit card companies don't have the man power to stake out the address in New Jersey when the package gets there.

Cool! Our church was the local collection center in our area. They had 4-5 ABF pup trailers in the parking lot Sunday before last - not sure how many boxes they actually collected through there.

Ah! That looks very cool! A logistical nightmare, I'm sure, but an awesome feat to pull off!

They do it pretty well. They have 4 staging areas where the Ryder trucks park, and we have slot reservations for arrival. The only 'bad' thing that has happened to me twice is that my destination truck emptied before I got loaded up and my destination changed. Other than that it flows pretty smooth. Now, as far as behind the scenes goes, I have no idea.

We’re a drop-off location for other churches. This was the first year my wife and I were the leaders, and we processed 3557 shoeboxes through our church. It was pretty exhausting.

I co-own a dance studio with my daughter (not a business I ever expected to be in but...) we put a Christmas tree in the lobby with Angel Tree tags (specify a local child, gender and age with a wish list) to take, shop for and return with gifts. My wife & I take the leftover tags and fill them... So that's coming now as all is due back by Monday.

We do a few of those boxes every year as well as do a few off the angel tree.

Lockheed used to have Angel Tree and I always did a few tags. Also Toys for Tots, and there was something for military I participated in but I don’t recall the name right now.

Isn't Toys for Tots Marine Corps sponsored?

Yes, it is.

There was also something to send gifts to servicemen overseas but I don’t recall the name. I bought lots of coffee, candy, snacks, paperbacks, etc., for it.

I bought someone a 400 dollar lobster dinner in the Atlanta area last week...wish I was invited.

You would think that Santeria, a religion with elements of Catholicism, would have some sort of Christmas celebration. Maybe I'll sacrifice a reindeer this year and call it good.

Keep it aviation-related. Sacrifice a flying reindeer.

I don't remember the program name but I was a beneficiary of that program when I was deployed to Kirkuk Iraq over the holidays. It was a whole lot of wet wipes and candy. Unfortunately, they stored the boxes in a spare room at the bottom of the tower and mice and rats got to it before it could all be used. It was nice reading the letters from the school kids addressed to, "any soldier." I guess they think everyone who wears a uniform is a soldier.

For a while, there was also a progam called something like "Adopt A Sniper" that collected gun tools, cleaning supplies, etc. I don't think it exists any more.

New Jersey has mountains? Or perhaps they were just being optimistic that it may grow some soon?
