I recently decided to test, which one is faster. Dropped a video of the trip on YT. This was a flight through busy Atlanta class bravo. Let me know in the video comments if you like the “24” style format. Had a lot of fun flying and creating the video.

Is there anyone who thinks a typical car on public roads is faster than a Mooney?

Or if you're using your home as a starting point, and adding in getting the crew car or a rental and then getting to the destination, that adds in so many variables that it becomes irrelevant.

flying is waaaaaay more fun.

oh, and, crossing small bodies of water will be a win for the airplane.

Agreed 110%. If we can't sell planes/avionics here, we shouldn't be allowed to "sell" videos here either.

since when are we not able to sell planes/avionics here?

They're in "The Classifieds" and likewise YouTube spam should be in its own forum too.

oh, ok. so we can sell planes avionics here. weird, I'm fully capable of not clicking on plane/avionics for sale threads I don't want to read, seems like I can just do the same for threads on videos I don't wanna watch. but yeah, it would be easier if they were all in one spot, I could just ignore that entire subforum.

If you're looking for feedback, I offer this:
- the editing and production values seemed excellent. I say "seemed" because:
- I watched the first 30 seconds or a minute then wondered "how long is this video? 16 minutes? Yeah I'm not watching 16 minutes of video just to see which way was faster for him." So I scrolled to the end.

Maybe there was interesting content in the middle, I don't know, because I was able to get your answer to the video's title without watching it. And honestly, it's not exactly a burning question I've had that's worth that much of my time. Sorry, but you wanted feedback...

"Here" means Flight Following forum. The original reply had to do with moving this YouTube spam elsewhere, which is what we did with Classifieds.

If something is for sale, etc. it is tagged as such in the thread name (Look in the Classifieds) This thread you open what seems like a good topic but SURPRISE! YOUTUBE SPAM!

If not a special section for the YouTube spam, can we at least get it tagged up front to "see and avoid?"

Yeah, I think the OP has the wrong audience. Most of us here already knew the answer to the question without watching the video.

for whatever reason I feel that summarizes most of the aviation youtubers.....catering to the non-aviation crowd. like the one guy who posted a long video asking "should I take off with a tailwind with a mountain right in front of me or with a headwind and no obstacles?" (or something like that)......I mean, really? you think I'm gonna spend 40 minutes watching that video to try and figure that one out?? hellz no, but the non-aviation crowd will be all over that made-up drama. along with "which is faster, a car or an airplane?"

He’s not looking for feedback, he’s looking for clicks on his YT video. It’s a bait.

Clicks= monetization.

Unfortunately No, not looking for and not getting any monetization. You have to have over a 1000 subscribers before being eligible. So I'm 100% sharing my fun for the sheer fun of it. That’s the beauty of small content creators, the work is done for the fun and enjoyment of doing it.

And I agree with the other comments, having a sub-forum for videos would make a lot of sense. I’d check out new content creators because maybe there’s folks who do fun videos and not just the “big” guys who have tens of thousands of subs that YT pushes into your feed and get paid doing it.

Interesting, what kind of aviation films do you watch, if any? What excites you? Was there a story or just a 30 second clip of someone landing?

My own experimentation moving out west has been 200 to up to 700 nautical miles door to door flying is best

Even though I'm not the one being asked this question I'll respond, because why not

Personally I find most of contemporary aviation YouTube videos are a little annoying. They tend to be very self-aggrandizing and includes a lot of subtle flex.. like Stefan Drury, Niko Wings, Matt Guthmiller, CitationMax. They're all annoying and it seems their videos primarily cater to a non-pilot #Instagram! crowd

Paul Bertorelli, Aviation 101, Steveo, Fastback Flying, Blancolirio, Dan Gryder (if I'm in a masochistic mood).. those channels at least seem to have content directed more at pilots and have more technical or educational and interesting content (sometimes humorous), they are also a little less look-at-me!!!

.. I do believe this forum should have a YouTube subsection. The people who will give you flack simply won't click on it while the ones who are interested will go there.. win:win

No Mike Patey? Berto is an aviation treasure.

Berto's a hack. And AOPA plagiarizes. YT is a cesspool.

/bombsaway :D

As to the original question. For that distance, put me down for the car every day and twice on sunday, even if I were to stipulate it were slower door to door, which it isn't. You know what's worse than an AOG with no rental in situ 400-1100nm away? AOG with no rental in situ for a distance you could have driven between breakfast and lunch. :D

Unless you have a jet , most GA planes are just a pain in the ass for any sort of reliable travel - sure you can do it but it is more akin to taking that motorcycle trip across the country , a lot of fun memories but not exactly practical.

I took my airplane to Cuba. Kinda hard to drive there.

I like shooting videos. But I don't think sumping my fuel is entertainment. But that's why my videos are so bland. No VoiceOver, no commentary. "Look, here's me landing a light sport at a Bravo". Doesn't even start until I'm a few miles from the runway and ends before I leave the runway. LOL It's mostly shot for my entertainment, I'll post 'em here in case someone's bored enough to watch.

...And I did to PR. You know what he meant.

fwiw, only way I do that again is if the tanks on my next rig are big enough to non-stop it from FL. I rather ditch and collect the insurance check, than AOG in a caribbean client state at this juncture. It's not hyperbole to say it'd be both cheaper and a lot less logistical hassle to sink it in the ocean and airline back. Loved the one-time experience, not doing it again in present range circumstances. :D

Meh. I took the Archer for a day trip to the beach. Hard to do that by car with a 7 hour drive each way, vs. a 2.5hr flight each way.

FWIW, he only has 67 subscribers. He doesn't get any money from youtube. Literally not a penny. And you have to be in the 50k subscribers range to make enough money to start to be worth noting. By then, the couple dozen views you get from PoA don't matter. It's a rounding error. So, long story short, no one is putting videos here to make money.

I do post my videos here and would be very supportive of creating a subforum for videos. I've made several friends through my videos here, but do recognize that not everyone cares about them. Would be great to have a section where people who want that content can look and those who don't can easily avoid.

So how does one get to the magic number of subscribers? Starts with a click. ;)

These videos are click bait.

Not really a fan of the video, but the topic is very legitimate.

I used to fly when there was no way I could have been there quicker than if in a car. That was because it was an excuse to fly. I still love an excuse to fly, but flying for practical transportation efficiency rather than for fun is a tough one to rationalize most of the time.

I fly the little taildragger around the lake country, usually early in the morning and purely for pleasure with absolutely no practical value beyond the smiles per gallon.

For practical transportation I fly the Mooney which is similar to the one in the video albeit severely updated and modified. Occasionally I will fly into Grand Prairie, South Center of the DFW MetroMess from NorthEast Texas about 120 miles. I live very close to my East Texas airport and am usually visiting very near KGPM. Due to the DFW traffic, I probably beat the car time by a wider margin than he did in the video, but when I do that flight it is NOT to save time, but to spare myself the traffic frustration. I learned to drive in Germany and driving US metropolitan areas drive me up the wall.

The most common trips we use the Mooney for is to go to Galveston. We have several family get togethers per year at the family beach house. The other is to Dripping Springs, near Austin to see the only child who moved away from our hometown. The Dripping Springs trip is about two hours and the Galveston trip is less than two hours in the air. Driving them is a minimum five hours, both less than ideal drives through tough city traffic.

I’ve never tallied the expense for flying or driving in order to compare the two. That seems as if it would be a hopeless project, especially with todays fuel prices. There is also the weather variable. Once you get there you are checking weather a lot looking for the right time to come home, which takes some fun and flexibility out of the trip.

Coincidentally, we flew back from Dripping (flew out of San Marcos) this morning. We got a good early start and in spite of a forecast of some low clouds were able to make a quick VFR flight out of it. Got home to the house by about 10:30. We were originally going to make the flight this afternoon and it was a good thing we did it this morning because there was some unexpected weather this afternoon here. Weather is, of course, the wild card. The advantage to doing the trip by SUV is you can leave most any time you choose and you can carry bigger Grandkid gifts.

The bottom line is that even if you’re talking about 200+ miles by air and something more by road, in spite of the time saved, at least in my case, the only reason I will fly even though I DO save time on those trips, is because my wife and I enjoy the flying more than the driving.

Didn't watch video, won't watch video spam.

126 miles airport to airport. Plane wins. 126 miles door to door, probably the car.
Why is it spam? Hint: it's not. At least, not any more than anyone's wordy story. Don't give me a lecture on people making money on YT; it's rather hard to actually make more than hobby money.
