Garmin 696 had an "abnormal powerdown" due to a low battery during database loading, and the device seems to have bricked itself.

Have called Garmin support, tried a card with the software update, tried all the loading sequences (softkeys 1+5+CLR, softkeys 1+5+RNG UP, holding joystick in, diagnostic mode), and I always get back to the a screen that shows Garmin, a "Databases" window, and the loading screen. RAM Test passed, battery works fine. Diagnostic mode shows the SD card inserted and "Waiting" on all the databases. And now Garmin is saying they don't offer full support for the 696 anymore, and they won't fix it, even if we send it in.

Anyone run into something similar and fix it? Shame that they won't fix the problem, but I guess they have to make money on new devices somehow...

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure if this is even related to your specific issue but my 750 is having database update issues. It started a month or so ago, my screen says compacting databases for update and just hangs there. I have contacted customer support, hopefully they will have a fix. Incidentally, this is not the first time this has happened. The last time, they released an update to the firmware.

Bummer. I'm sure the 750 will continue to be supported for a while, so hopefully they'll get you a fix. Have a 750 in another plane I fly a lot, but fortunately never ran into that issue. Good luck!

I am sure it's not the 750, if I pull, out the flightstream and put in an SD card, it updates fine. It's pilot and the database concierge.
