Oshkosh and Covid

Really? Hyperbole much? Wasn't the S&P at a 5 year high at the beginning of '22, then Russia got weird. Sure there was a blip in march/april of '20 followed by a climb to a 5 year high. I had a blast during covid, some epic BBQs, great vacations, good beer, and new distillery opened up in my area. There was a spike in unemployment but, there were many people that were impacted that didn't want to work. Laziness is not a symptom of Covid. Many companies couldn't get applicants, let alone fill open positions ranging from hourly assemblers or individual contributor professionals to senior management. I think the worst thing that happened to me during Covid was that the ski resorts closed early for the season in the spring of '20. Sure, restaurants took a hit but, they also didn't want to fill the jobs that were open in other fields. Hell, with the expanded use of video conference I am better connected to my parents that are 3000 miles away now than I was pre-covid. I suppose if you just want to watch Fox or CNN, then the sky is falling and should probably become a hermit prepper. And I never recall being shamed for anything I did during Covid.
A bump in the stock market is not the only measure of economic health. Plus, that quick rise up is all but lost.. check your 401K lately? There isn't any one single item that someone can point their finger at and say "THIS WAS IT" - however, we could have been more targeted with how we spent that stimulus money and it's still crazy to me that in the US an entity can force someone to shut down their legal business. WOW. "It's a free country, not"

People are wondering now "how did this inflation get so bad??" but that's what happens when you send a big part of the work force home, flood cash into an economy and then have a supply chain that can't, or won't, keep up with the demand. Holistically, our economy right now is in the trash can - COVID, Russia, all had a hand to play in it. But it started with COVID.

By the way, if jobs can't get filled it's because the pay sucks. The typical home is now around $500K, with rents in most urban areas (where the jobs are) also around $2K or higher. You can't save up for a $500K house making $50K a year, even if you do the old "just make your coffee at home" shtick. You realistically now need to earn at least $100K a year in most places to live "comfortably" and responsibly. I'd gladly trade back our 2019 economy if you ask me.

Now, I'm quadruple vaccinated and I'm all out of sympathy. I'm not wearing a mask and I'm going where I want, when I want. Vaccines are widely available. If you are too stupid to be protected, you deserve what you get.
Thank you. Maybe you can get the rest of the world to agree with you so I don’t have to hear all this inane ******** about how I need to be vaxed.

If inflation was a US-only thing, the dollar would be in the toilet. But…

I'll close with a shout-out to my Mom, who last month at age 101 kicked Covid. She complained of fatigue and intermittent fever for three days, and complained much more about boredom while waiting out the rest of her 10 day quarantine period. Farm women are tough.

Glad your mom did well ... awesome post!

The whole thing is a hoax. The only people who actually died were crisis actors. And many of them have died thousands of times to provide cover for the deportation of political prisoners back to Europe so they can be replaced with immigrants. Also, they are using the death certificates to obtain millions of absentee ballots printed on bamboo paper so that, along with the injected microchips that control the poll workers via Chinese thermostats, Charles Manson can be resurrected and win the next election.

There’s just one problem with that theory…

No understanding that aliens from the Moon who traveled back on the lander have gradually infiltrated every ruling class and are running the world now.

WAIT! I forgot they astronauts never went to the moon and it was staged in Las Vegas!

I apologize.

Wait…are you saying OSH was a hoax?!? But it seemed so real!

Man, I’m such a sucker…

What if this 'Rona thing is Earth's way of fixing the exponential population growth over the last century and a half?

Also, what if autism is the next adaptation to the rapidly changing landscape of technology? Do we really need to "bond" with other humans when we have access to all of this new technology?

I spent a LOT of time with my thoughts at sea...

<tin foil had on> ....the Soros group wanted this to happen....cough....cough....made it happen....

Correct. It was the Nazis that went to the moon and established a base on the "dark side".

BTW if you didn't catch Buzz Aldrin's cameo in Transformers 3, it is one of the all time greatest intersections of real life, Hollywood, and conspiracy theory.

Also, all Buzz Aldrin web bios apparently end with "he has a hell of a right hook." Which was another excellent meeting of conspiracy theory and real life.

I hate to be the guy who says "Oh yeah? What's your source?" but I've filled out my share of death certificates and I don't remember ever including anything irrelevant. If someone had Covid and died of pneumonia, that would be relevant. If someone came in with a bleeding ulcer, happened to test positive for Covid, and went on to bleed to death, the Covid test is irrelevant and shouldn't be listed as a cause of death, a contributing cause, or anything else except a comorbidity, along with hypertension, depression, anxiety, and celiac disease.

Perhaps you've seen it done some other way?
If someone was diagnosed with heart disease and died of natural causes and no autopsy was performed, what would their death be attributed to?

The truth of the matter is death comes eventually. Old people are always more fragile and prone to illness. I think that old people and those working with old people should totally take plenty of precautions to avoid transferring germs as much as possible, but I think they should do that with the common cold, the flu, pneumonia, and a myriad of other illnesses, too. I don't think that the US should have it's economy destroyed, it's population thrown into record levels of despair and self-harm due to isolation, and hundreds of thousands of people shamed because they want to experience their lives instead of simply breathing for 80 years.
Those working with old people do exactly that with the cold, the flu, pneumonia, and a myriad of other diseases.

But that's not relevant because this isn't a reply to what I said.

Why?

Serious question. I think stopping a world economy for this thing robbed the young to preserve the old, and I found THAT disgusting.

Leadership means making hard choices. We abdicated this one and will be feeling the aftershocks for a long time.

Oh I will agree 1,000% that leadership was abdicated, which is a large part of the reason so many Americans died. But if you seriously have to ask why I find it repulsive that some people clearly don't care that large numbers of people died simply because they were "getting Social Security", me trying to explain the answer won't do us any good.

as for 401k, that's a long term play and downturns have historically been followed by upturns (shocking). Additionally, downturns offer opportunities for beginning investors if, for instance they saved there stimulus check while taking advantage of the job market. The only people that should be worried about 401k are those planning on retirement in the next few years that would draw from it immediately. And I view that group like others on this board have viewed the elderly. The next crop of retirees isn't really contributing much anymore, they know the buzz words and like to talk about the past but, current technology has passed them by, they need to go and why should I care about their well being? Afterall, they had a good run but, its over.

Your comment about flooding the economy with cash, that's what caused many people to not work. Given the global aspects of the economy, the dollar is doing well, while the dollar is still valued higher than the Uraguayan Peso, you get fewer Pesos per dollar compared to five years ago. So that's a bad thing we should all be worried about.

Jobs, your experience is quite different than mine.

Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast "this one time at bandcamp and why you should be terrified" hosted by AOC (New York's Best Bartender) and Ted (Rafael Cancun) Cruz.

Catching up on this thread has reduced my faith in humanity by at least 40%.

... I just sincerely hope the community's collective understanding of aviation and piloting is better than its tenuous grasp of our healthcare and financial systems

It would depend on the presentation.

you might be surprised to know what is counted as a covid death.

Since April 2020, these have been the rules for classifying a death as covid. I see nothing surprising. The fact that these criteria are so stringent is part of what led to a pretty dramatic undercount. The million americans officially classified as covid deaths are probably about 2/3rds of the actual total. This is more or less true on a global basis as well.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvss/vsrg/vsrg03-508.pdf

"If COVID–19 played a role in the death, this condition should be specified on the death certificate. In many cases, it is likely that it will be the UCOD, as it can lead to various life threatening conditions, such as pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In these cases, COVID–19 should be reported on the lowest line used in Part I with the other conditions to which it gave rise listed on the lines above it. Generally, it is best to avoid abbreviations and acronyms, but COVID–19 is unambiguous, so it is acceptable to report on the death certificate. In some cases, survival from COVID–19 can be complicated by pre-existing chronic conditions, especially those that result in diminished lung capacity, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. These medical conditions do not cause COVID–19, but can increase the risk of contracting a respiratory infection and death, so these conditions should be reported in Part II and not in Part I. When determining whether COVID–19 played a role in the cause of death, follow the CDC clinical criteria for evaluating a person under investigation for COVID–19 and, where possible, conduct appropriate laboratory testing using guidance provided by CDC or local health authorities. More information on CDC recommendations for reporting, testing, and specimen collection, including postmortem testing, is available from: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/testing.html and https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/guidancepostmortem-specimens.html. It is important to remember that death certificate reporting may not meet mandatory reporting requirements for reportable diseases; contact the local health department regarding regulations specific to the jurisdiction. In cases where a definite diagnosis of COVID–19 cannot be made, but it is suspected or likely (e.g., the circumstances are compelling within a reasonable degree of certainty), it is acceptable to report COVID–19 on a death certificate as “probable” or “presumed.” In these instances, certifiers should use their best clinical judgement in determining if a COVID–19 infection was likely. However, please note that testing for COVID–19 should be conducted whenever possible."

Underreported? So that's why Massachusetts went back and said their count was high. Oh wait...sounds like OVERreported. But that's not possible.

oh sure. "pretty dramatic undercount" and "probably about 2/3rds of the actual" -pretty bold statements made without evidence, especially with massachusetts reducing the count in massachusetts by over 15%.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Why is there this continuous morbid fascination about the cause of death? If one is concerned about dying from COVID, get vaccinated. If one is still concerned, then withdraw from the world, move to Antarctica, become a hermit. What the hell else can one do?

AHA! Rant about it on POA. THAT WIILL CURE IT AND MAKE IT GO AWAY!!!!!!!!

Won’t it?

Cheers
