MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

Lack of instant replay. What??! Lack of rotary-wing flight model. What??! No backwards-compatibility (like in FSX) for FSX/FS2004 airplanes. What??! Something tells me they hacked out much of what MSFS used to be just so they could add people and cars (that can drive vertically up the sides of buildings, etc). Going back to FSX.
For me, it was about the fact that none of my devices worked with it, yokes, pedals, radio panels.... So sticking with XP11 for now.

No main issues here with MSFS,
Alpha and Bravo work better than on Xplane
VR works great (crashed in Xplane)
My issue is related to the G1000 in the T182T I bought, as it does not behave like it should (re AP alt control, IFR approach)

Come over to the dark side and join us on X-Plane 11. You get modern graphics, and with a free add-on, you can still find your street and house. :)

Reviving this thread. Has anyone been using MSFS recently with their updates/patches up-to-date? I believe they have the Beta version of Update 10 out right now for widespread user testing with the final to be released next month. From what I've been reading online, it's come along pretty well over the past year and a half with them rolling out updates on a rapid schedule. You can look at that as good or bad (bad: released product with lots of errors, good: they seem to be committed to getting it up-to-par).

I'm getting ready to upgrade the graphics card in my desktop (probably GTX1080ti or RTX2070ti) in order to run it at higher frame rates/resolutions, but I'm just interested to see if anyone has been keeping up with it recently.

Over the past 1.5 months, I have completely switched over to MSFS from being an X-Plane user for years. The overall simulator immersion is just incredible in VR. Sure, the MSFS flight model is not as exactly accurate as X-Plane. But - the weather depictions, what you see on the ground, the level of systems detail in some of the aircraft that are coming out (Fenix A320, PMDG 737) are all simply amazing. I did get a new GPU (a 3080 Ti) to go with my i9-9900k overclocked to 5.0GHz.... With that, I can run my Quest 2 on mostly ultra (with clouds on high) locked in at half the refresh rate with smooth, stable frames.

It is simply stunning. Far more immersive than X-Plane. Granted - I use this just for fun and entertainment at this point, not for any kind of training. Although the JustFlight Arrow is a not-bad representation of an Arrow III.

That sounds pretty awesome. I don't think I'll go VR with it at this point, but the RTX 2070ti could probably handle VR at lower settings without getting too unstable. The 3080ti is a monster of a GPU (with a monster price tag). I've read that there are still some hang-ups with the built-in ATC (delayed clearance/instructions when on an approach) and live weather not working consistently, but I'm not too concerned about that. I'd just like to get some use out of the Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo I have sitting new in box that I've yet to hook up. Might try getting on VatSim once I get MSFS up and going to see what that world is like. I've flown hundreds of hours in older versions of MSFS, but never did the VatSim stuff.

Yeah, built-in ATC in any flight sim I have ever used just sucks. VATSIM works good enough - it's not the real-deal, but it's pretty close. Those kids do a good job. There are a few guys who are real TRACON or center controllers, too. It's just for fun and it adds to the immersion, in my opinion. Plus, it's kind of funny to listed to the folks who just bought MSFS and have no clue how to talk to ATC try to get off the ground at a busy airport.

I got kinda lucky with the 3080 Ti.... prices came back down to MSRP and I had some Amazon credit... so I sort of just went for it. You should definitely break out those alpha/bravos and set 'em up! Your 2070Ti could also handle VR... especially after SU10 gets released with DLSS. DLSS has been proving to really help mid-range cards with performance, especially in VR.

I can't recommend strongly enough to try Pilot Edge. Worth the price of admission.

As far as MSFS, I recently jumped back into it to download the Top Gun update, but played it once and that was it. Waiting on Xplane 12 to come out and finishing my sim cockpit in the mean time.

What are you building? I thought of doing this for a time several years ago, but once I got VR working so well I abandoned the idea. I have seen pics and videos of some epic home sim cockpit/flight deck setups.

As luck would have it, a used 2080ti and 750W power supply popped up locally for under $400, so I may step up to that instead of the 2070ti. That's about as big as my computer case can handle as it isn't gaming chasis. Probably not much of a benefit over the 2070ti for my uses, but it's about as high end as I can go on the Dell XPS rig.

What's the vendor of PilotEdge over Vatsim? I know nothing about either of them. Is it just the fact that those choosing to pay for PilotEdge generally removes a lot of the "amateur hour" that might encompass a free platform?

My experience is 20 years out of date. But I would say Vatsim is an ATC simulator that includes multiplayer simulated traffic to control while Pilotedge is a flight simulator add-on that provides real people controlling traffic.

Correct. There's an actual training program for both controllers and pilots. Highly recommended. The only downside is its only the western half of the US, but if you're using it for training purposes anyway then it's better to go to places you aren't familiar with.

Also, good timing and choice on the 2080ti. It'll run anything you want to do. I've never had an issue with mine.

I had an Oculus Rift that I tried with Xp11 but the headset technology just wasn't there yet. Started building out my own aluminum profile setup using Real Sim Gear hardware, a 2nd monitor running Air Manager for the panel, and Honeycomb flight controls. Ultimate goal is to market it and fill in the mid-range price gap but nowhere near ready for that yet.

Vatsim has "real people" performing ATC duties and is an add-on you run alongside whichever flight Sim you're on. You just start up your Sim and be ready to go in a non-movement area and then fire up Vatsim. The controller for that sector can issue you instructions via keyboard or voice depending on your set up/preferences. Sounds like the downside to Vatsim is that it's all pretty much volunteer on the ATC and pilot sides, so you may get plenty of novice users tying up the airwaves (just like real life!).

I've used vatsim before years ago,. Admittedly not recently. It is free, but that's really the only upside unless you really want a controller somewhere near you and you're flying in the eastern US.

Yeah the 2080ti deal just came up locally and I don't think I can fit aything in the 3-series in my desktop due to length restrictions. Not to mention and cooling needs. This one coming with a newer 750W power supply just seemed like a solid deal. My case isn't too compact so hopefully the 2080 has enough fan capacity to avoid overheating, but it shouldn't be taxed too much in my typical home use.

I guess I wrote that ambiguously. I meant to say Vatsim is a computer game to simulate being an air traffic controller where the traffic consists of other people playing a flight simulator. The resulting quality of controllers probably runs the same range from good to bad to ugly as the simulator pilots of the world.

Maybe I should dig up my ancient Vatsim account and give it another try. I think that simulating ATC is more interesting to me as a RL pilot than simulating GA flight. Although I don’t even have time to fire up DCS or iRacing for a practice lap around the boat or track, so installing yet another sim to collect dust is probably a bad idea.

True statement - except the majority of the controllers within that range are actually quite good. It's the virtual sim pilots that crack me up. Recently, there have been a ton of new folks who probably picked up MSFS and have given VATSIM a go without understanding procedures. And you really do need to understand things like - how to file a flight plan, request a clearance, call for taxi (lol pushback too sometimes), get takeoff clearance, fly the SID, hold at times, fly a STAR, etc.... all while switching frequencies as you get passed off. All that is pretty realistic and people who don't take the time to learn the procedures... well it's funny to listen to on the (virtual) radio, but I can see how the poor folks trying to juggle 50 aircraft covering top-down from center all the way to some untowered field where some guy is trying to get a clearance to fly in a (virtual) 172 while the controller is handling (virual) 738s, A320s, etc.... Yeah those VATSIM guys are actually really good, now that I think about it.

Lol, luckily for me I don't know how to do most ANY of that stuff, so I'll file VFR and stay out of their hair!

I got MSFS basic for $1 with my "new to me" Xbox S. Having played it 2 years ago when it came out, and then again this last week, it still sucks as a simulator. How much longer till X-plane 12 deploys?

As an X-Plane fan, I poo-poo'ed MSFS at first, too. I have to say, the addition of some pretty amazing aircraft from PMDG and Fenix as well as getting my VR settings dialed in, it has become my go-to sim.

What is it that you dislike about it in its current state compared to XP11?

Who actually wants to get home from their job and dedicate time to Toy ATC Funtime?

Better than TV or youtoob? Dunno. It's relaxing for some reason.

While MSFS is getting better at simulating systems in their aircraft, the flight models (physics) is still terrible. The floating toolbar is annoying. The co-pilot AI is annoying. All of the "gamers" are annoying, although seeing all of the traffic is pretty nice.

The bottom line is that the plane does not fly like a plane. Far Cry 5 did a better job with aircraft physics than MSFS.

Or coming on POA and poking fun at other people's idea entertainment.

I know. Rusty thinks I'm a dork :( I don't care. I'm still jelly of his Lance and all the stuff it can carry :D

The stock aircraft are a complete joke. They are like toys. Don't even try them - they are terrible. Some of the newer payware stuff from Fenix and PMDG is pretty amazing, though. And I do enjoy the JustFlight Arrow... although the way it flies at low airspeeds and in ground effect is a bit unrealistic. I don't use it on MS' online system - too many gamers who have no clue. Don't ever use the AI stuff like AI ATC or the copilot. Only online stuff I'll do is VATSIM... great Rusty's gonna make fun of me again.... :( And probably post a pic of that Lance with those massive doors open with all the stuff packed in there and dammit now I'm just getting all jealous again.. :(

Not that it excuses Microsoft of anything, but don't most flight simmers with XP and MSFS use 3rd party add-on aircraft to enhance the realism? I guess the co-pilot AI would be a detriment if you were flying the big iron aircraft, I never really gave it much thought. I tend to just fly the smaller GA birds where the co-pilot AI would just be in charge of handing out snacks, lol. I'll have to see about the "gamer" issue, but I doubt I'd play MSFS online outside of VatSim/PilotEdge, personally. I don't think I'd be happy with a bunch of gamers shouting out "Leeeroy Jennnkins!" while running a Kamikaze mission at HNL.

I have MSFS since early beta, and I love it . Folks who complain about sensitivity or flight model usually fall short of computer technical knowledge on how to adjust sensitivity their flying stick or properly configure a hardware.

I personally use honeycomb bravo throttles and thrust master airbus stick. I do have gone but it take too much space since I share my PC with working activities. So I use yoke once in a while.

MSFS is dynamically improving since initial launch, and there many things yet to come. There are plenty of mods that tweak flight model closer to reality .

There are many 3rd party airplanes that bring complete different level into MSFS. My personal favorite MilViz C-310, Leonardo MD-82 and Just Flight BAE-146.

great first post. Welcome to POA. Where do you fly out of?

great first post. Welcome to POA. Where do you fly out of?

Thank you! I've been on this forum long time ago, but forgot my credential so I had to reinitiate the whole thing again LOL
I've been a simmer for 30+years. Got my private in 2003. Now I'm CFI I and own 172P (used to own 182F as well) but still love to ultimate freedom of flying anything you want in sims LOL
P.S. I'm flying out of CRQ

Got the 2080ti and new power supply in. Upgraded the RAM as well just since I was in there. The video card is comically large in my Dell case! I actually had to massage the case out a bit and trim a support gusset in order to squeeze it in, lol. If I were running MSFS or other graphics-intensive games on a daily/weekly basis I'd be concerned with heat output, but it's fairly open above and below the video card, just zero clearance on the ends. As long as the top case fans and PSU fan can pull out the heat for short periods it should be fine I'd think.

Rusty is REALLY going to think I'm a big dork now, but I'll say this - there's nothing wrong with getting BOTH X-Plane and MSFS. I have both. Have been using MSFS more recently because I love the overall immersion that sim provides in VR. But I still do fire up X-Plane from time-to-time. And yes, I go on VATSIM. And yes, I'm a big dork because I like flight simulators. It keeps me off the streets. I don't care what you all think :rofl::rofl:

In FSX you could file IFR flight plans and be put in the ATC system. Additionally there were maps and so forth to help plan the flight and execute it. None of that infrastructure exists in MSflight without 3rd party add-ons.
You can do the same in MSFS. You can select departure and destination, SID/STARS/ approach and ATC will follow exactly as planned. In fact, MSFS ATC came directly from FSX legacy code and highly have been criticized as one aspect of the game that has not been rewritten or improved since FSX . However, Asobo already aware of that and it's on their bucket list of improving.

Those folks who struggle with default there are plenty of free mods. Check out flightsim.to
