Top Gun 2

Saw it a second time. My earlier question about them having their flight helmets with them at a specific time..yep in the scene right before they are clipped on their side. So no faux paux there after all.

Saw it Saturday night, literally, at the local IMax theater. I liked it a lot. Felt a lot like Rocky Meets Top Gun.

Also, the plot was a lot better than I expected.

Did anyone catch that in the first scene at the bar, David Bowie was playing in the background, and she was in Labyrinth with...David Bowie?

I think the first Top Gun might be one of the biggest blockbuster turds of all time. The second one I was OK with it up until the last half hour. Then it went full reTURD.

Edit: Fixed as per the suggestion of @wanttaja

Predicable plot, unrealistic and too much CGI sums it up. Good in cockpit footage though.

FTFY.

Labyrinth?

never heard of it.

yeah, I did google it... and the film is definitely not one that would waste any time watching. It's probably better than Dune, but that is the lowest possible bar.

I wouldn't expect you to considering it's geared toward an age range that's not yours nor mine. I'm not running out to see a Spongebob movie anytime, ever either.

But none of that was the point, anyway.

Just watched the new Dune movie. I’m not a big sci-fi fan but it was actually pretty good. Never seen the original.

The new one is pretty good. I've streamed it twice, and it definitely grew on me the second time around.

The 1984 version was indeed one of the worst movies ever made.

Do NOT watch the original... your welcome.

I wouldn't make my worst enemy watch it.

too subtle?

I almost ordered it recently because I’m a big 80s movie fan and it’s one of the few I haven’t seen. Then I read the reviews on it. Yeah, not good.

That part that makes me want to vomit is that every ya-hoo on U B A Star Tubie uses that stupid "Danger Zone" soundtrack to his airplane video ... o_O

Dune was the worst movie I've ever seen part of. I think sitting through the whole thing might be damaging.

I think I know the point in the movie you are taking about…. There a point where the movie could have ended perfectly, on a serious/somber note. A perfect way to transition the movie to the rest of the team.

BUT instead, it have to have some silly “plot magic” , and turned into a silly remake of “Behind enemy lines” (which was already a silly movie itself). Ugh.

The generally accepted Worst Movie Ever is Battlefield Earth by L Ron Hubbard and John Travolta.

But on the bright side, it did give rise to the greatest movie review line ever, in the Washington Post: "a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters for a million years could not have written a script this bad."

Clearly you missed Cannonball Run 2 and Natural Born Killers.

I did miss CB run 2. As to Natural Born Killers, that was one screwy movie....but the soundtrack had some good moments. A movie can't be worst if it has some Cowboy Junkies in it.

Re the "million monkey", Bob Newhart did a routine based on the million monkeys theory, along the lines of "what if there were a government program to test this theory? There would have to be a bunch of government employees reading everything they typed. Here's how that would go...".

Bingo

<spoilers, but if you haven't seen it yet, you shouldn't be reading this thread>

I guess it depends on what you wanted out of it. I did a hard eye roll when the Hind blew up, but when they popped over that ridge and we see the F14...I have to admit I loved it. Laughter, tears, big smile. I loved that they didn't take it too seriously. They were aiming for a slightly campy 90's style summer movie, and I think they pulled it off admirably.

Loved they had to get the start cart and air and electric running to start the Tomcat not the standard movie "press the start button"

If it was a Prowler the external power quality would have been so crappy someone would have had to remove the left shoulder panel and jump the E/F connection with a piece of wire to get it to take power. :D APU's are for kids.

You left out “Mars Attacks.”
Ack! Ack!

A lot of the space programs I used over the years used unclassified code names that often had the names of movies. We had a big "Mars Attacks" poster in our development lab....

I took two of my kids to see it yesterday. My wife and youngest were out of town so we had some time ;)...and I kinda wanted to see it again since my seat the first time was so near the front.
Anyway
I played the original on the TV before going because daughter hadn't seen it before.
She agreed with my son 100%...the original was boring, hard to follow, planes were just a bunch of dots and couldn't tell what was going on.
Basically neither were impressed with it AT ALL
They thought the second was much better...boring in the beginning though

Seeing it a second time, I found some of the scenes and dialog in the first bunch of scenes to be ...well...kinda lame and not befitting the budget and backing of the film....but then not at all unlike the original in that regard.
What I really rolled my eyes at.... a lot...was all the cheesy cockiness and adversarial competition among friends...the opening bar scene for example. Again, not at all unlike the original film.
I've not served in the military so I of course can't say for sure...but my gut tells me that at times such as those there might be tons of razzing each other.....but sure seems like it would be much more friendly and fun. Maybe even bad blood between a couple once in a while....but wouldn't there also be a bunch of genuine..."hi, good to see you"

It’s a movie for entertainment. If you want authenticity, see your local US Navy recruiter and sign up.

I thoroughly enjoyed 1 and 2 as entertainment.

Cheers

Only thing i thought was utterly unrealistic was Tom Cruise as a Navy officer riding a motorcycle sans helmet.

On base, for sure. He would also be wearing a reflective safety vest and probably a couple extra reflective belts, and carrying his graduation card from the base motorcycle safety course. May God help you if you exceed the speed limit by 5 mph.

Off base ... well, if a tree falls in the forest ...

That, and a guy who can afford to care and feed a P51 riding a Kawasaki from the 80s. The H2 he rode later on was a little more up to speed.
