My wife has been wanting to do this artist/crafter retreat in Italy for a number of years now, and I've been pretty resistant to it for a number of reasons ... my knees just don't hold up well to long hours as self-loading cargo in aluminum mailing tubes, not many fond memories of Italy from my 1979 Med cruise complements of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club, blah blah blah, whine whine whine ...

But anyway, the other day it hit me "I remember an AOPA article or something about Lake Como Flying Club and seaplane ratings" (and we may have discussed it here as well). So, I may just bring up the artist tour with my wife again ... perhaps score some brownie points by going, and actually come up with some fun daytime activities while she does her painting/crafting stuff.

Quite a bit of cool seaplane flying over there.

While you're at it get "sea plane operations"

It's written by a Italian guy, quite a few photos of float flying over there, and it's also about the ultimate book on float flying.

Now this looks fun

I just noticed the 206 on their home page is the same 206 on the cover of the book I just recommended :goofy:

Como is a PITA to get to if that's not where the retreat is.

But there are several REALLY nice places for such a thing around there.

I once spent two weeks at the Villa Monastero up the lake in Varenna. Highly recommended.

But don't restrict yourself to seaplanes. The Alps are not far away.

Lake Como is a wonderful place. Access depends on where you're staying - Como has better road access than Bellagio, for example, but I prefer Bellagio.

Not sure of the flying club - one of my trips I connected with the owner of a Commander aircraft based at Linate & flew up and over Lake Como, over to Switzerland, then back. Expensive flying over there, we were will over $100 before we even started the prop....

Do it. It is super pretty. Never flown there but jumped not too far away. Would go back in a second even as a ground bound tourist, not many places I feel that way about.

This^^^^^^

Go.

Lake Como is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

I have this print hanging in the house. It reminds me of a very pleasant visit to Bellagio.

If you visit Italy, have a beer for dad (RIP) where he finally got an annoying Chief off his back when he caught the Chief ****ing on some Italian's car while drunk.

He promised to let the Chief sleep it off and not report it, and the Chief found someone else to bark at for the rest of the cruise.

That's all I've got on Italy. Since your dearest loved one wants to go, I'll assume you will. Send pictures. ;)

In Italy, GA is in the dark ages.
Don't expect a reply to an email, unless you send it in Italian. And even then, don't expect it :)

Something I'll have to look at next year when I have meetings in Stresa on Lake Maggiore. :D

I know this is a very old thread, but I figured it was the best place to add this information. I contacted their secretary via email and they will only allow a half our flight. That takes you from Como to Bellagio and back at €280 for 2 people and €560 for 4 people. Any flights longer than 0.5 required a “membership” which isn’t on their website. It seems like Italian runaround.
