If you don’t ask, the answer will always be ‘no’, so here goes:

my Cherokee 140 has a KLN94 installed, works great, but was installed for VFR only, due to not having the required annunciators and CDI. A fortuitous circumstance has allowed me to obtain an MD40-232L CDI/annunciator, and since I’m able to do the wiring and install myself, I’m going to see about getting a field approval for my light IFR needs. (Yes, it’s old, could be considered a waste, but it’s equipment I have, and is still updated)

The missing piece is the AFM supplement that is required. Does anyone happen to have a KLN94 AFM supplement that I can use as a template to create one for my Cherokee?

I'll check my book when I get home. Don't diss the KLN, it is a really nice piece of kit. Mine runs my autopilot and does approaches just fine. But you're going to need a way to update monthly for it to be useful for IFR.

I have an IFR one in my DA 40. The AFM supplement is in the airplane. I'll bring it home and scan it next time I fly.

Thanks steingar and NavAir! Hopefully between the two, I can come up with something I can put together that will be acceptable to the FAA...

FYI: if you haven't done so far, may want to have a little chat with your local ASI on the AFM approval process. On the last 2 field approvals I was involved in that required a supplement, the local FSDOs were all in to approve the install and ICAs but drew the line at the FM supplement. We ended up using a DER who could approve FM supplement data to finish the field approval on one 337. Seems supplements are a stretch for some ASIs to sign off on due to the operational side of the equation.

I'll be having a conversation with someone from the local FSDO in the next couple of days. My hope is that with a few examples of approved AFM Supplements, they will be good with one of them.

There are a couple guidance docs (Order & AC) that get into more detail on this topic but you may want to put together a data package for this alteration and include a clean sheet AFM supplement example. You can base it off existing approved examples but having your version readily available vs copies of someone else’s doc will work to your favor. That same guidance touches on this as well.

Look through AC 43.210A and search for an FAA Order under “major alteration approval” policy. I’d study both before your FSDO visit and plan accordingly. The more you present to the ASI (i.e., a completed 337, AFM supplement, data package, etc.) the better chance you have at keeping the approvals local vs going to the ACO. Who knows, if you have all your Ts crossed and Is dotted he might just sign block 3 at that time??? If you can’t find the Order I can look for it later.

When you say that you are able to do the wiring and install yourself, and will pursue the field approval with the FSDO, I sort of assume you are an A&P/IA, but are you?

I helped a European associate get a draft of an updated AFMS for the KN94 that was previously only VFR approved. There is a draft of an AFMS in the install manual from Bendix-King. You can find the install manual with google. The field approval is accomplished with providing an edited AFMS to a FSDO Inspector along with a 337. Once the inspector approves the document (I ask them to sign the cover page and initial the other pages), you will still need to get an AI to sign off the 337 and make a logbook entry.

I'm working under the supervision of an A&P/IA, as a part time apprentice. Working towards my A&P, but it's going to take a long time.

Realized I hadn't updated this thread. Worked with the local FSDO, and after a few back and forths, the paperwork was all squared up, signed off, and the field approval completed. Test flight went well, and now the KLN94 is IFR certified in my aircraft.
