I love a good burger, but only so often. And since I started flying, my son "makes" me take him to Stephenville for Hard 8 BBQ at least once a month.

What I'm really craving, and don't have enough of here in Abilene, is some good Chinese food. We have flown to Lubbock and hit up PF Changs...but I'm wondering if any of you have an good suggestions in Texas or OK for good Chinese food.

I have yet to hit KSJT (San Angelo) for the Chinese place on the field...partly because my CFI always gave it as an option for "really bad Chinese food" (I'm withholding judgment on that until I can try it for myself, which I will soon).

What say you? Any good destinations for egg rolls, General Tso's chicken, pepper steak, etc???

I got what you need, buy you're going to have to come to California. Peter Chu's Skyroom upstairs in the terminal at the Redding airport (KRDD). This ain't no Panda Express either. White table-cloth kind of place. 4.7 stars on Yelp.

Thai Pepper in Lubbock. Best Thai I have ever had. I fly up from Houston on a semi regular basis to eat at Thai Pepper. Check their hours before flying up though.

Since you're a foodie, it seems, what else is good in Abilene besides Miguel's Mex Tex?

Thanks for the input so far. It sounds like I need to make a trip back to Lubbock, Odessa, California, and all of the east coast. Gonna get some good cross country hours in!

Then I need to figure out where Steinholme is.

I’ve never been called that before, but the more I ponder, I think it fits.

In Abilene:

Copper Creek for a really good, local steakhouse (owned by a fellow 182 pilot). The Beehive is also a nice steakhouse (but I prefer the original in Albany 40 miles to the Northeast).

For Mexican, most people prefer Abuelos (semi-local), and Miguel’s that you mentioned. There are a lot of good hole in the wall places too (like La Popular for a great carne guisada breakfast burrito…I would fly here for it). If you like street tacos, The Local downtown is a pretty good.

For pizza, Vagabond downtown is a good wood fired place with a cool vibe and owned by great people.

For barbecue, The Shed on Buffalo Gap Road is great, but only open for lunch.

My personal favorite is in Buffalo Gap 10 miles south of town at Perini Ranch Steakhouse. It is not a fancy steakhouse, but more of a ranch atmosphere with excellent steaks and down-home sides (ranch salad, green beans, jalapeño poppers, potatoes, etc). Get desert too…it’s all good, but the bread pudding, jalapeño cheesecake and strawberry shortcake are off the charts.

RE Perini Ranch Steakhouse, unless you are going at an off time, you’ll want a reservation.
