New iPad Mini just announced.

Or go to many of the used electronic places like decluttr.com.
I’m sure they’ll have plenty as people upgrade.
Are these available now, I thought there was a chip shortage?
I guess Apple gets what Apple wants.

I'm tempted to trade-in the 5 ($225) for the new 6 and keep my 4. The 5 is only used for flying, but the 4 has everything I use on a daily basis.

I have a similar situation, a 4 and a 5. The 5 is just for flying. The 4 is a spare for the copilot and daily surfer, but is only 32 gb, so it no longer has the memory to update FF. I would keep the 4 if it had more memory.

Yes, I find it curious. Apple can get chips, but not the automakers..?

As far as the charging I see no real difference using my "old time" USB cable that I used to charge my iPhone 6 when charging my iPhone 12. The 12 doesn't have a headphone jack as it's all Bluetooth now and that is a bit of an annoyance to me ...

It's not all bluetooth. You can use the lightning cable to 3.5 jack adapter that comes with it. Clunky, sure.

The automakers assumed their demand would tank with Covid, so they cut back on their orders. The chipmakers booked orders for companies like Apple who correctly forecasted demand. People ordered cars, and outstripped the automakers forecast. The chipmakers were fully booked, so no chips for cars.

Can you imagine a world where there was a "universal serial bus". Instead of a company that makes a proprietary cable just to milk people.
I have 5 different USB cables for various devices. There are probably more that I don’t know about.

I believe Apple makes a lot (most?) of their own chips.

Apple designs a lot of their own CPUs. They still farm out the fabrication to the usual players in the market.

And I can't upgrade to the new mini unfortunately because it won't fit in my xnaut cooling case. I guess I could always pre-order their new case.....hmmm.

I'm just happy to see Apple acknowledging the aviation market and demand for the mini. There was a time when we were all worried that they'd orphan the mini. Maybe they'll consider hardware that is brighter in sunlight and less prone to overheating.

Yes, please!!!

I can’t specifically recall, but I think they mentioned a brighter display.

Here are the specs:
  • Liquid Retina display
  • 8.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
  • 2266-by-1488 resolution at 326 pixels per inch (ppi)
  • Wide color display (P3)
  • True Tone display
  • Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating
  • Fully laminated display
  • Antireflective coating
  • 1.8% reflectivity
  • 500 nits brightness

Dammit. I forgot about that trade-in program.... looks like I can get $250 for my non-cellular air 3.... I mean, it's almost a bargain to get the mini at this point...
That's like less than a tank of 100LL after adjusting for trade-in value? Send it!

Ah!!! That is pretty much EXACTLY the price of 48 gallons of gas at the current price...

All I need now is for someone to tell me the exact RAM mount that will fit this thing and maybe a nice case to go with it....

Full send

I use the X Ram mount, which holds any iPad mini.

My 4 only has 64GB but holds FF and WingX without any problems. The 5, on the other hand, is 256 GB. I think I'll stick with the 64GB on the 6 because I'll be getting rid of WingX and going to Garmin Pilot with the installation of the 175. I haven't downloaded the Pilot data, just the app, so I don't know if 64 GB will handle both FF and Pilot. Anyone here have both and how much memory is needed?

I don't know, but obviously deelee is gonna need a bigger mount if he goes with more memory. I mean 256gb is 4x the amount of memory than 64gb so you might wanna get a ram mount that's 4 times bigger. and probably 4x more 'spensive.

Hmmmm good point. The iPad Air I have now is 64GB and it is big enough... I mean... if I get the 256GB model, just think of the w/b implications. I don't want to get all forward GG and stuff just because of all that extra GBs....

Well that pretty much seals it.

Also cool was at the announcement they showcased it running Foreflight!

And not just in a sub-second camera shot which has happened before, but a nice helicopter shot with CEO Tim Cook saying "...like when it's secured to the leg of a pilot in flight..." (about the Mini) AND a specific mention of ForeFlight by the iPad Product Manager:

Hmm. It looks like the board replaced my YouTube link that had the time in the URL to an embedded video. The mention of aviation by Tim Cook is right away at the beginning of the iPad Mini chapter (3rd one), the ForeFlight mention is at 14:20.

Any word on overall size? Will new gadgets be needed? Like yoke mounts and stuff like that?

Same width. Slightly shorter (roughly 0.3") height. One hundredth of an inch thicker... But with squared-off corners on the front and rear surfaces unlike the curve present on the back of the previous minis.

I'm going to see if the squarishness prevents it from fitting in my old RAM mini holder... I'll report back.

Can you imagine a world where there was a "universal serial bus". Instead of a company that makes a proprietary cable just to milk people.

Just to milk people? Meh. Apple wanted a small, *reversible* connector. USB-C wasn't out yet when they developed Lightning, and USB mini and micro connectors aren't reversible.

Now that USB has caught up, they're slowly moving from Lightning to USB-C.

This. Apple's refurb program is a great way to buy things. There's a small but significant discount, and Apple replaces the screen and outer casing of everything in the refurb store. It comes with a full warranty.

But... The Mini 5s are already gone, and since they're not selling new ones any more they are highly unlikely to return.

You guys who watch this... is there any chance of there being any discount on these things before Christmas?

Only if they manage to get some in the aforementioned refurb store by then. Probably not, though. I would expect January or February they'll start to have some available there.

I would go with the 256 if you're going to have two EFB apps. It's not a bad idea anyway - I've found that the useful life of electronics like this is extended when you buy lots of memory and storage at purchase.

I guess Apple gets what Apple wants.

Yes, I find it curious. Apple can get chips, but not the automakers..?

Apple does get what Apple wants, because they funded TSMC's upgrade to a 5-nanometer production process, and purchased a lot of their production capacity in advance.

So, Apple is really not suffering from the chip shortage at all, except where they're using legacy chips for secondary purposes... And there's a lot less of that going on these days since nearly all their products are using a system-on-chip architecture with (relatively speaking) very little in the way of additional components on the boards.

Also, Apple CEO Tim Cook, long before he was CEO, was already known as one of the very best supply chain managers in the world. Since they've got the clout and money that come with being the world's largest company in addition to a CEO who has that kind of skill with the supply chain, they're probably better off than pretty much anyone else when it comes to being able to get products into customers' hands.

As such - My iPad Mini 6 is due to arrive on my doorstep next Friday, the first day of availability.

My Garmin Pilot takes up about 5 gigs but I don't download the entire country at once. I do have all of the Midwest and some of the mountain West on it. I also only download the 10 arc terrain (or whatever it's called) instead of the bigger 5 arc.

My Mini 2 is really getting laggy and is totally out of space. Time for an upgrade!

Holy cow, I exceeded mini 2 capabilities years ago, then the mini 4 about a year ago…I now use iPhone 12 max as a mini mini and my iPad pro as a mostly planning tool.
Garmin Pilot and I assume FF, overlays (wx, notams, traffic) and dynamic maps would bring it to its knees.

When you get it, Please give us a report of how well the screen works in direct daylight. I’m worried that it’s “only 500 nits”, but the anti-reflective should help.

awesome! If you have any intel on which case(s) work well with it and also any intel on RAM cradles/grips that work with it... that would be very helpful!

Holy cow, how much memory does Foreflight consume? My Garmin Pilot uses 3.65gb.

Then they’ll crank up the prices to match certified avionics. They’re almost there, now, with phone prices.

I should have upgraded long ago but it has been manageable. It is now getting to the point where it’s not reliable enough to depend on in the air as my moving map.

It looks like a nice little step up, if I had a 4 I'd definitely jump but my 5 really isn't lacking in any way and I don't really see the point in trading up every year just to be current.

This is the expandable RAM mount I use for my mini 2. Don't see why it wont work for any of the mini's
