The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
My dog occasionally escapes the yard and goes on an adventure.

As you can imagine, it causes worry and stress not knowing where she went or where to begin looking forward her.

I am considering one of the GPS collars that connect to an app in my phone that alert when she crosses the geo fence and then provides an area where to look.

Any one in PoA using such a product and can provide info?

I have not used them but a friend of mine has tried them all. He said they are definitely an example of “you get what you pay for” and told me what brand to get but can’t remember. I will ask him this afternoon. He said the cheaper ones have range issues or remotes and collars quit working

We had a Whistle. It pretty much sucked. False alarms all the time. Worse, when we'd take the dogs on walks, there'd be like a 15-minute delay and then the location would be way off. At their behest I upgraded my internet, moved my wifi routers around, nothing helped. So they suggested I upgrade to their newer version.

So my suggestion would be to use a brand other than Whistle.

So I talked to him and flooded me with info and depends on several factors. Do you have good cell service? Who’s the carrier? What kind of range would you need? Do you want a monthly/ yearly subscription? Will you use it hunting? If your cell service is weak you will be better off with GPS. Battery life varies from hours to several days depending on setup. He is currently using a Garmin setup right now

I'd suggest fixing the fence. There are too many cars and asinine people to let the dog roam.

I used the whistle collar. Cell phone based, doge goes outside the home area you get a text message. Worked ok, not great resolution 30-50 yards. You know which way they went. If you have a dog that won’t come they can slink away. My dog would come so that wasn’t an issue. Had it on a lab that was very active and got wet a lot. Didn’t hold up well. Didn’t really need it so I didn’t replace it.
Garmin makes a radio based unit that works well, I don’t know how well it would work 27/7, it’s meant for use in the field and is pricey.

I’ve been using one of these for over a year. It’s got it’s problems, but it mostly works. I recommend.

.

That is a very nice dog ... I wouldn't want to lose him either.

Irrelevant trivia:
Animal trackers have been around for years .... long before GPS or cell phones .... a simple transmitter on the collar and a directional antenna for the tracker .... point the antenna toward the strongest signal and go ... I flew helicopters for the scientists who were following Caribou herds in the north .... what amazed me was how many years the batteries would last .... that was in an era where flashlight batteries lasted a month if you were lucky ... and portable radios needed new batteries every couple months.

So basically the animal was the NDB. Maybe @AggieMike88 can instead pick up an ADF that someone pulled out out of their plane.

I've never seen a Whistle ad on Facebook before today. Is POA selling our data to them? If not, this is an absurd coincidence.

Just attach a Google tablet running facebook to her, they will track her to the nearest foot. Just make sure location services are turned on! :p
