I work as a contractor (Organ Perfusionist/ First Assist/ Back Table) for an organ transplant team. I have the ability to rent out my airplanes to the hospital for our organ transports.

If I wanted to pursue this opportunity, what's yalls advice on getting this started? How would I go about doing this? Do I need to create my own business?

If they’re “your” contract pilots, you’ll need a charter certificate.

Unless you lease the airplane to your boss and they have operational control of the aircraft you will most likely have to get a 135 certificate.

Who will have Operational Control of the aircraft? This will determine what path you as owner are required to take.
Operational control, with respect to a flight, means the exercise of authority over initiating, conducting or terminating a flight.

My ideal situation is to have the hospital use the aircraft whenever needed but also I could have the ability to still fly the aircraft for personal use too.

Also, would it just be a better idea to go into a fractional ownership with the hospital?

Whose airplanes are they using now? When you say "our" do you mean the team's? The hospital's?

My family’s aircrafts

I’m confused. In the OP it states you have the ability to rent your aircraft to the hospital, then go on to later state the hospital is already using your family’s planes. Why not ask the family member who is already doing this how it is they are doing it?

In the OP I stated that I’m interested in renting the aircraft out the hospital on a “as needed basis”, I want to know how/what I need to have in order to do so.

They are my family planes. The hospital is not using my plane but I would like them too. I just need to know if I need to have some sort of qualification or if I need to be certified as a charter service.

Let the chopped liver and kidney jokes begin

Liver and onions = good.

And if that guy got in trouble for delivering free pizza to those poor islanders, I'm sure there are many ways to run afoul of the FAA when renting aeroplanes to a hospital to transport live organs.

Well ... things don't always go as planed but it worked out well:

It's definitely doable. Know of several aircraft that work 135 part-time commercial use and 91 part-time personal use. The FAA link above covers it I believe. But since it would appear you will be playing on both sides of the fence with this one, I would recommend buying a few hours with an aviation attorney and get the details worked out to include the mx side. You might also want to discuss the insurance side considering your potential involvement in both uses.

Thank you. I appreciate that!

Time to post the video of the doc tripping and dropping the heart again...
Had a doctor do that 3 weeks ago or so. Dropped cooler getting it out of plane, heart and ice goes flying out onto the ramp. Moment of stunned silence followed by the transplant team scooping the heart and what ice they could back into the cooler. Got some extra ice from the fbo to dump in their cooler. Wonder if recipient got the scratch and dent discount.

And that’s why we do 3 barriers for packaging lol..

No one has mentioned yet that starting an aviation business indicates a likely need for a brain transplant. LOL
