I have 3rd class SI and no issue renewing every year. My SI goes until 2025. I was thinking bout is it worth the time and money to maintain this SI for another 4 years or should i go BasicMed. I don't want to be airline pilots, but I'm getting my CFI and like to teach. here are the two simple questions:
1) can i be a CFI with BasicMed and get compensated?
2) How difficult is to go from BaiscMed to 3rd or 2nd class?

see i told you it's simple questions:
1) Yes or No
2) Easy---somewhat difficult--- very difficult----Impossible.

thank you and be safe.

1) No. <<<<I am wrong See post below with FAA reference...
2) You can't without passing a 3rd class or 2nd class medical exam.

1) Yes, you can be compensated for teaching as a CFI under BasicMed, as long as the aircraft and the operation are within the limitations for BasicMed.*
2) It depends. But your previous BasicMed status is irrelevant to your ability to get a Class 3 or 2.

* You are being "paid to teach", not "paid to fly", so a CFI does not need a 2nd class to instruct. You only need whatever you would need to serve as PIC. And if you're not going to serve as PIC (for instance, if the student is already rated, and serving as PIC), you don't even need that.

Regarding #1, it's yes. See the July/August 2017 FAA Safety Briefing:

Flight instructors take note: The FAA considers the compensation flight instructors receive to be for teaching, not piloting the aircraft. As such, flight instructors may receive compensation for instructing while operating under BasicMed.

I just learned something!

I'm going to start a PSA campaign telling people to stop using "as such."

There is a new wrinkle that has the potential to affect #1. An email from EAA just went out describing the letter EAA, AOPA, and GAMA sent to the FAA regarding a court decision where the judge stated "that a flight instructor who receives compensation for flight instruction is carrying persons for compensation or hire."

"The letter noted that the April 3 judgment issued by the D.C. Court of Appeals in the Warbird Adventures, Inc., et al vs. Federal Aviation Administration case 'has created significant confusion and concern in the aviation community regarding the impact of the decision on compensated flight training.'"

I'm going to start a different thread on this issue. I just downloaded the judgements.
