B36 - those were the days

I watched Strategic Air Command this past weekend... couldn't fly so was looking for an aviation movie I hadn't seen before.

It was surprisingly good. The melodrama between Jimmy Stewart and his wife was a little much, but that was the style back then, I guess. The aircraft footage and even the shots of the air bases, old cars.... love that stuff. Worth a watch, for sure.

After spending over a decade hating prop de-ice systems (the least reliable system on every aircraft I operated), that looks like a maintenance insanity. Immensely cool, but insane. :)

I seem to recall PM planned some type of rube goldberg engine exhaust heat deice/anti ice system for the Raptor. Can't find it now as the website is "under construction" but there was a whole section on it up there before

I think the Beech Starship also used the turbine exhaust as a defacto anti-ice

More or less. The Starship and the Piaggio Avanti don't need a specific prop heat de/anti-ice system because the exhaust going over the props keeps the ice off.

True, to a point. I like complex things but I don't like unreliable things. :)
 
We were just down at Pima Air & Space last month. That B-36 is great, and just part of the line up of old hardware. A great museum. There is one building with only one airplane in it - a B-17G. The building is based on the 390th BG(H), but they have a room dedicated to another group in the same wing, the 95th BG(H). My uncle was a copilot in that group at the end of the war in Europe and I found him in their interactive display. The third group in that wing was the 100th BG(H), but other than the picture showing all three groups that was the total for the 100th. You can spend the better part of a day at the Pima Air & Space Museum without even trying.
