Garmin 175/GI 106B CDI Install

Hello All,

Looking to update the panel in my '68 Cardinal to pursue my IR and beyond. Aircraft Spruce has a sale on the Garmin 175 (waas) /GI 106B CDI (vor, loc, GPS, glideslope). From my research, this is the most affordable/practical package for my mission. Have a KX-155 installed already, paired with a VOR.

Would love your thoughts. From my understanding, I could shoot any type of approach using the 175 and CDI? Please correct me if I'm mistaken. Any estimates on installation?

To your question, I agree with your strategy.
I installed the GNC-355 (for the comm to replace 1840's technology) and am very happy with its capability GPS-wise. The comm OTOH came with a few issues that (hopefully) have been dealt with after a warranty replacement. Still though, I am using it for IR training and find it quite capable.
I'm even learning about what I'll want when I upgrade to something less 'training-oriented.'

Your 175 would only give you Gps/RNAV approaches. If your KX155 has glideslope, then that would cover the missing approaches.

Well, you couldn't shoot an NDB approach without an ADF. And you'd have to shoot a VOR/LOC/LDA/SDF approach with the KX-155. And the KX-155 would need a glide slope receiver in order to shoot an ILS approach.

BTW, how much extra would it be to go with a GI275 instead of a GI106? The GI275 would add moving map, traffic and weather display capability.

The new generation Garmin products have a product that is right. Which one to choose is determined by whatv3lse is in the panel. If your panel already has good coms and a Nav, the 175 is a great choice. If it also needs a com, then I think it’s the 355 that would fill the gap and if it also needs ADS-B, then it’s the 375.

great combo, i installed a garmin 175 in mine with a used garmin cdi for dedicated gps cdi. I already had a cdi for ils and a vor. You can't go wrong with a 175 imo, i'm very happy with mine, the interface is super user friendly for ifr or vfr flying. the only thing i wished was i had got the one with a comm, as my older one bit the dust 6 months after, then picked up a garmin 225

Don't feel too bad. The price difference between a GPS175 and a GNC355 is about the same as a GTR225. Plus, the GPS175 knob is a little bit more useful than a GNC355 knob since it doesn't have to be responsible for changing frequencies. And you gain a couple of data fields on the display since it doesn't have to show frequencies.

It's not my money - but look at the 375 vs. 175.

Installation should be similar.
