Firefly

Sounds like the Browncoats have a new recruit.

"Ain't all buttons and charts, little albatross. Know what the first rule of flying is? Well I s'pose you do, since you already know what I'm 'bout to say."

"I do. But I like to hear you say it."

"Love. Can know all the math in the 'verse but take a boat in the air that you don't love? She'll shake you off just as sure as a turn in the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down...tell you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens...makes her a home."

One of the best shows all time!

There was also "Serenity," aka, "Firefly, the Movie."

I was majorly in love with Kaylee (the ship's mechanic), and Inara (the high-class "working woman").
And nobody messes with River.

Another production by the Joss Whedon Repertory Company.

Had a regular Mary Ann/ Ginger thing going on there, didn't he. Kaylee was my favorite, but Zoe certainly has her assets.

That’s my preferred way to handle any hostage situation.

With Firefly a whole generation of nerds and geeks fell in love with Nathan Fillion, myself included!

A bit off topic, but The Expanse is quite a ride, with one season to go.

The books are fantastic, highly recommend the entire series (although it's quite a commitment at 8 books so far with ~450 pages each). I'm afraid to watch the show and have it ruin my image of the Expanse universe!

Had to Google that one. Looks somewhat amusing but sci fi isn't my thing.

So when it came out iirc they aired the eposodes out of order. Fox seems to kill shows early.
Fox was concerned the two-hour pilot was too talky, and didn't have enough action to keep folks watching. So they aired the second episode ("Train Heist") first.

My favorite "Firefly" tribute comes in the Simpson's "Treehouse of Horror" episodes. The credits are all modified, "horror" versions of the persons names... "Bat Groening," "Island of Lost Selmans," etc. Then there's "Don 'Reavers!' Payne"....

Add another vote for "The Expanse." I especially love the technical accuracy of the show, especially how they simulate the effects of microgravity. It's not perfect, but within technical and budget limitations, it's probably the best that could be done short of filming the episodes on the Vomit Comet.

It also obeyed light speed limitations. Most everything happens within our solar system, and they do pay attention to communication lags. And every space show needs a “Jayne”.

Run this forward to 1:10 for the song itself...

I missed Firefly too. What service is it on? Don’t see it on Netflix.

+1 for Dark Matter. Wish it would have gone to its conclusion. Some of the plot lines are pretty contrived, but excellent premise and character development/evolution.

Also recommend Ascension, a SyFy mini-series a few years ago. Hokey dialog, but another excellent premise.

I always liked River, when she went bonkers.

A little known and definitely oddball sci fi series was Lexx. It's available on IMDB TV and Pluto TV.

"A group of disparate fugitives from an interplanetary tyranny find themselves in control of a massively powerful starship."

The motto of the series was "Ready for some strange?"

Lexx seemed to me to be targeted directly at teenage boys.

Firefly was very different. I've never seen another Sci-Fi show with such a strong appeal to woman as Firefly. I think it's Firefly's characters, character development and interactions. Firefly is much more than just Sci-Fi (and a western). It's not about the tech. It's not about space travel.

I think that's a good summary. It was a really excellent show, in part because it had such a broad appeal and was so different from so much else out ther. Great character development and interaction.

I agree with this for sure. My wife loved (loves) Firefly. Any time friends start talking about sci-fi series (Expanse, Dark Matter) she will not shut up until everyone agrees that Firefly was the best sci-fi show ever made and what a travesty it was that it ran only one season and how it's more than just sci-fi how about the plot and storylines and excellent character development and.... omg. Don't get her started.

I like starting debates between Star Trek and Star Wars fans, once on a while I can throw in the Marvel universe.... Sounds like it would be fun to ask your wife which one was the best, listing the aforementioned shows. :)
