Piper PA28 EXPERIENCES HEAVY WAKE TURBULENCE | Emergency Lands at JFK

They all handled that well. Would have been nice of the controller to let the Piper over-fly the threshold at 1900 rather than 3 miles west but I'm sure they had their reasons...

Dang - if I ever have an in flight emergency I hope I handle it as calmly and well as he did.
Some people are born with steel nerves. I’m not sure I’m one of them!

Wow, impressive how cool he stayed under pressure. I’ve never had a real emergency, only two scares. If it were to ever happen, I would hope I could also remain as well collected.

The arm chair quarterback in me is curious why: 1) he didn’t go for 4L?; 2) he set up for such a wide pattern for 13R? 3) he didn’t continue a climb while he had power/was not on fire. My initial thoughts are maybe he needed extra time to set up/brief the evac? Would there be any other reasons?

Not following. He was cleared into the bravo at or below 1500. What did I miss.
Note, I watched the video on my phone and it was impossible to read most of the radar graphics.

13R is the longest runway at JFK. Maybe winds favored that runway? That’s my guess.

Scary. Inflight fire is one of the few times you have no choice but to put it down on the ground at the closest available place. I had friends who had one in a Navion and they managed to escape the cockpit with just enough time to see the plane completely go up.

There are defined routes for VFR traffic around JFK/LGA. It’s a very busy complex airspace. JFK itself during peak periods uses 3 runways. When on the 4’s the primary landing runway is 4R with 4L the secondary. They run the international departures off 4L and the smaller domestic aircraft from 31L at KE intersection with a hard left turn to avoid LGA airspace. He was nicely set up for 13L and with the length of the runway could have turned base at almost anytime. The only real question that needs to be answered was how the battery got loose. I have noted a lot of poorly or improperly secured batteries.

Early on he was cleared below the bravo, halfway thru he was cleared into the bravo at or below 1900 but he was already in the approach corridor. If he was cleared over the threshold of 4R/4L there would have been no impact to the approach and no wake.

Well, I heard 1500 not 1900 hundred, and the video editor posted 1400 in the text translation.
In terms of over flight the airport, not at that level. They were using both13 and 9. makes it pretty much impossible

Yeah watch it later on a pc. He was pretty much flying into the wake when he made that call-back confirming the clearance into bravo at or below 1500. I think when the controller called out that clearance it was his last ditch way of saying "dude, you are flying right under that wake". Prior to that, the controller had pointed out the traffic and issued caution but the Piper proceeded below the 777 path at 400 feet.

The captions on these are frequently incorrect. Either the VASASIM guy knows nothing about aviation or English isn't his native language.
