Precise meaning of “continue downwind”

I’ve been “forgotten about “ a few times. Mostly when given a vector. I also wish they would give you something like. “N1234W turn right 15 degrees. Expect own navigation in 10 minutes”. lol. I’m sure that’s not allowed?

Usually they say "continue downwind, I'll call your base". Slow down and if you start getting beyond the ata, speak up.

One time I was coming into IAD and my downwind got extended quite a way. Of course, I wasn't the only one because some United captain was bitching about him being vectored away from the airport as well. When I finally came into land I observed a different United plane parked in the runup area with a bunch of fire equipment around it. Apparently one of the APUs either caught fire or just overheated and they decided to do a precautionary landing. I think the bitching pilot may have had to eat some crow after that.

Love a pilot that will do it and not turn in too quick or fly 4 miles out before turning base. Its easier just to call their base so it isn't left up to the pilot to decide. I've forgotten ONCE about someone on an extended downwind and it was a Citation 550...once, and that was about 22 years ago.

You actually did it once? I never have

In my experience, the less traffic there is, the more they relax, and then make small mistakes. On a particularly slow day long ago, I called in about 15 nm out to the east of YKA, she gave me the updates, and since nobody else was on the radio cleared me straight in #1. A few minutes later I hear her say ICE can you give me a PIREP from your destination to here. I don't reply, so about 30 seconds later, ICE radio check please. Now I assume that she means me, so I reply, are you trying to reach ICR not ICE. Oh My God sorry ICR, yes I meant you, and this is your home airport and we talk all the time. So I laughed and said no worries Brandy, I wasn't trying to ignore you, just thought you were talking to another plane to far away for me to hear was all. PIREP from Revelstoke to Kamloops, mostly clear, unlimited ceiling, some thick smoke near Sorrento from the hillside on fire there is all. Her laughing, thanks ICR, see you soon cleared to land your discretion. When i switched to ground, she was also who I got, and she apologized again, saying how embarrassed she felt, especially since I flew frequently, and YKA is my home base. When it is busy she never forgets, but likely bored, she let her mind wander, and could not remember my tail number despite being the only one around.

I assume he landed somewhere by now. LOL.

Brandy is a fine girl.

When it doubt, ask. Ask them what they want. Nice to be accommodating whenever you can, but NEVER let them fly your airplane. Your the PIC and the buck stops there.

Can your flight review expire during a flight?

Easily, if you ever fly past midnight on the 31st. Do you have to be current at the start of your flight, or for the whole duration? I think we need an FAA Counsel interpretation on that. Or at least a POA one.
