Looking to start a conversation about pre-owned Extra 300s. Interested in the market and ownership costs.

Thank you.

Not an owner, but I fly/teach in them regularly (600+ hrs Extra time). I'd be glad to help if you have any specific questions. I can also probably put you in touch with the right people if I can't answer myself. Feel free to send me a PM

Thanks - I will.

Try aerobatics mailgroup on google groups (groups.google.com). You'll find lots of Extra owners there...

Old thread, new question. The 330LT that is designed for XC flight, does it truly work well for both aerobatics and XC work?

The LT is mainly built with XC flight in mind, but has aerobatic capability. It is not really designed to be a top performing competition or airshow machine, but capable of the level of aerobatics the majority of people would want to do. In other words, if becoming the next National aerobatic champion is your goal, the LT probably isn't your plane... But, if you want a fun XC machine with good acro capabilities, it might be for you. In terms of aerobatics, I think of it kind of like a high performing Super Decathlon (roll rate is slower than a 300L, etc...) but a very quick XC machine.

Feel free to PM me with more questions.

Thank you Acropilot. I have no delusions of ever performing in air shows or being great, but some basics sure are a lot of fun! I should really be practical and buy something like a Cirrus, but before I get too old, it would be great to buy an Extra, enjoy the heck out of it for several years, then sell it and buy a more practical plane. Just dreaming, but then a part of me says 'why not do it'. It isn't like that would be my last plane ever...but could be a fun way to go for 5 years or so. Appears to have good short field performance also, which is a huge bonus.

The point of a forum is that the answers to questions are often interesting to many other people.....

I have already sent him a PM as well. The angel sitting on 1 shoulder says buy a purpose built 4 seat xc machine...the devil on my other shoulder is telling me to buy an LT, practicality be damned. The way I seem to go through planes, buying and selling an LT isn't a huge deal for me. And in +/- 5 years, those Generation 5 SR22 will be a lot cheaper than now, due to depreciation.

You want one of these.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakovlev_Yak-18T

While I have never heard of either, will look those planes up. Thanks

Oops, good point... Here is my perspective (minus the personal contact details):
In terms of maintenance, they are pretty simple airplanes and not difficult to maintain. In general, they have pretty basic systems, and are quite reliable.

On the flying side, they are pretty easy to fly if you have a good tailwheel background. It's higher performance than what many are used to (faster roll rate, generally lighter on controls, etc...) The LTs are more stable than the purpose built acro machines, which is nice for XC flying. They are pretty comfortable XC machines... it's not a Cirrus or Bonanza obviously, but that isn't its purpose.

Not sure if it applies to all serial number 300’s but the 1000 Hr AD(?) Inspection

is extremely in depth.

Fixtures are required when you remove the Wing , UPWARD.

If you plan to need the Inspection at some point it’s best to assure the shop

had the capability.

You don't have to remove the wing, there are ways to do it with it in place if you have experience with Extras.

New member here. I’m flying an Extra 300L regularly and was wondering if anyone knows of an Extra owner/operators forum or users group where we can discuss these airplanes and help each other get questions answered. There’s a Facebook page, but the page looks dead, and Facebook isn’t where many pilots go to learn anything. I’ve been looking everywhere but I haven’t come across any other resources. May start a thread here if no one chimes in. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I just recently bought a 1997 extra 300/200 to learn more about flying I would be interested in finding out if there is any owner forum as well. I have an immediate issue, the rudder pedal adjustment in my extra is motorized from a "forward/backward" switch. However only the left side motor is working. Does anyone have experience with maintenance of these rudder pedal adjustment mechanisms?

For that I’d email Dunc Koerbel at Extra USA in DeLand Florida. Their A&P can give your A&P some guidance.
