G3X Touch New User Help - Database Updates // Chartkey

I have purchased the US Database Bundle, and also installed the Garmin desktop app. I inserted a 16GB SD card, formatted as FAT32. The software displayed seven products available to update, and the update installer ran without error, indicating that the updates were successfully downloaded. The amount of data on the card is 3.55 gigs. I don't see anything in the card's directory structure that makes me thing everything downloaded as indicated - does this directly layout look complete?

Also, regarding the Chartkey... even with expired databases I have been able to view/use IFR approach plates, with ship position... so I am not clear on why I need this?

Put the SD card into the G3X and power it up. Let it run the updates. It'll tell you if anything's missing.

The ChartView Key is something that is needed to view Jeppesen charts.

Perhaps I should have indicated that the aircraft is about an hour away, would be nice to head off any sort of problem before heading over there. Thanks for the helpful advice.

My opinion after a couple of years with
My G3X is that you're overthinking it. Upload the updates, install the updates. The system works pretty darn well.

It’s probably fine, I’ve had no issues updating my G3X yet.

why don’t you bring your laptop with you in case you have to reload something?

At the time this manual was written, Garmin recommended 8GB SD cards. Not sure if there's a problem with larger cards, or just a reflection of the time the manual was published.

The only other thing I've noticed is it works well if the card is fully formatted, and then I load the databases. Any other non Garmin stuff on the card creates problems.

Whenever I insert the Garmin sdcard, Windows offers to fix a “problem” , I always decline. Other than that, I never had any issues with the writing of the databases.

If you go into the Windows 'Safely Remove Hardware' menu and 'eject' the SD card before physically ejecting it, you won't get that issue.

Or go into the Preferences menu for the card from Windows and turn on Quick Removal (slower writes), which makes it so you can physically eject the SD card without issue.
