Any avionics shops that do screen replacement for the Garmin 430 non Waas? Garmin will only do it if you upgrade to Wass. All I need is a new screen!

All I need is a new screen!

You'll get the new screen and more in the upgrade. And you might not save any money by doing screen only.

One caveat: installation might be more if you need to replace the existing coax, but if it's just upgraded 430W and the WAAS antenna it's an easy thing.

[<-- Saving/Spending other guys money]

Spend as much as they're asking for the WAAS upgrade ($4500, holy smokes!) and you'd have to think seriously about upgrading to the GTN series... lightly used copies available for not too much more. Gets you into the next 20 year avionics cycle instead of the very tail end of the last one. After two complete panel upgrades over 20 years of aircraft ownership it's the way I'd approach it.

Just a thought -- I know this topic sometimes gets people worked up. To each their own.

Something to keep in mind. Your current 430 is worth nothing, and working 430 non-WAAS about $2000.

The 430 after Garmin WAAS upgrade looks like brand new in the box. Total value about $5500. You’re money on the positive side if you do the repair and upgrade. Should you decide to immediately turn around and sell the upgraded 430, it comes with a one-year garment factory warranty. Meaning you can probably get $6000+ for the unit.

Is your unit 28V only? Garmin is still doing flat rate repairs on non-WAAS 430's, except for the 28V only models, of which the only option is an upgrade to WAAS. To my knowledge, Garmin doesn't release the component level repair manuals even to dealers, so the only one that can officially change the screen would be Garmin. If your screen just has the anti-glare coating coming off and looks terrible but is otherwise functional, there are some means to strip the remaining coating improving it's look.

Armor All Cleaning wipes. Scrub diligently for about 10-15mins. Looks brand new.
Also you might check the contrast setting, mines doing something weird and it looks totally washed out, even yellow, but if I set the contrast manually it looks perfect. May mean something is on its way out but for now I'll keep setting it manually.

I haven't tried B489s Armor All, but cleaned up my 400W with vinegar and cotton puffs. Was told needed acidic to remove the old reflective coating. That coating does nothing as far as I can tell.

If true, that's the ticket right there for the OP, if I were in his shoes. Swap the thing and motor on.

hi
If you could get the screen part number on the back. You can get a new one from the factory at Amazon. Actually Inam looking for the number because I do not want to take it down.

There are some many Armor all wipes. Could you tell what did you use ?

So taking a look at my screen, I'm not sure if the lcd is delaminating or if it is the reflective coating coming off.

It would be great news if I can get by and scrub the coating off.

So I tried to fix up my GNS 430 screen today. It was developing a dull spot in the middle. I tried Maguire's plastic polish for plastic headlights. It worked, now the dull spot is much much bigger.

Went home and took out a can of..... SCIENCE!!! Got out an old CD, useless (Beatles greatest hits... yawn). First I applied the Maguire's. It did not appear to do any damage. Then I tried, what everyone and their dog says to try, which is TOOTHPASTE. Rub for a minute with one of those high tech cloth things. I was quite shocked to find it left varying size scratches on the CD. I have no idea why everyone recommends this, DON'T DO THAT.

Anyways, I ordered Novus #1 solution and Amor all wipes off amazon. Will see what happens. Somewhat depressed. The 430 is still usable, but the shine on the screen is gone. I know because I have two of them, and the bottom one is in perfect shape. Its the original one (20 years) that is going south. Like I said, usable but has a big dull spot in the middle that does not shine with the power off.

Yes, all brands of tooth paste are highly abrasive (I used to work for Colgate). Hey, got to rip that tartar off somehow. Echo the headlight polish - it's never worked for me on headlights; I don't think it works for anyone.

It's plastic. It can be polished back to shiny. But it will take lots of tedious effort and small tools. And patience.

What would you do to polish it back ? What would you use, tools, etc.

I have used novus on my canopy with good result but not sure about a 430 screen.

Yeah maybe even Novus 3, maybe a very small block with a cloth swab, if that's not going anywhere a VERY slow setting with a Dremel tool and a buffing pad. Slow, steady and even coverage. Work to uniformity with #3, then #2, and probably a screen protector on top of that and you'll be good to go.

ArmorAll is junk. Don't touch anything in your airplane with it. I bet you'll end up buying a new screen or GPS in the end.

I've used rustoleum recolor for quite a few things. And it works great on plastic and metal. I would test it on an old cell phone screen or something similar first.

Got the Amor all and the Novus #1 today. Tried both on the surface of a CD to make sure they wouldn't damage it. After both passed that test, I used it on the 430. The bottom line is like the others said here, there is a coating that was coming off, and the Amor all removed it more or less completely (some remaining in the edges). Its acceptable, not great. It mainly looks different because the 2nd 430 just under it has a screen in original condition, so they look different now. The older 430 had the coating coming off in any case. I don't know how you would go about replacing the coating, or if that is worth doing. Probably a new screen and lots of $$$.

I should mention that my GNS 430 comes from 20 years ago, it was a 28v unit in a 12v aircraft, so used the converter. It got converted to 430W some years ago, and now fits into a very modern stack. I'm pretty happy with a unit that has lasted so long and that Garmin has continued to support. In fact, most of my other stack is garmin as well, and its mainly because of the usefulness and support for the first unit that I kept buying Garmin. Its why I bought a second one to complement the first one.

The Armor All Cleaner works well every time, can't replace the coating but a good anti-glare screen protector will do just fine. They're getting hard to find for the 430's so you may need to get a 480 or whatever and simply trim to fit. It will also hide any minor imperfections in your polish job.

You are ahead of me. I flew the airplane today, no real difference in air, but me and my passenger noted the difference in look on the ground. At this point it is clearly a vanity project, since the 430 operates fine. I found a precut anti-glare screen protector from Sporty's, I'll let you know if that works out. The screen under the coating is in great shape. It seems touching it wore some of the coating off (hey, its 20 years old!). I notice that Macbooks have this same issue (online search).

It says "dropped product" so it went unobtainium.

Has anyone been successful in finding a part number to replace the screen? Would be very interested if so....

there was a guy who supposedly can replace them……I sent an email via the online form but no reply. Mine isn’t failed failed yet, but rumor is eventually will become unreadable.

not legally. an IFR GPS must be a tso'ed unit, to maintain the TSO it must be repaired according to the FAA approved documents. garmin does NOT provide those manuals to anybody. so if he does it, the TSO is invalid and the unit is illegal for IFR operations.

Call Bevan Aviation in Kansas...they do repairs on some parts of the GNS 430...they will know what can can obtained.

aim 1-1-17
General Requirements. Authorization to conduct any GPS operation under IFR requires:
  1. GPS navigation equipment used for IFR operations must be approved in accordance with the requirements specified in Technical Standard Order (TSO) TSO-C129(), TSO-C196(), TSO-C145(), or TSO-C146(), and the installation must be done in accordance with Advisory Circular AC 20-138, Airworthiness Approval of Positioning and Navigation Systems. Equipment approved in accordance with TSO-C115a does not meet the requirements of TSO-C129. Visual flight rules (VFR) and hand-held GPS systems are not authorized for IFR navigation, instrument approaches, or as a principal instrument flight reference.
yes, the aim is not regulatory. however, it is written using regulatory information and other documents from the FAA.

this a section taken from an avweb article about regulatory and non regulatory that uses gps as an example. it shows how the FAA could use the AIM to show violation of 91.205.

Go back to the GPS example. It’s not an emergency. You used your iPad to fly an instrument approach and caused a problem. You violated §91.123 by not following your clearance and §91.205(d) by not having “navigation equipment suitable for the route to be flown.” But the AIM and other “non‑regulatory” documents prohibiting the use of non‑certified GPS equipment for primary IFR navigation will be part of the proof, at least with respect to the §91.205 analysis. I would expect it to also be relevant to the sanction imposed for the violation.

also, the wording used is, "meet the requirements of TSO...." that means that you do not have to HAVE the tso, but the manufacture must prove that the requirements are met, if they go through the testing to prove that, they just get the TSO as a marketing plus.
i know of no IFR gps unit that is approved that does not have a TSO.
