Night time departure. The aircraft was cleared for take off on Rwy 13 but didn't turn onto the runway and attempted to depart on the taxiway. It hit a fence around some fuel tanks and came to rest inverted. Luckily, the pilot was able get out on his own.

Sounds to me like this guys situational awareness was a long way from double checking runway heading. I mean it’s not like he was in a taildragger with crap ground visibility on an unlit airport...... it’s pretty hard to miss those big white stripes. Or the pretty blue lights.....
 
Maybe he was thinking someone changed the runway lights to blue for Christmas....

This runway is really short. Yeah, but look how wide it is!

Could have been a lot worse. Night flight unfamiliar field, probably rushing, luckily Alice hopefully without serious injuries. Wonder when the “oh crap” moment happened.
 
Well, gee. If only they would put up signs and paint the runway number in big characters at the end of the runway. Then we could install a device in the aircraft that told you which way it was pointed that you could compare to the runway you intend to depart from.

If it was being flown by the person it is registered to, the pilot was 84 years old.
And there you have it. We all gotta quit flying at some point. Better to quit on your own terms than having the FAA yank your cert while you struggle to live in the ICU after plowing into a fence taking off the wrong way.

Agree! Always check runway heading. At night in particular, ForeFlight's synthetic vision is amazing for verifying proper runway for take-off or landing.

Probably when the two above-ground fuel tanks got in his way.

Before judging too harshly, know that the pilot you're talking about, and having fun with, is a hero! Not only is he an Air Force veteran, but he crashed his plane to avoid hitting two huge fuel tanks that would have killed dozens, if not hundreds, of people on the nearby, busy highway. He clipped his wing off to just narrowly avoid the tanks. Even the first responders don't know how he made it out alive from his mangled, inverted wreck. Sure, he made a rookie mistake. For that, he's turned in his license, voluntarily, and against the protestation of the FAA, given his experience and number of years flying. For the number of lives he saved, we should be grateful that a pilot of his agility and experience was at the wheel.

Ummm I’m a Navy vet but come on. People make light of things when the outcome is overall positive. Levity. Not at the expense of the pilot. I doubt if he was reading the comments here he would feel the same consternation you are expressing. And to be sure, he didn’t drive his airplane into the fuel tanks because of thinking about people on a freeway, but rather oh sh********** DO NOT WANT!!

You don't get to be a hero saving people from your own stupidity.
