The departing fan disc apparently took out all electrical, so they flew "blind" back to the airport, heavy, no extra flaps or spoilers, impressive work by the crew. AVHerald has a couple good videos of it landing.. man are they low making that base to final turn!!

You (or at least I), don't appreciate how much energy those engines have inside of them until you see a picture like this, below. That thing cut clean through what is arguably the strongest part of the airplane

Amazing plane. I am always a little nervous sitting inline with the engines commercial. Like that Southwest flight where an engine disintegrated killing a passenger not too long ago. Multi props can do some damage as well. One of the beauties of a front mounted single turbine, if the engine or prop grenades, the parts aren't coming into the cabin. ;)

the engine failed shortly after gear attraction with the flaps still in the takeoff setting

As I understand it all electrical and hydraulic was lost and the gear was dropped via the alternate emergency extension and the remaining brake power was via accumulator.. flaps remained as they were set in their takeoff position

There was QF32 in 2014. Turbine disk let go. Quite likely some of the major pieces went away from the airframe. Cause was an oil leak inside the engine core and subsequent internal fire. Hub failed, disk overspeeded and burst.

That's right, they had to extinguish the engine with multiple fire trucks.. right?

Statistically isn't sitting just behind the wing the safest spot? I thought I read that somewhere..
 
It looked like he was slipping on final to get down. Anyone else see that? If so, if he could have just held it a little longer, may have not gone off the end

can you imagine slipping a plane that huge? Nuts! I saw that too but didn't know if it was because he overshot the turn or was trying to get down

With a heavy load, take off fuel, and no thrust reverser and presumably no anti-lock brakes either I think they were going off the end either way

There's a guy, "D Antonov" who flies all these big planes, including AN-225.. it's a cool channel and the crews appear very professional, kind of kills the "grab the Vodka and let's go Vasili" stereotype
