Looking to put a short surfboard (5’8”) in a c172. Does anyone have experience doing this? (Most important question)

Do any of the model years of the 172’s have a bit more storage?

If it allowed to remove a rear seat?

Is storage capacity much larger in the 182?

Thanks all...

Later models have the tailcone shelf that earlier models do not.

The 172's I've flown allow the rear seatbacks to fold down (not that it helps much with most items).

In terms of cubic inches, no.

I would think the biggest struggle is getting it through the doors.

I put a 5'9" prop in a 172, but I could slide it under the rear seats...

I'm sure you can do that with a surfboard too.

Just imagine you're at Home Depot loading a 12 foot long 2x10 into a Camry. It's ok if it sticks out the window a little bit.

Two surfboards with holes in the right place = wheel-skis! :)

If you remove a rear seat, you have to re-do the W&B, right?

A guy I know has an inflatable paddle board. Seemed to work well. Look for inflatable surf boards.

I've been told that a new W&B sheet with A&P signature is not required.

Just you? Or do you need room for someone to ride shotgun?

Higher model numbers like 182, 206 or 210 will make it easier. But it’s all about getting it though the door. I think it’s probably a matter of which way to twist it in a 172 if you can.

unfortunately those higher models also come with a higher price tag.

What's the "thing a ma jigs" on the mains ?
Short surfboards ?
Gravel guards. I have been looking for a set for my 150, but nobody seems to have made commercial versions. Have to ask my AP to make a set as a minor mod.

Great idea , Most all my landing spots are gravel roads . I do have the heavy rubber glued on to the rear horizontal stabilizer . It helps .
The mini shields look good , Make some from old stop signs .

Edit : might even add a bit of lift if designed right ?

I take the rear seat out of my 172 all the time when I want to carry bikes or other things. Do have the alternative W&B for the 20lbs rear seat being out....
Yes a shortboard will fit. Allegedly, you can remove the rear cargo panel if you need an additional foot or so. Surfboards are light...
Love my 172 for what I can stuff into it. Do wish it was faster, but beggars/choosers/etc...

I'd want to see Cessna's documentation on that. Removing that panel presents the possibility of stuff falling into the control cables.

yeah... allegedly... as in not approved but will cause 20 pages of POA "discussion".

Or make an owner provided part that extends the rear baggage like a slot for the board. Surfboard extension instead of a ski tube extension.
