Our neighbor passed away and his family is ready to sell his 1967 Cessna 182K N3183Q.
The plane has sat for the last 15 years in a hangar and has all the associated problems of a plane that has sat for years, although no interior water damage because its been in his hangar.

We had a 172 sit like that in a hangar out by me for about 10 years before the city finally foreclosed. It was sold as scrap and apparently bought by a restaurant as a display. It had 0 value as an aircraft.

To this day I still don't know if they got the stain off the concrete from all the various fluids that leaked out of it.

Unless you could get it for a song, I wouldn’t even consider it....and even then, I still probably wouldn’t consider it. The property might be a different story and something worth looking into.
 
Same story in my hangar. There is a Cessna 210 Turbo that has been “pickled” since 2009. Owned by a dentist who lost his medical but was always going to get it back. Apparently, it has some of the bad cylinders and about 100 hours from TBO. The avionics are ancient. One of my hangar mates was looking at it since he is an A&P and hoped he could get it for a reasonable price and then do the rebuild on the engine, center spar inspection, etc., and get it airworthy again. Nope - dentist thinks it’s a $150K plane as is. I guess it will continue to sit and it will become his widow’s problem.

My thoughts as a potential buyer, although this is not the aircraft I'm looking for.

I would consider the engine to be done

with a 0 time engine and refurb of whatever else is wrong, about 70k. 50k with TBO engine, less because of the concerns around corrosion and other rot issues.

I think you could possibly get a little more if there was recent flying time and/or have an easier time selling. Proving the aircraft is good after sitting would help with the sale - say 100 hours or so.

If you could get it cheap and do a good mechanical restore, there's probably money to be made as a project for you.
 
What is it about aviation that causes some people to be so emotional about it that they hang on to airpanes in these sorts of circumstances?
 
I would have to go into it expecting to replace everything firewall forward as well as avionics and possibly glass and paint. All that plus the big unknown of corrosion once everything is opened up, my bid wouldn't be more than $20k, probably less. Are the logs complete?
 
Colonial Skimmer down at the end of the hangar row sat for longer than that (most of that time in the hangar I have now) and has been resurrected. Not without issues, but no big job stoppers.
 
Plunk it on eBay and enjoy the PT Barnum effect in real-time. After 3 or 4 flakes, you'll know what it's worth. In this stupid market I bet it'd pull nearly 40 grand.

Around here the hangar rent over 15 years would nearly match the value of a decent Skylane. Eesh.

This airport is a (Spanaway Wa), is a owner address = no rent.
I've lost the FB link, Oh Well.

My worries would be the cost of up grades to bring it up todays requirements.
 
OK I did get a response, and did bid, there are about $90K in maintenance costs to bring it back to new status..

and that is about what they sell for.. :)

Engine was a surprise $55K if all components are rebuildable.

So my $20k bid was actually $20k too high. Not surprising.
 
I would get it as close as I could. But I'm just that way. If I wanted to live in Wa. I'd consider the real estate if the airplane was thrown in.
