New Private Pilot Training in Alaska

Hello,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a fresh new private pilot as of last week. Just had my first instrument lesson today and hope to become a commercial pilot in the near future. I'm training out of Palmer Alaska (PAAQ) and I'm in love with the aviation community up here. I recently stumbled across this website and see that it's a great resource so I thought I'd join.

Took up my first passenger as a PPL holder and thought I'd share some of the photos of the quick trip out to the Knik Glacier. I'm lucky to have such a cool place to fly just a 5 min flight from the airport.

Looking forward to joining the discussion!

I’m just down the road at Merrill.
Very cool. I've only flown into Merrill a couple times but it's so cool flying out 25 over the city. I really need to come back and practice my towered radio calls...

Congrats. I'm usually about 500 miles down the road in Juneau. Covid kept in the L48 this Summer. Have fun with the new cert.
 
Hello. I flew into Palmer years ago, seemed like the glacier was just across the water, great scenery. If I was living in AK I’d skimp on the car & get a plane.
 
Fly Around Alaska? Flying changes with the seasons and we're in the transition now. Enjoy the daylight while we have it, and watch for traffic in the Knik. That place is way too busy.

Look at the Flyout Alaska facebook page. Much more in tune with AK pilots than this site. Have fun.

Hello. I flew into Palmer years ago, seemed like the glacier was just across the water, great scenery. If I was living in AK I’d skimp on the car & get a plane.
You can basically see the glacier from the ramp. Just a couple minute flight to get to it from the airport. Buying a plane is my next major goal!

Actually Blue River Aviation. I know a few CFI's at Fly Around though and we see them everyday on the ramp. I was definitely scanning for traffic while up the Knik but chose a weekday to help a little with traffic.

I requested to join the Flyout Alaska FB page but still haven't been accepted unfortunately. Maybe I'll try again. Thanks for the suggestion.

By the way awesome looking cub!
 
Every Summer a handful fly the Al-Can Hwy. Maybe next July a kegger in your hangar? We can discuss the attributes of a proper compass deviation card.

Looks awesome! I am looking to move up there as a CFI, I am sure that it is full right now but do you know any of the schools that might take on a CFII?
Man it's a tough time out there for CFI's right now. I know the flight school I'm at has a tall stack or resumes. I think you really gotta network to get a job at the moment. If you're willing to move up here and look for a related job you can sometimes slide into a position.

"Balls Hotel" that's pretty good. I'll have to start calling it that haha. It's still running well! I have most my my time in 00H. We're actually going to be updating the avionics soon I hear. Awesome to see it on gravel I've only got to land on gravel once so far in Girdwood. Here's an recent exterior photo of a trip to Kenai.

That is a former Yute Air plane.?? Man, looks brand new. The Yute planes I flew were beat senseless. The leading edges of the horizontal stabilizers were flattened by rocks and the planes were so bent that even with the controls trimmed as far as they would go if you let go of the yoke most of the planes would drop a wing and start spiraling down. Flight instruments were barely at the most VFR legal. Yeah, they went through some ''stuff'' alright.

The plan for the day wasn't IF one crashed, but WHEN one crashes..... and the pilots would gather in the evening to see who got fired that day, and again in the morning to see who left in the middle of the night. (yes, we would place bets)

That plane, along with 32D used to be Yute Air birds out in Bethel. I have it on good authority that 32D (no it wasn’t me) will fly with 800lbs of moose in the back with the seats folded up with 2 220 pound guys in the front seat. Those planes have seen some stuff!
