Today I received my furlough letter from Delta. Unless there’s a cares 2, I’ll be out on October 1st. Its been crazy the past few months but I’ve been expecting it. Thankfully, ALPA is paying for COBRA so I don’t need to worry about insurance for 18 months, which is good because my current job doesn’t offer any. My last flight was February 22nd with Endeavor. I’ve been working as a car transporter for hertz. It’s funny, I’ve been more to JFK the past few weeks with hertz than with Delta! My former student’s dad is offering me right seat in a PC-12 all part 91. He owns a 135/91 company in FRG and they fly Falcon 2000s, GIV, PC-12, and an S-76z His pilot is leaving the first week of September and he said I can sit right seat. Once I get enough hours, he’s going to send me to flight safety so I can get PIC qualified. Thanks for coming to my ted talk:)

I know it does not make it any easier, but its only temporary. hang in there. my airline is cutting 1600. it misses me by a bit, but if there is more it could get to me. I started on the ramp for 11 years, went to a wholly owned for 17 years, flowed back, have been there almost 5 years now and could have held captain on the last bid before this all started. after 32 years with the same company I could be furloughed also. it will get better.
 
Good luck with the new job. You’ve got a positive outlook. I’m sure things will turn for the better and you’ll be back with Delta in no time.

Your relentlessly positive attitude is pure character. Long run, you'll be fine, but to be honest, I think you'll be fine short-term, too.

Do you know if they make you give up your seniority number? We had a few guys apply to CBP and they required them to resign from Delta.

LOL ah yes, that piece of... work, agency.

According to APC their hiring is on its rear right now anyways, plus the typical shenanigans with failing people on the poly left and right. Blessing in disguise for your buddies afaic. No way I give up a line number at a legacy for the CBP. Hell, I wouldn't give up a -76 job at one of the illustrious 36th St 120.5 outfits in MIA for that place. I digress.

There's not too many flying jobs on the civilian side of the Fed, but honestly if I were in that predicament I'd just go FAA ASI route and/or hope to piggyback into flight check.

Good question. I didn't arrive at the agency from the airlines so it was never an issue for me. I think ultimate the question comes down to whether staying on the seniority list is considered maintaining a financial interest in the airline. More typically you have to sell any aviation related stock before working for the agency.

Yes it definitely could be worse. I don’t think I’ll be out for more than 2 years. I’m retiring number 50 in the company so there’s plenty more flying to do:)

It sucks in the short term, but at the end of the day, you've got a job at Delta when things come back. You're not stuck at a regional for who knows how much longer.
 
Better to have flown and been furloughed, than to never have flown at all. :D Seriously, good luck with the new gig!
 
Why not go straight into the gulfstream? Seems silly to put a jet pilot into the pc12. Side note I'm sorry about the furlough and I live with a DAL pilot. However I hope they don't go cares 2. I know way too many pilots making way north of 100k and there is no work in sight for them. Should they keep their jobs when nobody is buying their product when all of America lost their jobs 6 months ago?

3. I agree. I don’t think a cares 2 would do anything besides kick the can down the road. It’s going to be a multi year recovery so another 6 months of money isn’t going to solve anything.

Yea it’s the best place to be “stuck.” Everyone is staying in their current position/employer for a few years.

My company is in the events industry...that industry has been decimated even more than the airline industry!

Many of those folks are not just out of jobs, entire careers and sectors of that industry have evaporated.

Look on the bright side... I don’t know Delta’s probationary policy, but it’s quite possible you will finish probation without a chance to eff up.

@jordane93 obviously I don't know you outside your postings on this forum, but I will say that I've been impressed with your hustle. I remember when this thing started you weren't looking for sympathy, you were looking for a job. Slinging boxes, driving cars, anything to pay the bills. Im not surprised that someone wants you to work for them. Sounds like an opportunity to see some smaller airports you won't get a chance to at delta.

I think flying will recover fairly quick. Assuming a viable vaccine becomes available, the desire to go somewhere will be overwhelming. I bet delta calls you back well before your cobra expires.
 
Personally I think there will be a Cares 2, I think there will be a vaccine within 4-6 months, and I think the pent-up demand to travel by those of us who truly love to get out and see the world will explode. The casual traveler may not come back as quickly, but the true wanderers out there - and there are many of us - will burst out of the gates. It could be me, but I see a normal schedule from AA to the Caribbean in January. And prices are on the rise.

Sorry to hear that, I hope the part 91/135 deal works out to keep you flying until things turn around. Didn't Delta just announce that a sizeable group of pilots accepted retirement rather than furlough ? Should make for a quick career once air travel returns to near normal.
 

I had a neighbor who made an entire fed career with DHS while on furlough from US Airways. An anesthesiologist I worked with managed to go through medschool and anesthesia residency until United finally sent him a 'come back or else' letter. He came back and now combines a job sitting on reserve for a living with a part time medical practice (probably back to furlough by now).

Christy Wong, who does the 'taking off' YouTube channel with Dan millican, got hired at a regional in Jan or feb. They continued her class, but I don't think she ever got to fly passengers.

One of our club members had an offer and was supposed to report in June, but obviously that got canceled. He had already sold his house & car. Luckily the house buyer backed out due to the pandemic, so he has a place to live, and he's still teaching at the 141 school. Apparently they're still going to hire him, but no word on when.

I was listening to Andrew Alexander, CEO of Red Roof Inns last night on the way home and he agrees. Americans love to travel, see friends, family and far flung places. When we get a vaccine, according to Alexander, the pent up demand to go somewhere is going to explode. Of course his industry like airlines is in tatters, but he has to be optimistic about the future. And when that pent up demand is unleashed, the airline industry will recover, perhaps spectacularly.

Why do airline pilots deserve to sit home and get paid so much when so many others were furloughed or laid off back in April? I have quite a few friends on paid leaves from the airlines and many others that arent even working but those big checks keep rolling in. Must be nice to get paid from the Gov to do nothing.

I don't believe I said anything about what anyone deserves, I simply stated what I think is going to happen.

I’ve been on property for 6 months already and haven’t touched a plane. When I get recalled, I’ll only be on probation for a few months.

Yea I’m just glad I don’t have to worry about health care for 18 months. I think travel will come back sooner than expected. Delta relies heavily on business travelers and they’re saying business travel isn’t coming back anytime soon. I hope they’re wrong.

1807 pilots took an early retirement. That was able to save 600 pilots. Gotta get some more old guys out of my seat:D
