Our 1978 182p has a small leak coming from the right wing which seems fairly common for her age ( getting the bladders replaced) The issue I’m concerned with is after a flight of 20 min or more when I land and go to refuel pressure is built up in the tank. So when the nozzle is inserted and pushes the little flap down into the tank, we get a good spirt if fuel up onto the wing( or your face if your not careful). Does that seem right and if not, anyone have thought on why this is happening?

Which side is this happening?

Little flap in the filler? Has this airplane been modified?

The vent check valve might be plugged. That valve is designed to let air in rapidly, but out slowly. It has a tiny hole to let the air out, and that hole might be plugged. You could get damage to the wing from that as pressure builds on a hot day or as you climb. Get it checked.

Dumb question on my part...are you sure the bladder hasn’t shifted or ballooned, if that’s even possible? Bad vent could in theory collapse the bladder during fuel flow? Hence making it look like a rubber flap. I know, sounds stupid.

Right tank is vented via crossover tube to left tank, which is then vented via external fuel vent. Could be blocked at crossover. Cap relief valve/vent could be bad in addition to crossover vent line.

Is the leak at the wing root? Inside or outside the cockpit? I had an issue with fuel tubing between the bladders and internal hard tubings as they tend to rot over time. They are 2-4” rubber sections of tubbing. To get to them you’ll need to remove the inspection cover plate along the wing root. You may need to also fold back the headliner to to get to the other side that connects to the hard line.

I'll join the chorus on the "Flap in the filler" group? I fly a 182P as well and replaced the Monarch caps with regular caps and update the seals. If your leak is coming from near the wing root it sounds a bit like the leak I had from a fuel sender gasket.
