Freedom boat from Greens Creek Mine......

Road the freedom boat home from work yesterday. I'm just getting home from a 4 week stay at the mine. Worked 350 hours for the month, 160 regular pay and 190 overtime pay.
Edit: 700 hrs for the month, 320 hrs regular pay, 380 hours overtime pay

Looks like they feed ya well for a short trip....



And happy to see ya back from the underground.!!
 
Would be interested in learning more about what you do and where in general terms the mine is located. My BIL used to work at the Red Dog mine somewhere near Nome. I think he was 3-4 weeks on and then 2 weeks off.

The Red Dog mine is north of Noatak, which is north of Kotzebue, all above the Arctic Circle, which is north of Nome. An area where I spent some years living and flying....

Where Bill works is near Juneau in picturesque Alaska, lots of water surrounded by mountains.

And the Red Dog mine has one excellent mess hall staffed with real chefs. Everytime I got to go there I just about had to be carried out....:yesnod:

And I believe Bill is getting well fed too.!!

I had not stayed at camp since 2000, the food today is 100% better than we had back then..

I will post more pics as I edit them. Hard work but satisfying at the end of the day
 
First flight after working underground 4 weeks Taku Glacier and an underground loader that was buried by a ground fall mid June. Loader was being operated remote so no one was in the cab. 1.5 million loss, they are not going to recover the loader

Surprised that they won’t recover it with that kind of a value. We send 75 cent drill bits back to be reground until there is less than a half inch of flute left.

It's not under supported ground. It's in what we call a long hole stope, and that is why they remote muck the ore out. The back or (roof/ceiling) is 60 feet up and there is no way to support the ground. The loss of the ore in that stope is worth a lot more than the loader. If it was not buried there is a way to retrieve, just to much weight sitting on top of it to move it.
 
Got out fishing the other day. Fishing was great but the catching was poor. I did get one nice salmon...:)

Nice to get some good weather lately too. Everybody is working on their tan for the few sunny days. LOL. But being Juneau, rain is on the way.

It is insured against loss. Plus insurance would consider it to be too much of a risk to have folks trying to get it out. Cheaper for the company and insurance company to leave it.

I was curious what they were mining and a quick google search found this...."In 2017, Greens Creek Mine produced approximately 8,351,882 ounces of silver, 50,854 ounces of gold, 52,547 tons of zinc, and 17,996 tons of lead."

Approx current prices....

Silver - $17/oz
Gold - $1,700/oz
Zinc - $2,800/ton
Lead - $1,750/ton

Basically they can afford the loader....:D

And what Bill said is probably a worse hit if a section of ore is now lost that may be worth way more than the loader.
 
Where can you get silver for $17/oz or gold for 1700/oz? Those are paper prices. Real stuff costs a lot more.

Those are guide prices for people who dont follow metals to get an idea how much revenue the mine generates.

And if your selling 8,000,000 ounces a year...you're selling at/near the market price quoted or possibly some other contract price.


But yes you're right if you go down to the local gold store to buy a few pennyweight it will be cost more than the handy & harman spot price.
