Motorcycle Rant

Sounds like a challenge. If I'm watching my mirrors and you're white lining, there's no way you're stopping in time. You can't stop that bike in 2 feet, because that opening door or that swerve is going to happen as soon as your back wheel is even with my back wheel. If I was so inclined to do such a thing. Unless of course you've mastered the art of quantum tunneling - which I doubt you have.

Seems to me there would probably be laws against opening doors while driving.

There are probably laws against murder, too, but apparently that won't stop EdFred, why should a pesky door law matter?

Well. he did say "...if i was inclined..." and I don't think he is. But if someone did it deliberately, and it killed the rider, it would be Third Degree Murder.

Does it hurt yer poe wittow feeweens to have a big bag motorcycle pass you while you are stuck in twaffic?
Why would it? I've got two motorcycles in my garage and I'm looking at possibly buying another one.

I also love the assumptions that people make on here.

The point I was making was obviously missed.

Back when I had a manual in my car before I sold it last fall, there were a number of laws that I broke while driving at least in my state. For example it's illegal to put your car in neutral or put in the clutch and coast down a hill. So it wouldn't be surprising that opening the door could be illegal but at the same time it may be legal.

Ed, I ride a sport bike, not some farkled up Harley. At 15 mph I bet I could stop or at least hit your door at very low speed. Probably do more damage to your door than my bike. And of course you’d have the stuffing beaten out of you by myself and ever other biker who saw the incident. We take unkindly to cagers trying to hurt bikers. I know you think yourself a badass, but I doubt you’ve fought off a posse of honked off bikers. In general I think it really wise to leave bikers alone. The Harley guys might be playing make believe, but most other bikers are for real, and lots and lots are less than savory characters.

Bwhahahahaha. That might be the funniest thing I have ever read. First I've been riding sportbikes my entire adult life, and dirt bikes since I was 10. So you can't ******** me on what they are and aren't capable of, and as much as you want us to believe, you are not the second coming of Joey Dunlop. Secondly, PhD must stand for Pretty Honkin Dumb. If you are doing 15 miles an hour it makes it even easier to knock you on your ass with a door because it's way easier to time it. Also since it's not a Harley that even makes it less of an issue because they weigh about half what a Harley does. And thirdly, you're going to tell me that after you've been knocked to the ground you're going to get your 5 foot 6 140 lb sit in a lab and classroom all day butt up and and take me down when I outweigh you by 75 lb, have nine inches on you, have a background in boxing, kickboxing, MMA, and instructed martial arts for years?

You are more delusional than I've ever given you credit for.

The more Michael posts about motorcycles, the more convinced I am that his riding experience consists of reading motorcycle magazines and Internet forums, rather than any actual mikes on the road.

I found a photo of Michael on the interwebs:

steingar definitely has an inflated opinion of his abilities.

“At 15 mph I bet I could stop or at least hit your door at very low speed...”

15 mph = 22 fps. Driver 10’ in front opens door out of spite. That’s about 1/2 second to react.

In 1/2 second, human reaction time will have him hitting the door at 15 mph. Not stopped, or even slowed down. Unless he’s superhuman!

So back to Austin's rant about motorcyclists, Austin, I'd suggest you try motorcycling at some point. You might not like it but you might surprise yourself. I bet you'd enjoy it. Come out here to Kansas and I'll help make that happen. Or, as we suggested Morgan do, take the MSF course. Now's a great time to do it if you can find an open slot.

Or let's take the other option, person purposely opens the door even later than that, with the express intent of trying to hit you with the door as you're next to it and knock you over.

Reality is it's not going to be hard to purposely use your door as a weapon against a motorcyclist if you wanted to.

Well, as long as we're discussing the ridiculous, I should point out that getting your car door open and your arm out of the way in that same 1/2 second might be a little challenging....

But, if the door were open and @steingar did not have time to stop, I'm quite sure he'd merely kick the door off the car, driver's arm included, and drive over it.

Yeah, but what kind of idiot would do that ?

If I see a motorcycle in my mirror lane-splitting, I can:
A. Watch him go by and continue on my way towards my destination.
B. Knock him off his bike, spend the next hour with the police, two insurance companies, a bent truck-door that doesn't close....

Really, people need to check their ego when they get at the controls of a motor vehicle, regardless of the number of wheels.

That's a fair point, but I also doubt the kind of person who would do that would think so clearly about the second part. You could also go for the shock factor of opening the door as the motorcycle is alongside (again, timing is difficult but I think doable).

It's not unlike pretty much any other argument that involves using anything as a weapon (including actual weapons). Road rage is a thing, and we're logical folks who wouldn't do that. In these days of helmet cams and dash cams it's even stupider.

I've never seen anyone purposely try to cause me harm on a motorcycle, just people trying to accidentally. So I'm not saying it's something that would be concern me.

I like riding. and driving. and flying. just dont be a jerk and dont act like you are the only person around you. Seems simple.

You're assuming they stick around to wait for the police. I've seen a number of videos where cars/trucks have spilled out a motorcycle on purpose, and then drove off. People like that aren't going to stick around.

Yeah, there are cowards like that. With the proliferation of dash-cams, its getting more and more difficult for them to get away with that.

Quite a lot of motorcycles(and cars around) have dash cams on these days. Lots of these cars/trucks that have spilled motorcycles and drove off have been charged with attempted murders. Not to mention lost licenses. Not a strategy I would employ these days

I don't really know why people think that filtering and proper lane splitting is dangerous. My guess, unfamiliarity and general fear of motorcycles. Some spite on top. Quite literally, the entire rest of the world does it and does it safely(relatively). California experience is a proof that it's no big deal to implement it in US.

I think the only reason it's illegal in most states is because motorcyclists are generally a small group compare to car drivers(who think it's crazy) and the biggest group(heavy bikes) don't care about it as much.

It's really very odd that in some states it's easier to repeal helmets laws than allow filtering/splitting.

You need to drive around a little down south. These folks will do anything to not, in their mind, lose. Say you're on a two lane 55mph road, and you come up on a pickup doing 45. You get to a passing zone, and you go to pass. Well, if you do, you better bury it, because I 100% guarantee that pickup driver is going WFO. If you have a faster car (some of the pickups these days are plenty fast), you get by, if not, you don't. And when you have to fall back in behind, they'll drop back to 45, or maybe even 40 for the hell of it. Next passing zone, rinse repeat.

THAT is the type of driver most southerns are, and why I wouldn't even begin to think of lane splitting. They'd car door you or hit you and not think a thing of it.

We were discussing stop and go traffic. Hard to get away without someone getting your plate number. Like I said, I would be really careful around bikers. I know you think you're a badass, but some of the bikers I've met have been really scary people, and I'll bet they have equally scary friends. Scary people haven't much to loose. You do.

Yep, I've experienced it. Passing a pickup in that situation one time in NC, while riding a sport bike, the SOB swerved across the center line in an attempt to force me off the road. Fortunately I got past before he was over far enough.

I'd seen dickery like this in a whole bunch of states. Thankfully bikes are way faster than cages. I prefer to have these jackholes far back in my rear view mirror. Life is too short to deal with types like this.

So now we have steingars imaginary biker friends beating up edfreds hypothetical door pusher.

Priceless.
Sorry, never had anyone open a door on me. My guess is the cops would take a really dim view of it, since you aren't supposed to open your door while driving, especially on the freeway which is where I did most of my splitting. I've ridden a lot of miles in my life, most on the street. I've met some really unsavory characters on bikes in that time. Says me leave bikers alone. They're like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get.

Yeah, my wife and kids will miss me...oh wait.

First you said you were too fast, now you're talking stop and go traffic, and additionally you're talking about other people taking your place in such an encounter. Which is it?

What I was thinking about is with modern brakes and my bike at 10mph I might be able to brake to a stop before I hit the obstacle. Granted, if you opened your door JUST as I was driving past you'd probably nail me, but I suspect there'd be repercussions. I was encouraging you not to do this because the reaction from the biker might not be what you were expecting. Also, if the biker actually got hurt in the encounter, not only would you be on tap for fixing up his or her hurt but you'd have that on your conscience, which I don't think you'd want. You never struck me as the sort who would cause hurt to someone who'd done you no overt harm.

Since this seems to be the POA motorcycle thread du jour...

Rode a 100 mile loop on my Buell today, taking in the Foothills Parkway near Knoxville:

Exactly one month after my meniscus surgery, knee did fine - the Buell has high pegs, but that’s never bothered me.

And, damn I love that little bike. Bought new in 2003. Hard to believe 17 years have slipped by somehow! Not the fastest not most powerful nor lightest nor most technologically advanced, but it has that “essence” of what a motorcycle should feel and sound like.

For me, anyway.

As an aside, the main impetus of posting the above is to make Half Fast jealous.

It worked!

Friends from Kville riding down tonight. Tomorrow? Suches, 60, 119, RRSH, Wolfpen Gap, $100 burger at TWO, possibly some dirt roads as well.

Here I sit in Florida in July. When it's not sweltering, it's thundering and pouring. And if I could ride, there's no Tail of the Dragon (318 curves in 11 miles) here. Florida has the Tail of the Gator - 11 curves in 318 miles.
