His prop fell off 3 miles from the airport and his windshield was covered in oil. Did pretty well considering

I would guess without a prop that it's going to be a lot harder to bleed off speed which is why he came in hot. No prop and no visibility, kudos to him for surviving.

How about you withhold comments until you know what was going on?

Pilot did a great job considering what he faced.

Crankshaft broke, prop came off airplane about 3 miles from the airport, oil covered windshield.

He could barely see, he knew he was about to hit a gravel berm, chose to dig a wing into the ground to dissipate energy. Since he could not see it he didn’t realize he was too high to dig the wing in.

He flew the airplane all the way to the crash.

Never gave up. This attitude of never giving up saved his life.

Considering the violent conclusion of the flight, the plane held together amazingly well. Anybody know the make/model?

Yep, good points. Guess I will keep my day job of not being a reporter. Glad he survived. I commented on another forum that I wondered if it was mechanical.

Great that you got all the facts so quickly.
 
He did a great job considering the circumstances. From the looks of that thing, it wouldn't have gone nearly as well for him if it had ended up on its back instead of upright. He's extremely lucky in that respect.

Not a lot of options for landing out at that airport, either. If the circumstances stated above are true, he actually did a hell of a job of staying alive.
 
Yeah, this is the kind of pilot we all should aspire to be. Never stop flying the airplane.
