How y'all keeping in shape?

I ran track in HS and college. I’ve been running the same workouts, albeit muuuch slower adjusted for age. Feel great, and added in regular yoga. Although I’m eating more so my weight is up. Gotta go keto again to drop some LBS.

The weather and sunrise time is now helping me, along with adjusting to the new hours. Previously we got up at 4:45 and hit the gym at 5 am when it opened, but then it closed due to COVID. First is was 2 weeks, then more, so harder to make an adjustment when no telling what's happening next. Well, now with the warmer mornings and earlier sunrise I'm riding my bike on the Silver Comet trail (a PATH, rails-to-trails). Of course the section of it near me got closed when the county closed all parks. My riding on it for the past several years would largely qualify for social distancing. That's mostly as riding at 20 mph means I don't want to get near anyone walking or running. One misstep or bobble on their part and it would hurt both of us, so I pass with plenty of space and a call out, "On your left!" So I found it annoying that a 61.5 mile long "park" was closed, just as I was getting back to riding with warmer weather and projects for the new home winding down.

Well now I can hit the trail around 6:30 am (opens at sunrise), although I typically don't get there until 6:40-6:45, and get in a short ride before my 7:45 am call. As I build up the miles I'll probably just stop along the way and do the call. It's just a daily Production Support call, and I rarely have more than "nothing to report" to report.

I need to add running back into my day. The gym is now open, but not until 6 am, so I can get there for some swimming.

I need to get my lazy butt back into triathlon shape, even if just sprint tri's.

Back in the seventies when I was a fairly young man I happened to pick up a used book, which had a Royal Canadian Air Force exercise program designed as a daily exercise regimen (for pilots!) that took only eleven minutes and can be done anywhere. it keeps it there at eleven minutes, but the exercises go from easy, when you are used to it you move up in reps, When you get to the point where you max out in the chart with reps, you move up to a harder exercise and reps go back down.

I remember that book from when I was significantly younger than I am now. At least, I remember what the cover looked like. I'll have to look online and see if I can find it.

In the meantime...

I did about an hour of unintentional abdominal crunches lying on my back removing fuel tank and inspection port screws from my plane for its annual and repairs today. If my arms were six inches longer my abs wouldnt be burning. I guess there's a win in there somewhere.

Dropped the convertible off at the body shop (someone backed into me) and walked home. Only 3 miles, but more than I've done for awhile.

Good for you. It's amazing how often we forget that as an option. Two years ago when I had an appointment to drop off our convertible to have a new top put on, my wife was working and I couldn't find another ride home and was panicking. Didn't have a "smart" phone at the time, don't "uber", too cheap to use cabs..... etc. Then I remembered I had two feet. It was 14 miles home. Enjoyed every step of it.

Sometimes I end up back in areas I used to live, a long time ago. It does surprise me how far I used to walk to get to places back then.

On the other hand, I remember stopping in the town where I lived through 3rd grade to show it to my wife shortly after we graduated from college. I drove right past the street where I had lived as it was much closer to downtown than I remembered. Amazing how distances change between walking when you're in the 3rd grade and when you are driving. :p

For those who are wondering and know the area, that's Davis, CA I'm talking about.

Ah yeah, I know the People's Republic of Davis well. Too bad the Graduate closed down. Sudwerks too, at least the brew house.

The Grad! My wife and all my HS friends went to Davis in late 80's early 90's. I had many of their watered down Long Island Iced Teas!

I haven’t been back to my 3rd grade haunts, just some of my high school and college spots where I had to walk when I couldn’t afford the gas money.

We left Davis during the summer of 1961, so you're a bit younger than us. Our back fence on Miller Drive was pretty much the city limit. Not so much when we swung by in 1975. Construction that was going on when we left had extended the city limits quite a bit to the north by then. Kindergarten in Central Davis elementary (long since torn down, across the street from what was then the high school) and grades 1-3 at North Davis (I believe that I started there when it had just opened).

Time flies...

My gym opened for business about 2 weeks ago, the lap pool opened last week, and I went back this afternoon for the first time since March.

Lanes were limited to an hour, but I knew I wouldn’t make it that long. I quit after 1200 yds and approx 50 min. I had to stop every 200 for a break. I barely made it up the stairs tonight. I am beat. I lost a lot of stamina the last 3 months.

My gym opened yesterday. They have an app reservation system, for one hour, starting at 5:00 a.m. going every 90 minutes, with a limit of 20 spaces per period. No pool, no showers, every other cardio machine is placarded out of service.

Despite Herr Fuhrer's mandatory public mask order, practically nobody except staff wore a mask. And I counted a lot more than 20 people in the gym. I think they are staying longer than their hour. My normal routine is an hour of cardio and about a half hour of weights. Since I had already cycled 20 miles, I did the 6:30 slot and did both day's weights (push day and pull day.) Tomorrow, I'll do another combined weight day, and see how far I can get with cardio.

Saw a lot of peeps from before.

Still doing my YAYOG at home. Now in week two of the intermediate course.

King Jay just announced a statewide requirement for wearing masks in public starting Friday. It will be interesting to see how well his decree is followed.

And before anyone starts lecturing me about how masks save lives, save your breath. I wear one where required. I just get tired of our governor enjoying acting like a dictator. I sure won't vote for him having a third term this fall.

I did a second session at the gym. I managed to squeeze all of my weights in to a 20 minute period, so I was able to get 40 minutes of cardio in before they booted everyone out. It's so nice to have a shower at the office, since I couldn't use the gym's.

...Despite Herr Fuhrer's mandatory public mask order, practically nobody except staff wore a mask...
Our local public servants require businesses to enforce the face mask usage under penalty of revocation of occupancy permit. They’ve set up a hotline to receive complaints...50,000 complaints so far, 126 warnings and 1 rescension. The emergency regulation went into effect two days ago.

I expect, like airport noise complaints, the majority come from one or two industrious busy bodies.

Without making this political - what is the authority of a governor to require that everyone wear masks ? Do they even have that authority?

fair warning - do not turn this political.

I think that the governors doing this are calling it a "public health necessity", and since most of the states are operating under some sort of state of emergency giving the governor any power he needs to combat the "crisis", that is how it is being justified/authorized.

I would like to know why a governor can declare a state of emergency giving himself authority to do anything he wants. That seems counterproductive to all the other attempts to keep the power balances between the branches of government.

I'm not sure about the details - but I think the Legislature has to grant the Executive emergency powers. We had a situation in KS where the Legislature gave the Governor emergency powers, but only for a limited time. When those 30 days (or whatever) were up, there was a bit of a kerfuffle because the Gov still had plans to implement and needed a few extra weeks. The Legislature didn't like those plans anyway so it simply let the emergency powers act expire.

Okay, I went looking. In my state, the governor can declare a state of emergency and do whatever he wants for five days. He can exercise it for 30 days if the Executive Council agrees before the legislature has to vote on whether or not he can keep on being sole manipulator of the controls. That will teach me to make comments on stuff I don't have full information about! :)
