Not that I've seen. I have seen the Nursing home data reported "on"* separately
*(to distinguish "news reporting" vs official reporting)

I just assume that if it were a significant data point, it would show up in the news.

Homeless rarely make the news unless they cause problems for the rest of the population.
Same thing for crime in poor areas, rarely makes the news.
Car accidents outside of rush hour in major metro areas, rarely make the news....

You get the idea, if you are not a paying consumer driving the ads or the ratings. You will only be covered when some story goes viral, which is not often.

Well over a hundred known cases- over a dozen dead. But I’ve tested Probably over a 1000. But I work in medicine-geriatric medicine. Guess it’s all perspective.

Brian Miller, a coworker of mine had it. He posted about it the morning before he went to the ER after struggling with it over the weekend. He went to the ER, they sent him to the hospital and he died 2 weeks later, most of that on a ventilator. His lungs were showing some progress but his kidneys failed and there were other complications. He was 52 but otherwise in great health.

My cousin is an ER nurse, and she got it. She said it was about the same as a cold, but she lost her sense of smell and taste. Fully recovered and back at work.

I know several people who have tested positive for antibodies, and one who has tested positive for the virus. Many were not symptomatic. The guy with the active virus was asymptomatic.

I hate stories like the one I saw a few days ago that announced over 700 positive cases of Chinese virus reported in Wyoming. The article did not mention that 650 of those cases had recovered....

Nope. I have yet to miss a day of work BTW, regular schedule and actually at work and not WFH.

Grandma ended up in nursing home after some strokes which is concerning but shes doing well so far.

The thread title says "Know anyone with Coronavirus?" not "Chinese Virus" ;)

Wouldn't want to confuse it with the "Spanish Flu".....
Putting aside the politics, it seems like sloppy nomenclature to identify a virus with its first reported origin. For one thing the origin may shift as the history of infection is reconstructed. Second, there is non-uniqueness. Is the Chinese virus COVID or SARS? Or we could just start referring to Legionnaire's Disease as "American Bacteria" and Ebola as "Congo Virus".

I don’t know anyone who’s been diagnosed or even tested.

If we're gonna go technical then, it should be COVID-19, to distinguish it from other corona virii. I think a lot of folks are really wrapped around the axle over this whole "politically-correct" name calling BS.

Ebola is already a place name, it's a river in the Congo, near which the earliest outbreaks were reported.

Spain wasn’t the Spanish Flu’s first origin.

The news media was censored from talking about anything that might hurt the war effort in multiple western countries at the time, upon threat of severe fines or forced shutdown.

Spain as a non-combatant had no wartime censorship and therefore the rest of the western press could report on the virus by claiming they were simply reporting on events in Spain.

It’s one of the major reasons we don’t know as much as we could about the 1918 flu. The press was banned from mentioning it for a long time. Large outbreaks in places like a military camp in KS for soldiers being prepped to head overseas were only pieced together by historians finding a few letters written home that got missed by the censors, decades later.

As far as the current one goes, I could care less what we call it. But I’m all for a law that says any “expert” on TV who’s asked a question about it, gets cattle prodded until they learn to say the words, “I don’t know”, instead of floating unproven theories as facts.

I’d pay money to see that on pay-per-view. :)

The only person I know who might have possibly had it, is an employee of ours who thinks he might have contracted it in a voting station in March. Other than that, I don't even know anyone that knows someone that had it.

COVID-19 is what the medical community calls it and is what I prefer to call it. I couldn't give a toss about it being politically correct or not. When you get a test, do they use a chinese virus test kit or a covid-19 test kit?

My roommate had it, said it was nothing worse than a mild flu. I was with him for the past three days before he tested positive. I never had symptoms, I plan on getting an anti-body test because I’m curious. If it’s as contagious as they say, then I’d be shocked if I didn’t test positive for the anti-bodies since I was with him leading up to his symptoms.

Although I wouldn't pay money to watch, I definitely could get behind the idea of holding so-called "experts" accountable for spreading fake news. That's why I like websites like factcheck.org and mediabiasfactcheck.com.

Of course, all my more politically polarized friends seem to just roll their eyes when the get called out on their crap.

Not only that but China is quite a big place. We already know where in China it started so if you insist on using the place of origin, at the very least least call it the Wuhan virus or Hubei virus.

More fun if the pundits got called out.

Not really. Pundits pretend to be experts. There is a really fascinating book called the Death of Expertise. Definitely worth a read.
One thing a lot of people forget, most experts say based on history we know X. We think Y may be possible.
Last point, a fair number of experts are now compromised material. They are now often constrained by their employers.

Tim

Maybe.

One guy thought he had it, bud the antibody test showed negative. Two more seem to have had more of the symptoms, including fever and losing sense of smell and taste, but haven't had the antibody test yet. They were told to quarantine, but no testing was done when they had the symptoms.

The nursing home called me a couple of weeks ago and told me my mother had it. As a matter of fact, on a floor of about 50 people, 10 DIDN'T have it.

She just turned 92 in March and doesn't really have any underlying conditions, and so far showing no symptoms.

Several of my coworkers relatives and at least one persons from our EAA chapter tested positive for COVID-19. The grandma of one coworker passed away...

Then we had several suspected cases at work but none of them were tested. That was Mid-March.

One of the ebola variants is known as 'ebola zaire' one as 'tai forest virus'.
Naming it 'HCV-Wuhan' would have been perfectly consistent with the traditional nomenclature. But then, there were cases in France before the chinese fessed up, so had it been isolated in France first it could have been misnamed as 'HCV-Paris'.

”now”?

Was there a magical time when unicorns roamed the earth that this wasn’t true?
Yes, for the most part. Read the book, you will see how as a country we have really denigrated experts starting after WW2, and if you look at the lessons in the book. Experts have been largely ignored by pundits and leaders in the last decade.

My wife's employer just notified everyone that works in her building that someone there has tested positive.

Probably will. That “leaders” do it isn’t surprising. There have not been any in government in my lifetime. Only politicians.

I’ve worked for a number of leaders in the private sector who do listen to their experts. Specifically hire them TO listen to them.

So I assume by “leaders” the book means “government”?

The problem I’ll have reading it is that nobody in my generation will be able to fix that. Same politicians have been there since before I could vote, and aren’t apparently going to leave before they die. Botox night of the living dead.

Most have nothing to go home to retire to anyway. So I get that. Their families want little to do with them and their kids learned nothing but corruption and it shows.

@denverpilot
Pretty much social leaders. So government, media, pundits, religious....

I think the only thing that makes those guys "leaders" is that people follow them. As long as someone has enough charisma, people are going to follow, whether or not they actually have the necessary qualifications to be a leader (like listening to people who know better...).

Makes sense then.

Never really considered any of them leaders anyway, nor have many in my age group. Just people who lie for a living.

I sure as hell wouldn’t follow any of them.

If you look to pro liars for morals or expertise, you’re probably going to have a bad day.

Reading old news and historical documents, I don’t see a time frame where experts are ever valued unless they supported their lies, though.

Book might be interesting just to see when the author thinks this change supposedly occurred.

I’m sure Caesar kept some helpful experts on staff. LOL.

Galileo wasn’t exactly liked much either. The pundits and politicians of his day wanted him beheaded.

Etc. Not really new.

I suppose the book might be an eye opener for anybody who doesn’t read history... :)

I'm pretty sure that being willing to listen to good people who tell you things you don't want to hear is wisdom. It certainly can save a lot pain.

Yes, a few. The scariest one is a guy who is younger and in better shape than I am with no underlying health conditions that ended up in the hospital for several days.

I've tested twice - The active and the antibody - And was negative both times.

I don't have it. Nobody I know has it. Nobody THEY know has it.

I found out yesterday that one of our local pilots died from it a month or so ago.
