Aviation Handheld Radio Recommendation

Hello,

I'm a new pilot, Looking to purchase a purchase a back up Radio to carry in my fight bag.

I've been trying to do some research different Brand and models .

I was wondering if any of you, could recommend in Brands and models that you've experienced.

I'm really looking for a com radio primarily.

I'd also listen to it at home, while on ground I'm approximately 4-5 Nm north of the airport.

I understand that I probably won't get very good reception, being on the ground and being this far out.

I've been looking at ebay/ craigslist and marketplace for a used good condition one for sale.

Please reply back with your recommendation. Also
 
I hate to be “that guy”, but do a search on here, there are tons of threads on the subject.
 
This comes up a lot as a topic. Any Yaesu is excellent. Some like the latest Sporty’s radio with direct plug-in for an aviation headset instead the adapter cable that comes with the Yaesu’s.

I have the basic bottom end Yaesu and like like it.

I'm considering purchasing the Yaesu FTA-550 AA

I have the basic bottom end Yaesu and like like it.

There aren’t too many brands out there, and they all work well. It comes down to personal preference.
 
I can't point to a particular model or brand since it's been many years since I've had a look at what's available. I have an Icom, forget the model...must be 20 years old now. It's one of the little ones with VOR cabability. It's a really nicely made radio and works great, although I've rarely ever used it.

I can make a suggestion to you though.

Look for something simple. I wish mine was just dial a frequency dumb simple. Maybe a hot key for 121.5, and that's it. It has so many memory modes, scan modes, etc. that I seriously need to pull out the manual to use the thing. That's no good in an emergency when you need it.

In fact now that I'm thinking about it I should sell mine to someone interested in it's capability and buy something more fitting to my need.
 
I currently have a King KX-99 with the headset jacks. Works good and I have an alkaline battery pack for it. Rechargeable are nice, but not necessarily for this type of application. I have considered selling it and possibly purchasing one of the Sporty handhelds.
