The “what I did during quarantine” thread

I make a trip across town 2x per year to buy non ethanol gas for all the small and infrequent engines (includes the i3). I then treat with Stabil and use it over the next few months. It really helps

Same here... Though I wish it was only 2x per year! In the summer, it's 2x/month. And "across town" is to a nearby (25-30 min away) GA airport because it's the only place in the county that can legally sell ethanol-free mogas. :D

You probably will treat the Cobra a bit better. I don't wash my truck outside nearly as much as I should, but I would treat a car much differently.

Oh, maybe true. Our motorcycles are extremely dusty and the one time I've taken mine out in the past two years, I rode it to work, dust and all.

you could have the kids do a wash and wax party as an activity to burn off some energy

Actually, we just got inside from the kids doing exactly that on the Mercedes and the Jag. The Ram is still dirty...

that's got a lot of area...

It was also parked directly in front of the garage with the doors open.

But we do plan on cleaning it out today. Might even pull the motorcycles out and get the past couple years worth of dust off of them.

Learned how to true up bicycle wheels. Started regular rides with my family. I see a lot of people out riding bikes and spending time with their families [in their front yards]. I can drive to the grocery store without sitting in traffic. Night time is more quiet. Reminds me of how my town was 20 years ago when I moved here.

Maybe this isn't such a bad thing.

Howdy,

Inside the huge roof:
2m/70cm J-Pole for local FM comms. I live about a mile from our repeaters.
6m horizontal dipole made from two stainless steel whips with a center mount.
10-40m hexbeam. Might go on the roof due to its size.

Outside: 20-160m fan dipole for DX and NVIS
Possible DMR repeater, if I win the Bridgecomsystems.com contest.

Waiting for a location:
10-80m homebrew magnetic loop made from 3/4 inch copper pipe.

I'm getting itchy to use my new Xiegu G90 HF rig and do some digital modes!

Sounds like fun. I need to find a place to put my old Cushcraft R7 up and then run the coax to it. I've been running a random length, end fed wire for over 25 years and really need to change that. HOA covenants only deal with roof mounted antennas, so as long as the XYL is happy (tougher than any HOA) I'll be set.

You guys are making me think I should clean my vehicles more often than "When the rain washes the dirt off".

That's how often my Jeep gets washed. Of course, we do get a fair amount of rain in these parts. :p

Yep. I finally broke down and took the TJ to the self-serve carwash place last fall when the remnants of last spring's pollen were embedded under the edges of the hood. Had a good hard rain shower with 70mph winds yesterday, so it should be good through summer now. :)

Learned how to true up bicycle wheels.
Years ago when I bought my first spoke wrench, the bike shop owner said, “we could sell a lot of new wheels if we gave one of these away with every bicycle.” ;)

FWIW, the bike shop I use had to petition the county to stay open as an essential service provider. Good thing...I needed to buy parts today.

Yeah, I'd imagine someone could get a wheel out of round pretty quickly torquing on spokes with no training on proper method. I don't ride my MTB fast enough on the trails to where I'd likely know if the spokes needed attention anyway.

That’s basically what every business is doing, which of course defeats the purpose of having a quarantine in the first place.

That said I did order a new gear cassette from Amazon and fixed my bicycle a week or two ago.

:yeahthat:

I had to drive into Orlando yesterday for a doctor appt (annual checkup). Driving through town, it appeared to me that the only non-essentials are restaurants, barbershops, and churches. Mostly everything else is open.

2003. Had to put the hardtop back on it a couple months ago as the seams were starting to pop on the soft top. Haven't had the hard top on since we moved to this house in 2012. I'll be keeping an eye out for sales on a new soft top this summer, though it is noticeably quieter with the hardtop on.

I have the dual top option, as well. Haven't had the soft top on in years. I don't have a place to store the hard top when it is off. Too bad you are so far away, we could arrange something.

You know softtop can be mailed...
Or you know you could each fly half way. An excuse to go flying...

Learned how to true up bicycle wheels...

One of the most major epiphanies of my life was realizing that humans can actually figure out how to lace up a spoked wheel! When I was in 7th grade, I has a "mishap" on my 10-speed and was forced to learn how to rebuild a wheel with a new rim and spokes. From that point on, I was not afraid to take stuff apart that was both really complicated and expensive!

From there, I went on to diagnosing and repairing televisions and radios. That pretty much ruined me for life.

Then I became a pilot and most of that stuff fell by the wayside. I don't fly commercially or military any more, so now I am back into that stuff and I once again have no free time!

RE: Lawn mowing requiring a chain saw, one of my relatives has some acreage, and different parts are on different mowing schedules. There is probably at least 5 acres where the mowing frequency is around once every 8-16 months, and any pine tree less than 4 feet tall, that is not marked to be kept is a simple weed. Depending on girth, and what implement is on the 3 point, it usually just gets mowed over without much thought.

That said, there is another 10 acres that haven’t been mowed in 5 years currently. I probably will take a chain saw, or at least a DR field and brush mower for some of the stuff there, next time I do mow it.

I am recapping my old guitar amps and looking at IFR study courses to keep busy between lawn mowing chores.

The local mulch place has a good social distancing policy. Drive your truck up, phone in your order and credit card number, they bring a front end loader out and load it in your truck. One man to one loader. So we got a few truck loads of mulch and a truck load of sand to do some mulching and refill the kids' sandbox. Spring beautification of the property complete.

Also did some work with the brush hog yesterday to clear out a few more areas in preparation for bulldozing work. It's pretty exciting to see the runway coming together. I have the current trees marked that I have to remove, although I'm pretty sure I'll need to do some others to widen things in a few areas once the initial runway is complete. Making progress...

He's in Washington state and I'm in Georgia - that would be a heckuva xc for a Jeep soft top.

It's usually not bad. List price on most of the sail cloth tops is around $200-600. Should be able to get something on sale cheaper.

Few years ago... I guess 4 now... I took a 90s Wrangler on trade with a soft top. Thing had a 4-cylinder. I should've kept it, traded it for an F-250 with a 7.3 that had a dead cylinder. Oh well. Anyway, the soft top on it was older and not in the best shape, but I remember looking and seeing similar to you - things were chepa.

The point was a fun trip! Not to worry about the cloth top...

Still working around the clock. Someone has to keep the bridges and tunnels open between NY and NJ, to provide the supply trucks, medical staff, fire trucks, LEO and other essential vehicles with safe passage underneath the Hudson River.

I'm practicing 'Social Distancing' as much as possible and when I'm not training one of our two new guys, I usually work alone (as seen in this picture:D).

SCR.jpg
Supervisory Control Room, showing 13.8kV switchgear controls, Ventilation fan controls, fire standpipe controls, CO recorders/printers, electrical one-line diagram, representing (13.8kV, 480/277V 3-phase) and traffic lights mimic buses.

OK, this picture is actually from the late 60's or early 70's. Most of our systems are on computer displays and touchscreens, which I can't show. The desk area is different/newer, but the control board is still up, although most of the knobs and controls have been removed. The mimic bus back lighting is mostly no longer working. All of that is now displayed on PC screens, as well as the circuit breaker switching and fan speed settings, etc.

All week it's been really weird seeing only a handfull of vehicles throughout the night, when there are usually hundreds.. Literally a ghost town!

Our PATH trains are still up and running as well. I haven't been on one in a few years, but they are just as vital during this time.

It all started while cleaning the shop and decided to stop an play one of my Guitars I keep cased in the shop. Sort of got out of hand and now it's a daily diversion for many of my fans.
No flying as I haven't soloed yet and instructor is not wanting to take a chance. He is the airport manager at KSBX but was still allowing visitors in office . (At a distance last week)
I have lots of space to roam and on the nice days drive out about the farm shooting gophers .
The Senior center is putting out meals to go so it makes tending the cooking chores better.

Mine has the 4 liter I-6 engine. Nearly 192,000 miles on it. Bulletproof motor. Yeah, it would be fun, but even a cross state trip in that Jeep is rougher than I really want to do anymore. Halfway across the country just isn't going to happen.

Right before we moved from Iowa to Georgia, my wife and I drove the TJ from central Iowa to Estes Park, CO. It has a 4" lift and at that time had 33x12.50 Mud Terrain tires - now I'm running aggressive All-Terrains. That was about 12 hrs one-way. It was fun at the time, and I'm glad we have that story to tell, but I don't think I would want to do it again.

Funny thing is, most of those drives I've done... I would completely do again.

I look out at the 2000 XKR we now have, and think how, in a lot of ways, I miss that old '82 XJ-S.

Don't get me wrong - I still like long drives, just not in a lifted Jeep with MT tires trying to do 80+MPH down the interstate. :)

My dad and I did a non-stop 25hr drive from Gillette, WY to Des Moines, IA to home (south of Atlanta) last fall, but that was in a 2017 Dodge Ram to Iowa and then a Nissan Armada the rest of the way, so a bit better ride quality than the Jeep. And Lord willing, we'll do a similar trip this fall back out to WY.

I'm also talking about long drives in vehicles of varying poor to drive characteristics, like my Kenworth. :)

So, would you do the "bring the Kenworth home from Wisconsin" saga again? ;)

It was Iowa, not Wisconsin. There was a double-bunk sleeper Pete 352 in Wisconsin that I was interested in, but the guy sold it locally before I could get it.

I figured that question would come up. I learned a lot from that truck and the whole experience. Probably the biggest thing I now realize is that I wouldn't have bought that particular truck. But that's the whole hindsight thing and stuff like putting a bearing where the inner race diameter is 1/4" larger than the spindle diameter doesn't happen often.

Would I buy a semi (or bus, or something else large - like a 5-ton military truck) from a distance away and drive it home again? Yes, I would. :)

She said I could do my bathroom however I wanted.

The color is called chocolate sauce.

Should cover up any evidence of taco night extremely well.

I checked all the upcoming software updates that April software vendor screwery shall bring to our working from home masses, seemed all quite mellow, and sent the company wide “Don’t Panic, it all starts Monday night” email.

If anything, software vendors will think hard about releasing their usual level of garbage code for a while.

I also joked that since the staff stole my desk phone, they can’t call me for help. Ha.

Nah. Just gave them my cell again. They never call anyway. They could be on fire and they’d still text message. :)

Counsel for "Critical Industry," never been busier. Skeleton crew at the office, most working from home, which is working better than I had hoped. Getting very wary, because I've been doing the 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM gig, and I'm getting a little old for that stuff.

Lots of ideas for projects I'd do if I was stuck at home, but not stuck yet.

Oh, and Covid 19 notwithstanding, DPD is still writing speeding tickets. Ask me how I know!

They've got a lot of revenue to try and make up with a smaller volume of traffic!
