When these units were first announced, I pre-ordered two units with a $200 deposit. Subsequent announcements indicated they are just waiting for the FAA approval process to be complete. I saw that Aircraft Spruce is advertising that the experimental units will ship on 12/31.

I looked at the certified page and saw they are listing a 1/16 shipping date. I just wondered if anyone has heard an update on the certified unit shipping date other than this info on the Aircraft Spruce website?

The only news is the Aircraft Spruce site. I hope it's true they are shipping certified units in January!

Looks promising. But unlike the G5, does not yet support a remote magnetometer or have GPSS roll steering for legacy autipilots. Use as standalone instruments is as of now not yet approved, although Uavionix claims you can remove you vac system via 337 if desired.

I’ll be buying one to replace my AI and take out my vac

My club is looking into a pair of these as well to get rid of the vac system in our plane.

Well 1/16 has come and gone and there's no indication they're shipping.

Only thing is a FAQ item on the AV-30 Experimental page:

I emailed them three weeks ago with some purchase questions and they didn't reply. That's frequently a bad sign.

And that is why its worth spending the extra money to buy something from Garmin.
Or simply wait, and continue for a time with your vacuum guages.

This is from the website (It's under the SUPPORT FAQ section for the AV30)

"The AV-30-C is undergoing certification via the AMOC AML-STC process. This is a new risk-based certification methodology that is being supported for Part 23 Class I and Class II Aircraft. We expect to complete this certification by the beginning of Q2 2020."

I'm sure they are hoping for Sun N Fun, Aerovonics had been very good with their cert estimates on the AV20. I'm of the opinion that the FAA has gotten much more cautious of approving anything after the Max issues. Unfortunately, this can be a safety enhancement for many that gets unnecessarily delayed.

Thanks for posting that update. I hesitate to guess how much lead time my avionics shop is going to need to get these installed. They seem to be swamped.....

They have an interesting product coming down the way that will eliminate the need for a panel mount (i.e. conventional) transponder.

You read it here first.

How long does the backup battery run on the AV-30? The G5s are rated for 4 hours, ample time to resolve an emergency. A Grumman Gang pilot just shared an experience of a total electrical failure in a dual G5 equipped airplane. The G5s showed a countdown timer for battery power that was in excess of 4 hours when the power went out, and the HSI continued to operate, albeit without input from the magnetometer, which has no emergency power. That kind of performance is comforting in IMC.

I passed on the Aspen E5 because of its backup battery life (rated at 0.5 hr) and the fact it is not two separate units. Do your homework when choosing gyro replacements. The AV-30 may be for you, or not, depending on your requirements.

welcoming options other than the garmin borg. I have 4 pre-ordered for 2 planes.

I've been burned more than once with Aircraft Spruce expect ship dates, I think they are just a computer generated guess. Last time I ordered some Goodyear II tires and when it got close to expect ship date, it'd back off 2 more weeks. After the 3rd change in their expect ship date (another 2 weeks), I called and was told it would be more like 6 weeks. Cancelled, called Desser and had them in 2 days.

I agree with G5 guys who tout the 2nd G5 as backup whereas the E5 is a single unit. I think the solution is to add either an AV20s or AV30 to the panel if that's a concern. Garmin products always seem to need additional communication boxes to get full features so it probably wouldn't cost much more to do so.

You want to buy from a business that does not bother to reply when you inquire on their products?
I emailed uAvionix about 6 times while awaiting certification of their skyBeacon and tailBeacon. They responded to every one. I pre-ordered a tailBeacon about a month before they expected certification, and received it on time and in time to install before the mandate went into effect.

I would not hesitate to buy another uAvionix product, and am looking forward to certification of the AV-30.

I'm planning on using this and an Electronics International CGR-30C as the two primary instruments on a new panel in my Luscombe. Already have the CGR-30C along with sensors and probes. Just waiting for this one before starting the new panel build.

And now it's May 18. Guess somebody doesn't have confidence they'll make it to Sun 'n Fun.

I've been waiting for them to get the skyLight approved to match the skyBeacon on the left wing. That also keeps slipping. I wonder if the production slowdown in China is impacting their delivery/approval schedule?

I wouldn’t put any faith in that number at all. I ordered something from Spruce last year and was notified it was on back order after the fact. After a few days I checked on it and it said the ship date was still estimated to be a month away. So the next morning I called to order an alternative product instead and was informed it was already in stock and ready to ship. I think that number you guys are looking at is totally computer-generated and has little relevant data.

At this point, my biggest complaint is their ****ty customer service. I tried to pre-order the AV-30, but their order page was broken, so I called them to pay over the phone. The guy said someone else had called with the same problem. Then, he told me he couldn't take my payment because he would just use the same page to enter my info. He didn't say he would let their IT department know about the problem. He said just to keep trying. I kept trying over the following week, but it was still broken. So, I sent them a follow-up e-mail and never heard back. I sent them another e-mail complaining about their customer service and never heard back. They certainly don't seem all that interested in taking my money.

The AV-30 certified is now shipping!

Their website still has a "pre-order" button, and Aircraft Spruce's website says it's expected to ship May 18th. Who's shipping it?

Arrgh! My bad, Both Chief and uAvionix make it appear the unit is shipping until you get into the ordering process. That's a little lame.

Sun-n-Not-Fun is next week. Maybe then?

You can still install it. We have had quite the debate on here on if its a major alteration or minor. I went the major route and got a field approval for the sky sensor. Some guys I know are just installing them as a minor but its up to you.

Therein is the problem, I'm having a bit of a challenge finding someone that is willing to do an install either way.
