Toilet Paper

I don't even care about the lack of TP in the stores. I have enough to last a few month under current use and I have a shower next to the toilet with a detachable head. Priorities aren't something most people tend to pay attention to. Hell, the line in front of the drinking water dispenser was insane. Tap water is perfectly fine. You pay for it, drink it.
I'm still seeing pallets of bottled water stacked around the store. Some days it's there, and a few days later they are gone so it seems people are still stocking up on those.

I still find the whole TP thing funny. My local stores were out just for a weekend. I wonder what the differences are based on area.
Could it be New England has small houses with little storage space. Or just the number of people? Or luck? Or random timing that many people had already stocked up?

Tim

Kind of depends on where you live. In some cities, I wouldn't drink the tap water if you paid me, lol.

Something I learned in the Army while stationed in an unnamed Asian location:

Coffee filters work as an emergency substitute for TP.

Word.

Just got in from Walmart. We got everything on our shopping list, including TP. Put only one package per customer. So I sent my wife through first, then I followed and got a package. At the checkout lane I went through first and paid for my TP. My wife was behind me with a full cart of groceries.

After I paid for my TP, I put it on the bottom shelf of my wife's cart, then started loading the belt with the groceries from her cart. Then paid for that full cart. The cashier never even looked at the second package of TP.

Which brings up the question: With TP in such a shortage, why are folks panic buying ExLax.???

My wife did find one 25 pound bag of rice. It must have been the very last bag of rice in town. We are now up to 105 pounds of rice. She is still worried that we don't have enough rice.....

If I said to employ used coffee filters with the grounds still present, it would start a fad and all the weak minded you-know-whos would rush to the store and buy them all out.

Fargin hippies...

Wasn't coffee enemas popular at one time for those type of folks.?? And did they add cream and sugar.??

Went to Publix noonish today. The store was not too awfully crowded, so I had hope. The produce section was filled like normal, anything they would normally have, they had. Fresh meat was very depleted. I did find a nice slab of St. Louis cut ribs, so that's what's for dinner tomorrow. The seafood counter also had everything it usually has, so I got some fish for tonight, since it's Lent and my wife is a practicing Catholic, plus some chicken tenders and potato wedges for daughter #2, who will not eat seafood.

Still no TP, paper towels, tissues, pasta, pancake mix, or rice. Now they're out of flour as well, I guess either everyone decided to do some baking, or at least thinks they will. Dairy section looked mostly good, some of the myriad of yogurts that grocery stores now have were not in stock, but most everything else was there, except butter, no butter at all. Eggs, no problem, plenty of those. The freezer section was a little picked over but you can get most of what you want.

I may stick my nose into Costco on Sunday morning. We're running low on chicken and that's where we usually get it.

We ran out of flour and my wife needed some a couple days ago. Every major store was out. Found a couple 5 pound bags in a convenience store. Paid through the nose for a couple, but we're set for a while now. Still OK for now on TP and paper towels, too. This whole thing is getting silly.

Funny, there was plenty of flour on the shelves today at the local Safeway. I needed some for white sauce. I guess I had been without for... years, because I couldn't find any in my own cupboard. I guess people don't bake around here. I think it just depends when they stock certain items. Plenty of produce, not much dairy. They even had canisters of hand wipes.

When I saw TP on the shelves this morning I realized that's the first time in 2 weeks that I've seen any in the wild.
Costco (colorado) on Wednesday was pretty well stocked on Charmin, some paper towels, no kleenex. Potatoes are an item that goes fast, too - costco and the grocery stores.

WinCo in Denton was pretty well stocked of the major items with the following exceptions

TP and paper towels
Jif peanut butter (all other brands present, no Jif)
Butter
Some of the prepared sliced meats
A few brands/types pet foods.

For a medium sized town, we have about 15 major grocery store installations and a few minor ones.

Stay at home order is in effect, but going to grocery store and a few other errands allowed

Went to Wally World tonight for a few necessities - milk, Diet Coke, hairbrush, mousetraps. TP was in stock, pretty good supply - good to see at the very end of the day (store was closing in 15 minutes when we arrived).

It's hit or miss, some stores have some items, and other stores don't. I don't get why people are hoarding TP, it's a respiratory illness, not a GI tract one.

Worst case, I learn to crochet real fast.

tiny remote town west Texas.
No paper products in any three nearest towns for 2 weeks.
No water jugs or bottles.
No beans.

You certainly can use a humorous nickname, but doing so is political. Hey, that's better than last time when doing so was racist. So, things are improving. ;)

Yeah, a more accurate colloquial name would be Wuhan virus. The names are generally more specific on the location, but not always, such as MERS.
Aside from the politics, my understanding is that it's not uncommon for new viruses to come from China, so calling it "China virus" is too non-specific to be useful in the long run. But that objection doesn't have anything to do with politics, and therefore would not be worth fighting over. ;)

It may not matter for you, but the Pope has given dispensation for eating meat on Fridays this year. We have enough going on.

You know I didn’t figure on giving up this much for Lent.

Make sure you're getting your vitamin K somewhere, cause you ain't getting any from your apocalyptic rice diet. :D

We can't find flour in our neck of the woods.

That surprises me since I think that most around here don’t know how to bake.

I asked about TP as when I went to replace the empty roll there were only 3 rolls in the closet. My darling said, don't worry, and showed me where she stores the unopened packs.

We got our normal big brick of TP from BJs just before the rush started, so we're good for a few months at least.

I've been told that if I want more, I need to place an order online for store pickup. They will hold that, but otherwise it gets put out when it comes in and usually the pallet gets emptied before it makes it to the shelf.

Not only that, but unless you have a family of 12 or are operating an Air B&B, going out and buying a 25 lb bag of rice when you already have 80 lbs in your pantry qualifies as hoarding in my book. What do you (@Zeldman) think would happen if everyone did that? Oh wait! Lots of people ARE doing it, and that's why the 25 lb bag you bought was the last one in town.

There is NO reason why there should be a shortage of anything at this point, EXCEPT for the fact that people are doing exactly this.

Did I mention my wife is Asian? 100 pounds of rice is normal here....:lol:

And you are correct on that. Sheer panic buying due to fear of being afraid.

I really don't know what you guys are talking about...

in the White House daily briefing, our Cheeto in Chief just said Americans are seeing very few empty shelves in Walmart because of everything that he's done.

...not making a political comment, just reporting the news...
So "Cheeto in Chief" isn't making a political comment? OK. If that's the bar, I"m good.

25lb? That's just a small bag. Regular size is 50lb. :)

If you read the subsequent posts, I thought I was making a public service announcement about what was not welcomed here and issued a public warning, so no, you are not good. Many subsequent posts of this nature caused the posters to receive actual warnings with points, and some are in quarantine.

You are right. I didn't read all the subsequent posts before I replied.
I apologize, and I recognize that you are trying to be be fair to both sides in you admonishments.

It's almost like Amazon's packaging is trying to encourage porch theft. I guess I should have asked for the gift wrap option.

Recycle the box back to your porch, but this time, fill with an unliftable amount of weight. Position a camera to catch the pirates in action.

Or dead animals or any old junk from your garage that you want to get rid of. If you make it too heavy it might be funny to watch, but they probably won't take it.

That’s right, most of us are in real quarantine without having to post anything! My family is over 200 hundred safe miles away while I’m facing/working the front lines in South Florida. Politics, partisan or not just seems to suck these days and it’s amazing the divide that it’s caused between friends, families, and pilots that should never have risen to the levels that exist today. I guess it’s appropriate that politicians were a recurring theme in a lack of toilet paper

Shopping day for me today. I started out at Costco. As of late, chicken has been in short supply. Georgia is the largest producer of broilers in the U. S, producing 15% of the entire country's production, so for us to run out of chicken would be like Texas running out of oil. Nonethess, no chicken at Costco, and no TP either. They did have paper towels, so I got my normal dozen. They also had 25 pound bags of rice, so clearly Mrs @Zeldman had not been there. ;)
I don't usually buy rice at Costco and I didn't buy it there today, we don't eat that much of it, but seeing in stock is a positive sign. Costco does have some new policies to keep things from getting too crowded, and the cashiers now have a sneezeguard. Costco being as they are, they have things very well organized and the policies are clear. One thing I did that was kind of hoardish was to get two 10 pound bags of my daughter's favorite pancake mix. It's one of those items they sometimes have and sometimes don't, which is why I got two. She's been known to go through a two pound box in a couple of weeks, so that might do it for us until midsummer.

I wound up going two two Publixes, a Kroger, and Home Depot. Kroger had chicken, and also pasta, which had been scarce as well. The second Publix had two pound bags of rice, so I got of those. All of these places had beef, so we're having steak and potatoes tomorrow. None of them have TP. None of them have Boston butts either. My neighbor, who works on the MacGyver show is furloughed, and we've both been commiserating about being locked out of barbecuing.

I'm waiting to hear a news story about a family whose house catches on fire because their TP hoard got too close to an appliance and set the house on fire. It would serve the dingleberries right.

Also very ironic is that of the four of us in the house, the three who are stuck here would rather be at school or the office, and the one who has to go into work is the one who would like to stay home. My wife was checking the patient census at the hospital system where she works, and the number of Covid-19 patients is becoming fearsome, particularly those in ICU.

You'd think the hoarders would run out of storage space one of these days.

I ended up at Costco yesterday morning as well, although somewhat unintended. I realized I hadn’t replenished my yard machines/generator gas supply and Costco Unleaded is $1.49 here.
Gassed up and noticed the parking lot was pretty sparsely populated so took a chance and went in. Walked right in without waiting. Got a pkg of TP and 1 of paper towels because it was time to buy, not because I’m afraid of running out. No Kleenex tissues tho. I got our normal Costco stuff and didn’t notice any shortage of anything. Some store rearrangement to pile up many more pallets of bottled water than normal, and employees handing out the limited items, requested spacing at the registers and wipe down of the belts between each customer.
Beef was plentiful, but we just bought a steer and will split with the kids, should be ready next week. Since my high school friend sold his buffalo herd a couple of years ago, I still haven’t found a reliable source to buy whole buffalo. Really missing that.
