Continuing our simulator adventures while sheltering, we do some instrument work -- as suggested by Carlo Felicione and admittedly much needed on my part -- while in IMC around Aspen CO (KASE). In this part 1 video we fly an instrument departure northwest bound and an ad-hoc hold, to be followed in subsequent videos with a localizer approach with published missed, and a GPS approach to land. My first time e-flying a DA62… a learning experience in a very cool aircraft. I’m sincerely keen to gather your comments on areas for improvement.

Thanks for your insight and enjoy the video!

I’d have done a teardrop entry into the hold instead of a parallel.

Luvflyin... in retrospect, I agree... a teardrop would have been a bit less hectic than the parallel.
Nice point... thanks for watching!

Looks like you drew your own hold? Have you given thought to the D-> OBS mode to let the G1000 draw the hold for you?

asicer... I drew the hold on the ForeFlight map just for my visual benefit (for the side and entry)... during the actual flight I did put the G1000 in OBS mode and used the HDG bug to fly. I kept the autopilot in HDG mode, even on the inbound leg when I could have gone to NAV mode. Maybe I'm missing something else I could have done?

On a related point, the latest D62s might have the G1000 update that automagically does ad-hoc holds... but my DA40/G1000 software level doesn't have that function.
Thanks for watching!

If the G1000 drew the hold, the GFC autopilot would have been able to fly it for you. Or you can lean on the flight director to let you know how you're doing.

Cool... I'm going to give that a shot on the DA62/X-Plane.
Thanks,
Wayne

As a rule, I don’t do parallel entries unless the automation does it all for me...to me, it’s like the old Certs commercials... “two, two, two entries in one”. ;)
