Toilet Paper

I never looked. But can you buy liquid egg in the supermarket ? For things like omelettes and baking, having the egg already cracked would cut down the work.

How do you preserve liquid egg against spoilage ? Do you irradiate it ?

I'd imagine that restaurants that use whole in shell eggs probably get them in the 30 egg flats or similar.
regardless, it seems to me that they could just redirect the large qty flats to retail. Either the stores could split the packaging or customers could bring in their empties....or just sell in lots of 30 or whatever....

Answered above. Many regulatory and technical hurdles. We have food safety regulations, animal welfare certifications, and transport logistics. Packaging has to be approved by USDA. SKUs have to be created and bar coding added so POS works.

If you guys understood what is required on the food safety front for retail you’d see the problem more clearly. Those regs are completely different than for liquid eggs that will have a pasteurization step. It’s even different federal agencies that regulate the products. USDA AMS for shell eggs and FSIS for egg products. Get that compliance piece wrong and I could go to jail, or get somebody sick and be liable for millions.

Certainly, and they’re great products too. I keep quart cartons in my fridge because it is so convenient.

The eggs are ultra pasteurized with ESL technology and packaged in a modified atmosphere fill/seal system for gable top cartons.

Consumers don’t want irradiated even though it is a good, safe system.

Sunday morning at 7am, north Hyvee no TP and only a few dozen eggs left. Plenty of bacon tho.

ConAgra has a consumer liquid egg brand. The factory is in St Louis.

@James_Dean

Interesting. I did not realize that much of the egg industry was focused outside home/retail. Makes sense when you think about it.
Good luck!

And we just finished our regular large monthly run. I did not think about liquefied eggs; that with a little better planning could potentially help us decrease the number of trips we need to make.

When I was at the store a few days ago the liquid egg cartons were the only eggs still on the shelves. I’m going to have to keep an eye on those in another week or so when we start running out.

I went to the store(s) today. I started off at our local Publix, they had everything I needed other than rice, but no TP or paper towels. I went to our local SuperTarget (one with a grocery store), the power was off. It's being remodeled, so I think that had something to do with it, everything around that store had power. Next, I tried Fresh Market, got a bag of basmati rice, but it's expensive. I tried another Publix, no rice, no TP, then a Kroger, no rice, no TP, but they did have some spaghetti, so I got that.

So now, there's plenty of produce in these stores, but fresh meat is a little spotty. Eggs are fairly available, most stores have a decent supply. Rice, dry beans, and pasta are fairly scarce. but there's plenty of spaghetti sauce on the shelves. We needed ketchup, I bought French's brand because our normal Heinz wasn't in the store where I started.

Since I'm home all day, I'd like to make pulled pork, but I haven't seen a Boston butt since this hoarding thing started.

I wonder how many people bought a bag of dried beans, and will ultimately wind up throwing it out when they move because they really have no interest in cooking them.

Are you experiencing a BBQ meat shortage yet?

really? you can't use a humorous nickname for a politician here. I'll make note of that.

a simple descriptor of his skin color has nothing to do with what he said. besides, he continues to use the term "Chinese virus" and continued to do so this morning...even though that's not the name for it. is that disparaging on his part? most people here think it's not. and are openly talking about it... is that not political? or is the only thing that is political is something you don't agree with?

You certainly can use a humorous nickname, but doing so is political. Hey, that's better than last time when doing so was racist. So, things are improving. ;)

Yeah, a more accurate colloquial name would be Wuhan virus. The names are generally more specific on the location, but not always, such as MERS.

I get my stuff from Sam’s. I might check sometime next week. I am still planning to cook a couple butts and briskets in a few weeks so I hope there’s a supply by then. A buddy has an account with Sysco for his restaurant, so I may be able to get stocked that way. Since restaurants are shut down except for carry out, I don’t know what Sysco or other suppliers are going to do with all their stock.

Last week was toilet paper and bottled water.

This week its rice and eggs and biscuits...

The local Korean supermarket was overwhelmed yesterday, but they were super organized and had the pallets of 25 lb. bags of rice next to the exit, so that you didn't have to carry the damn thing around while shopping (guess how I figured that out...)

They also had blue tape on the floor to mark off where everyone needed to stand to maintain proper separation. Most everyone understood it. There's always that guy, though...

All throughout these last two weeks, the produce section has bee fully stocked and there are plenty of veggies and meat available.

I'm sure there are food wholesalers frantically working to shift their supply chains to the retail market. I hope so.

Yes in various flavor like south west flavor etc. they can be put into freezer as well. Sams club used to sell pack of 6 or 8 at one point

Aviation-related item that might be useful, and hasn't sold out yet on Amazon: O2 saturation monitor. The kind that costs $20 and clips on your finger. I fly with one, so that I can tweak my oxygen flow rate just right.

And I'm keeping one at home, because I'm guessing that it will be useful for gauging whether I should go to the emergency room, if I get infected by the coronavirus. That's since the most dangerous effect of the infection is shortness of breath.

My doctor recommended that his patients all get thermometers. Now, go try to find one.

Target's website seems to be accurate for the stores. It said one store had TP and they did! Got 1 big pack. Should last me till June or later.

My sister in law managed to order a pack from Sam's online this weekend. She said she checked the site multiple times a day, and as soon as some came available she ordered one, minutes later they showed out of stock again.

I still haven't seen any on the shelves around here, yet. I know it's out there, but I don't know how to find it.

(We are set, and my folks and my MIL also have a supply.)

I ordered my usual 24-pack of TP that lasts weeks and had it delivered last Friday.

I had to wait a week and when the delivery gal showed up, it was a "substituted" 6-pack of house brand (pretty good stuff!) for $1.87.

They paid for me to get an order of less than two bucks because morons are buying up everything in the store.

Awesome.

I’ve been getting notices from my local stores showing full stocked shelves. But the only question anyone has is, “Do you have toilet paper?”, and the answer is always, “No.”

I went to Target today, still no TP. They had a few paper towels, two per package, with a limit of two packages per customer. We don't need either paper towels or TP but eventually will.

I wonder if some enterprising person would set up an account with a janitorial supply house, go rent a truck, load it up with all that TP that hotels and closed businesses are now not buying, and sell it to the public.

My wife made her bi-weekly run today. She said she found everything she wanted except butter of all things. Even found tp and paper towels at aldi, which surprised me a bit. Apparently a woman in the checkout line made a snide remark about how much she was buying. Feeding a family of seven for two weeks is not a small job.

Walmart limited eggs to one package. 6,12, or 60. Guess we're having omelettes for dinner lol.

Pics or it didn't happen:

glad we still have stock of TP's, but just so you know there are alternatives you can use

Me and the bride went out to do our regular order late this morning, maybe almost noon. We keep a list on the fridge and when the page is full we go shop (usually three weeks). Off we went and managed to pick up just about everything on the list. Before we left the house I took stock of our TP situation, which is typically 2 six packs. So I noticed today we were into the last pack and there were four rolls left. So TP went on the list. After the first market and no TP we made a stop at a wawa, sort of like a 7/11, but much better. We love their milk and that's the only brand we will buy. Of course that type of store doesn't carry TP.

We drove to five, yes five more f'in stores and there was NO TP. WTF! Apparently Ocean City MD and Fenwick Delaware are out of TP.

What is wrong with people? Is it that hard to just fill your typical orders and not go bat **** crazy. I guess tomorrow will be a **** paper mission and most likely buy one six pack. If I see someone hoarding I swear I am going to throw in a pepto-bismal bottle for every package of TP they have. I want to be a good neighbor and help with their obvious diarrhea/mental problems. ;)

It seems that many stores are getting restocked overnight and people are lining up before opening to grab whatever is on the shelves. Even with purchase limits I just don't think they are able to keep up with the demand. You may have a chance if you check with a store manager and ask when stock comes in and *maybe* someone can grab you a pack off a pallet from the back.

I've been checking online for some of the local stores and our Target store claims, from their website, that they have some in stock.

Chimpanzee behavior. Or maybe lemming. It is totally insane, but at this point it's partly the fault of the stores. They need to limit the amount that a customer can buy at one time.

Our local Office Depot says that you can order some and pick it up in store. I would do that but we've still got three packages of six from our last Costco run, and don't need any. I'll probably have to start looking next week.

I keep waiting for these fools to stop hoarding the stuff but they don't seem to want to quit.

No they don't. The entire produce section at our local grocery store was basically cleaned out by this evening. They're not expecting to get any more in for a few days now. I'll say it again: people are behaving like chimpanzees.

People can hoard some pretty strange things. One local store had a "limit 2" sign above empty shelves of ice cream.

I’m stopping early tomorrow at a place next to my local grocery store. I’m planning to poke my head inside and check it out.

I think all these non essential employees spent most of their work hours ****ting on the clock, and now they have to do it at home with their own tp, hence higher demand.

7:30 am. Local grocery store has TP. It’s an off brand, 4-packs, limit 1. They have a reasonable supply, with no other customers right now it might last until maybe noon?

Attempt number two, pun intended.

Went to the grocery store across from our community at 7:20 this morning. They said yesterday that they had a truck coming in so there should be crack/TP on the shelf this morning. It was gone, every last package, and they had just opened at 7am. WTF!

So the hunt resumed again today, with the plan to retrace the five stops from yesterday. Thankfully the Acme on Ocean Highway, maybe seven or right miles from home, had the crack/TP/gold. We hit pay dirt on the second stop! Happily back home with two packages secure. I'm thinking we are good to go, even though we felt shame for buying that second pack. My bride said, pull in the garage, I don't want to do the TP walk of shame for buying more then one pack.

Recap: Two days driving around - 1/4 tank of gas
3/25
Filled grocery order - Completed
Drove around making five stops in two states for TP - Mission fail
3/26
Drove around making two stops for TP - Mission Success

I don't even care about the lack of TP in the stores. I have enough to last a few month under current use and I have a shower next to the toilet with a detachable head. Priorities aren't something most people tend to pay attention to. Hell, the line in front of the drinking water dispenser was insane. Tap water is perfectly fine. You pay for it, drink it.
