Coronavirus hysteria is hurting every one.

Oh, I see. Insensitive or offensive to a regime that has officially threatened to weaponize not only the virus but also curtail availability of pharmaceuticals whose manufacturing we shortsightedly ceded. It will rapidly be clear that China’s governmental misreporting of essential virus data is irresponsible and malign. My post refers to PC circle discussions and Wuhan Virus is as accurate, easy to remember and more descriptive. Sounds like you’re solidly in the first group. Or were you just doing it to ride the high road?

"Wuhan Virus" is at least a little correct, as it was called that in the earliest days before it had a name... But that's about like calling HIV/AIDS "Gay-Related Immune Deficiency". We have a real name for it now, use it.

On the other hand, "Chinese Flu" like Trump just started calling it in the last couple of days is absolutely a term of hate and cultural warfare. It had an official name, in use long before "Chinese Flu" and widely known. If you use the name "Chinese Flu" you're essentially saying "I hate Chinese people." Asian-Americans have increasingly been victims of violence in recent days thanks to this sort of nonsense. Stop it.

On one hand, I think some people get offended too easily. Didn't everyone learn about sticks and stones when they were little? On the other hand, I think people use terms like "Chinese virus" and "Cheetoh-head" to declare to others where they stand culturally. See, I'm in this tribe! I think it only increases the divisiveness that is already out of hand.

It also leads to responses like this:

“The Republican County Commission Chairman in Riley County, Kansas suggested during a Wednesday meeting that the COVID-19 pandemic was less of a concern for the Manhattan, Kansas area because there aren’t as many Chinese people there–unlike Italy, where things are really bad.

Ridiculous and humorless PC policing is just as divisive to this society as any form of intolerance. ”Use it”, “Stop it”? And you are in charge of what? Are these orders, suggestions, invocations? And High Road Man just elevated the conversation to gutter level with his douche canoe comment. Keep Calm/Fly On. Out.

It’s probably going to cancel my planned real estate deal. I have a contract to sell my house and a contract to buy another. Normally I would go ahead and purchase the home I have a contract on as I would not worry about mine selling in a reasonable amount of time. But now unless I can move the date up on closing mine first I’m going to have to back out. I’ll be out some money, but I can’t risk owning two houses with this going on.

"everyone" is one word

Depends on usage. Every one of the people on the team are a member of everyone.

So, if we to allowed to use Cheeto-head now, is Obummer still out? Keynan Kowboy? BoBo the Clown?

Careful, Tim, or you'll get quarantined from POA...again.
there are worse things!

point being, if you don't know you know the difference between everyone and every one, then maybe you don't know the difference between hysteria and reality.

and yeah, I'm in a bad mood. I'm tired of all the lies being told by our federal government and all the people who are dumb enough to believe them and blame the media instead... the good media have been telling the truth for quite some time. I don't know what those people listen to.

Exactly. And then often they end up getting defensive and butt hurt when they're called out on it.

Everyone - it works as a substitute for "everybody"
Coronavirus hysteria is hurting everybody.

Every one - when referring to individual members of a group, "every one of us"
Coronavirus hysteria is hurting every one of us.

And don't get me started on hysteria vs reality, mister.

As far as bad moods go - it was yesterday morning when I woke up and realized just how tired I was, way down deep. There's been a lot of stress on all of us, and it isn't going away soon. My wife and I were talking about it last night. Most of this hasn't affected us directly yet, except when we look at our savings, but we have close personal friends and family members that are looking at job losses, business losses, and even physical deterioration from being locked down in their apartments and losing out on physical therapy and other things like that. Stress on both of us from worrying about how to take care of our parents is adding up, too. Yesterday was actually a good day, the sun was out and it was around 70 deg. A great day for a walk in the fresh air - and it was nice to see kids playing outside. I needed that break from the news.

define politics and religion...

I've seen pro-american slogans and proclamations of Christian beliefs in signature lines of right-wingers. Overtly political and religious and yet they seem to go unchallenged. Not sure if they're still there or not, I don't pay much attention to signature lines these days.

Can't say I believe that the use of "Chinese Flu" rises to the level of hate and cultural warfare. We've often used place names to describe diseases - Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Spanish Flu (which has credible evidence to have originated in Kansas). No doubt some use the term (purposely) with the tone implying derision, but still, there seem to be much more important things to really worry about. Would agree that violence against Asian-Americans due to the flu is stupid and nonsensical.

Tim, all you want to do is argue and make yourself a PITA. Why don't you give it a rest?

Hah. If you want to look intolerant and uninformed, go ahead. That's on you. I'm telling you what you look like to the rest of us if you do that is all - Your opinion will be immediately dismissed, no matter how loud you get.

Gary, I agree in the general sense that there are plenty of place names in diseases. However, those diseases got those nicknames because we didn't know what they were at the time. Hence, my point that "Wuhan Coronavirus" is in that group and not necessarily culturally insensitive. However, we knew what it was and had an actual, scientific name for it long before the president called it the "Chinese Flu". That's what makes it different from all those others you mentioned. One only calls it the "Chinese Flu" if they are deliberately trying to make it a cultural thing. The rest of us are calling it by coronavirus, COVID-19, or SARS-COV2.

He may be a PITA... But he does have a good point.

If you mean his point about the signature lines, we decided a long time ago not to police them unless they are way over the top. Too much work. You can hide signature lines as an option in your settings if they bother you so much.

It appears to me that sig lines have always been granted more latitude. I suspect that blatantly offensive ones might trigger moderation response, but I haven't cared about it enough to test my theory.

There is a fine line between hysteria and reality, particularly when an epidemic is concerned.

Not sure "lies" is the correct word. Mis-information, spin, and political "gotcha's" - certainly. Any more it is harder to tell the difference between the "good" media and the "bad" media. They all have an agenda. Listen to them all and form your own opinion, the truth is probably somewhere in between.

Political Correctness is out of control and has been for a long time, but I find it amazing that when we are in a situation like this with people dying, someone can consider it so important as to how we name the disease. Unbelievable. No matter what you call it, it is what it is.

Sorry, but some guys need to grow a pair.

Mari, you pointed out to me once---when I said that I was pretty much a black and white person---that THAT was our problem. I'm black and white and you live in shades of gray.

So, now I point out the shades of gray when you make a black and white statement and that makes me the PITA? Okay, got it.

You don't refer to it by a fictitious name that no one else is using just to stir up hate and discontent...when people are dying...

...especially when your speechwriter uses "Coronavirus" and you scratch that out with your favorite sharpie and replace it with "Chinese virus" just so you can be as "in your face" as possible.

The moderators on POA need to make black and white decisions when moderating. Something either gets a warning or not. Not only that individual mods don't get to act unilaterally. It's enough of a PITA with some posts. Now you want us to make judgement calls on everyone's signature line. Yeah right. You are being a PITA.

I've heard various people and groups use the term Chinese Flu. As said, some do use it as a slur, other do not. Some take inordinate glee in pointing out - "hey, he used Chinese Flu - bad man". In a perfect world, I'd be happy if we just used COVID-19, but it just isn't that big of an issue, considering all the other MUCH more important things happening now.

Well I'm not happy. Work has just sent me an email that my require me to work 28 days straight. I work on an island and take a daily boat to work. We have anywhere from 75 to 150 folks that ride the day boat and 25 to 75 that take the night shift boat. We then get on busses and take a 40min ride up to the mine.

They will stop the daily commute and require me to stay in a camp for the 28 days working. 58% of the workforce travels from the lower 48.

I'm not sure I'm ready to work 28 straight and stay in camp. At 62 this is not my idea of fun. I'll bet there will be some retribution for those who do not support the company's program.

You have on mine before. I've been asked twice to remove a slogan from my signature line.

This has to be the most interesting thread drift in history. From deadly disease pandemic, to the flavor of bread and water.:D
I wish that's the only place where this thread has drifted.

I don't remember that. You're not so special that I remember every action we have taken on your account. If it was reported and found to be out of bounds by vote, action was taken. We have taken occasional action on people's signature lines and avatars. It's just that we don't make it a priority.

If you think giving it a name based on the country of origin indicates hate, I think you need to consider yourself a bit on the hypersensitive said.

Good grief!

If someone wants to be an instigator, they should expect to be called out on it. My pair is just fine. Feel free kiss them.

I suspect that you might have a little hate yourself, aimed at the president.

Maybe we should come up with a different name for the German Measles. I’m a German descendant. Are my feelings supposed to be hurt?

I will say it a different way. Get a life.

I don’t remember calling your name. I made a general statement, but if you’re going to tell me something like that I respond in kind. For those who don’t have a pair to kiss I guess I don’t have to worry about it.

I’m of German Ancestry. I demand that those referring to German Measles offer a direct apology!:(

I’m sorry that they had no emoji with tears,. That was the best I could find.
