My new to me plane has a 530w. I've never used a garmin gps before and I'm finding myself lost in it other than direct to. I've tried watching videos on youtube for IFR flying with it and they just put me to sleep.

Are there any good training videos out there that aren't so dry and boring or is that par for the course with training videos? I have an IPC set up and the instructor said he will train me but im trying to get ahead of the game with it.

Also download the pilots guide to go with the sim. It’s amazing how much info is in the use manuals!

Consider acquiring a FlightStream 210. The amount of button twisting drops dramatically when coupled to an iPad with Foreflight or Garmin Pilot. One button press on each side to up load a flight plan in either direction. Plus AHRS for flight data to drive iPad EFIS and synthetic vision.

WHAT new plane? I just have missed the thread...

Agree with installing the sim trainer thingy. Then program actual flights in it to get used to it pretty quickly.

Read the bloody manual. It's amazing what you can learn. It's why the manual was written. Don't like reading? Tough. All the details on the 530 are in the manual. All of them.

Big knob = chapters
Little knob = pages
Once you've spent some time with it it's really not that bad.

RTFM. (Read the friendly manual.) As you read, make notes about the knob sequences to accomplish commonly performed tasks. I put together a quick reference sheet for me or my copilot to reference in case you get stuck. There is a common logic to the GNS operations. However, some tasks are just confusing enough that it's helpful to have a "cheat sheet."

Some typical GNS tasks are inserting/deleting a waypoint into a flight plan, activating a leg of a flight plan, direct-to a waypoint in a flight plan, loading and activating procedures, suspending sequencing for hold/missed approach, etc. There are often multiple ways to accomplish a given task. Choose one that makes sense to you.

But really. RTFM, then go fly and take note of what GNS tasks you need to perform often, and write up your "cheat sheet." With practice, the knobology logic will start to make sense.

I had a 530 and read it very thoroughly, but must have missed that depressing and holding the flip flop comm button would lock 121.5 into COMM2 if needed for an emergency.

The manual is actually very good. A couple of YouTube videos, manual, maybe sim time and you're good. Clip an appropriate battery charger and hangar fly.

^^^ What tantalum said.

This is from a very old version of the manual. But it's also in the very beginning "Key and knob functions" section of the newest Pilot guides, albeit prettier.

But really, RTFM is a good and necessary beginning, but only a beginning. There are plenty of tips and tricks beyond the basics which are either not covered in the manual or, while based on information in the manual, would likely not be learned without assistance. Personally, I have learned a lot more about the GNS, GTN, G1000, and IFD from YouTube than from the manual.

Sorry to say, but "so dry and boring" in this case is mostly in the eye of the beholder. Videos trying to be a full course are going to start with some very simple basics (which some people don't know after years). The real key with most of these is to run the simulator also.

Here's two. This is Garmin's own GNS basic course. It's for the non-WAAS model but there really isn't that much difference.
For advanced tips, tricks and gotchas, there's the Fly Like the Pros series. As I tell people who I transition to something Garmin, after the basics, if you can stand listening to them, there is a wealth of information in their videos.

Thanks for the info all, looks like ill dive into the flight manual, between it, the simulator, and some videos Ill get a hang of it.

@eman1200 I got a V35 Bonanza and sold the cherokee to another POA'er. I never did a thread on it. I did just have the GTX 345 installed in it which is a nice addition with the 530w. Im happy and loving the plane. Bought it back in November.bonanza.jpg

Simtech, the only messages we want to see here from you in the near future better contain PHOTOS and at least 3 trips in the next 3 weeks of where you've been;):) That is a great looking plane!
