I need to buy my sister a kindle reader.
It has to be this brand of reader; no others.

I see there are about 4 types out there.
Looking for reviews and suggestions.
She reads mostly in the living room in the evening (ie not in bed, not in the bath)
She always has wifi there. Never travels with it.
 
Get the cheapest unless she wants cellular connectivity.
 
The paperwhite will allow her to sit outside and still be able to read. I started with the paperwhite (and still have the original) and really enjoyed sitting in the sun and reading.
 
We have a few kicking around. Paperwhite is the best all around for ghetto buck and often goes on sale for $99.

We don’t currently have an oasis.

The older models we have are similar to the regular kindle now but it just got a front light built in ours doesn’t have. If the person is always reading in well lit places it really is fine.

Size and shape may also be important. I always liked the smaller models because I tend to use them one handed quite a bit. The big oasis and even bigger old discontinued models wouldn’t allow that as well as the current normal sized ones.
 
Haha I didn’t type “ghetto buck” but I like what autocorrect came up with better for once. LOL.
 
Questionable options I see are
-Wifi/cell data or no. If none, I suppose you connect it to computer by cable to dl books
-8GB or 32GB larger for travelers, I suppose
 
Just got a new one for Christmas, to replace my older one without backlight. 100% recommend the backlit screen, no matter what your plans are. And as far as I know they all have WiFi. Pass on the Fire, it’s really nothing but an Android tablet with Kindle apps.

The new Kindle has a backlit screen... though they call it a “front light” for some reason. It’s cheaper than the Paperwhite, but still leaps ahead of the older one I was using. I gave that one to my son, with instructions to donate it to someone who needs it when he’s done or buys a newer one.
 
The nice thing about Kindles is that they are more readable in direct sunlight where glare is an issue. But how many people do that? If it's a nice sunny day, I'm not sitting around reading.

I'm going to assume she already has an Ipad, but if she didn't, I'd get her an Ipad instead and I would second the Kindle app for IOS. That way you don't have to lug an extra device, plus it has a lot more uses. The one thing though, and it's not a big deal, the Kindle IOS app has a bug in it. It will insert a half inch indent in an otherwise flush formatted lead chapter paragraph.
 
I use my Kindle outdoors from time to time. I’ll read while relaxing in the back yard, and I’ve used it while just sunning myself on a cruise. There’s really no comparing the Kindle screen with a tablet for reading. The lack of glare from the flat white screen, and the lack of worrying about battery life are big factors for me.

A lot of the place I use my Kindle have big windows...such as airport terminals.

The glare-free screen is a major factor, for me, even if I'm not outside. A normal tablet may restrict your reading position, due to nearby lamps, overhead lighting, and, again, windows.

I've traveled using a normal tablet instead of my Kindle, and hate the power-hungriness of the tablet.

I've got a Kindle reader that I've had for a number of years. Haven't looked at it in years as I have the app on whatever tablet I'm currently using. One less thing to carry on a plane.

This is exactly what I love about my kindle, which is so old it has the actual keyboard buttons on the bottom. No glare, can read it outside, and the battery lasts forever. I play a couple games on it, it fits in my pocket at the airport gate.
